Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

IDT Internet Mobile Group (IMG) has formed Zedge Studios to develop and license digital content for distribution through web and mobile platforms.  Additionally, IMG has acquired a controlling interest in indie comics publisher IDW Publishing (Transformers, Star Trek, CSI etc).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Walden Media has optioned Relativity, a family-centric script from Peter Craig, per Variety.  The story revolves around the Ferguson family as they gather to celebrate the mom and dad’s 35th anniversary; it is then that the kids learn a secret that rocks all of their lives.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network unveils its first massively multi-player online game (MMOG), Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall, today at Comic-Con in San Diego.  Slated to launch in summer 2008, Comic-Com attendees can play demos of the game.  The FusionFall website ( www.fusionfall.com ) also debuts today, where gamers will find news, images and game-play footage and can sign-up for a chance to participate in beta testing for the game.  Korea’s Grigon Entertainment developed FusionFall in partnership with Cartoon Network.

Manga and anime distributor TokyoPop premiered four new anime series exclusively via a branded MySpace page ( www.myspace.com/tokyopoptv), based on manga series I Luv Halloween, A Midnight Opera, Bizenghast and Riding Shotgun. The series features CG animation from digital effects house Menfond Electronic Art (The Nightmare Before Christmas).  As always not all manga and anime titles are for all ages.

Eidos interactive has entered into a 3-year in-game advertising deal with Double Fusion.  The deal covers 10 Eidos titles.  Advertising will be featured across formats, including “dynamically-served advertisements,” which can be rotated or changed after the games’ release, and “deep integrations and product placements.”

Harry Potter fans might want to check out XMKids this afternoon at 3p when actor Jim Dale, the voice of the HP audio books, will be on.

AZN Television‘s annual Ghost August Fest will feature the series MoonPhase and the movie Kakurenbo: Hide and Seek, the latter airing with English and Japanese dubbing (with English subtitles), per Anime News Network. The television series will premiere on August 27, airing Mondays-Wednesdays at 8:30p. Kakurenbo with English dubbing will first be broadcast on August 16 at 7p with the Japanese-dubbed version following at 8p.

Shaftesbury Films has completed several new international broadcast deals for the live action TV series Life with Derek.  The kid-targeted comedy has been picked up for by Disney Channel (Portugal), Zapp/Zappelin (Netherlands) and NRK 3 (Norway).  The airs around the world in 100+ countries, and has been translated into 12 languages.

Anime Network has inked carriage deals with Kansas MSOs, Sunflower Broadband and Eagle Communications, which will bring the 24/7 linear channel to the state.  The network will be available in three new markets Lawrence, Hays and Minneapolis, Kansas.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Ubisoft has acquired the video game development and publishing rights to 20th Century Fox’s Avatar, the upcoming movie written and directed by James Cameron.  Scheduled for released in conjunction with the movie in May 2009, the game will feature CGI, 3D imagery and other effects created by WETA Digital, the New Zealand based visual effects production house founded by director Peter Jackson and others.  While not yet rated, Cameron’s Avatar (not to be confused with Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender) will likely be for teens and up.

Nickelodeon Universe is the name of Nickelodeon’s new family-targeted theme park at Mall of America.  The park is slated to open in March 2008.

A new Bob The Builder promotion launches today at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide, as part of a deal between HIT Entertainment and Chick-fil-A, Inc.  The promotion, which runs through November 15, will feature on of five different Bob the Builder board books free with each Kids’ Meal.

STONE SOUP

A new study from MTV, Nickelodeon and Microsoft surveyed 18,000 kids from 16 countries about how they use digital technology, including cell phones, instant messaging, PCs, TVs, digital cameras, social networks and gaming. The report discovered that tech savvy youth develop more and closer friendships, influence each other’s actions as much as marketers do and use digital communications in conjunction with instead of to replace television. Globally, the number of friends that young males have more than doubles between the ages of 13-14 and 14-17, jumping from 24 to 69. Boys aged 18-21 said they have on average 70 friends, the largest concentration among genders and age groups. Practices varied greatly among nations. Japanese kids rely on cell phones to communicate and have few online friends. China has the lowest usage of cell phones among young people, but social networks, blogs and instant messaging are popular.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

James Anderson has been upped to SVP/Public Relations, Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media.  Anderson reports to Shirley Powell, SVP/Corporate Communications, TBS, Inc. Anderson will oversee PR and publicity efforts for Turner’s young adult and kid related media platforms including: Cartoon Network; Boomerang; Adult Swim; Cartoon Network and Adult Swim websites; Toonami Jetstream; Cartoon Network Video; GameTap; and Super Deluxe.  Additionally, he will be responsible for the animation production facilities, Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank and Williams Street Studios in Atlanta.  Most recently Anderson was Cartoon Network’s VP/Public Relations.

Grand Toys International Ltd. has named David C.W. Howell as its new CFO.  Based in Hong Kong, Howell will officially take the reins in August, as the current CFO, David Fremed, exits the company.  Howell will also serve on the company’s board.  Previously he served in a number of positions at Radica Games including as EVP/CFO, and President Asian Operations among others.
