Cynopsis: Sports
07.24.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Sports Group added a big piece to the puzzle via a 10-year deal with NASCAR that gives the company rights to the final 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, the final 19 NASCAR Nationwide Series events, select NASCAR Regional & Touring Series events as well as other live content beginning with the 2015 season. Under the deal, which will make NBC the sole broadcaster for the Chase, seven races will be carried on NBC annually, with the other 13 airing running on NBC Sports Network. For the Nationwide Series, four races will hit NBC with the other 15 on NBCSN.

NBC also obtained exclusive rights to practice and qualifying sessions for NBC’s national series events during their portion of the season, as well as rights to broadcast the NASCAR K&N Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Toyota (Mexico) Series, the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony and NASCAR’s season-ending banquets. Plus, NBC received Spanish-language rights, certain video-on-demand rights and exclusive TV Everywhere rights for its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events.

In a conference call with reporters, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said that NBC’s commitment, cross-promotional opportunities and integration plays were all dominant factors in the deal.

On the Air

Combined with the FOX deal, most NASCAR races for 2015 and beyond are accounted for with the exception of three Sprint Cup races and half of the Nationwide Series, which NASCAR said it expects to announce soon. (Although France did mention Nationwide races hitting FS1.)

The move, of course, ends NASCAR’s long relationships for ESPN and Turner Sports, and all three parties acknowledged their long history together. “ESPN has enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship with NASCAR,” said John Skipper, President of ESPN, in a statement. “We have tremendous respect for the France family, the drivers and all in the sport and wish them well.  We will continue to serve NASCAR fans through SportsCenter and our other news platforms as we continue to enhance our industry-leading collection of quality assets.”

Speaking of which, ESPN begins its coverage of the final 17 races of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule on Sunday at 1p with a flag-to-flag telecast of the Brickyard 400 The telecast from Indianapolis is presented by Golden Corral and will 72 high definition cameras, including four Ultra Hi Motion cameras for replays and unique action shots. One will be mounted on pit wall near the “Yard of Bricks” that make up the start/finish line at the Speedway while another robotic Ultra Hi Motion camera will be mounted to provide a low shot in the first turn. Two others will be in the second and fourth turns. Eight cars will carry onboard cameras and ESPN also will have a helicopter camera for overhead shots in the Brickyard 400 and for all 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup race telecasts.

On the college football front, the Big Ten Conference extended its relationship with the Heart of Dallas Bowl presented by PlainsCapital Bank and will now take part in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on a rotating basis as well, during a seven-year period following the 2013-2019 seasons.

Meanwhile, ESPN Regional Television and the Las Vegas Bowl have announced a six-year extension with the Pac-12 Conference that will keep the league in the game through at least 2019. Negotiations with a second partner conference for 2014 are ongoing.

FOX UFC Saturday returns this weekend to the Key Arena in Seattle with a title bout featuring UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (17-2-1) against top contender John Moraga (13-1-0) in primetime on Saturday at 8p on FOX. UFC announcers Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan call all three bouts on FOX Sports as well as the preliminary matches on FX beginning at 5p. Host Jon Anik, Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann provide analysis for preliminary bouts on FX, with host Curt Menefee.

ESPN made its game selections for the August 11 and 18 editions of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell. On August 11, the Tampa Bay Rays and Evan Longoria take on the Dodgers and Hanley while the August 18 featured game pits the Yankees and Red Sox. The 8p telecasts run on ESPN with Dan Shulman, analysts Orel Hershiser, John Kruk and reporter Buster Olney providing commentary.

NBC Sports Network’s daily sports and entertainment show The Crossover is back tonight at 6p with host Michelle Beadle. Guests are slated to include WWE’s professional wrestling twin tag team and stars of E!’s Total Divas Nikki and Brie Bella, and WNBC-New York sports anchor Scott Stanford. Thursday’s guests include comedian Josh Wolf, MLB Network radio host Casey Stern and New York Giants RB Andre Brown. On Friday, Beadle brings in MSG reporter Tina Cervasio, The Dan Patrick Show’s Paul Pabst and the Gator Boys.

Telemundo reports that its coverage of its Boxeo Telemundo summer series scored as the top boxing series among major Spanish-language networks averaging 342,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen. The show’s highest rated telecast during the summer series came on June 28 when it drew nearly half a million total viewers (476,000 P2+) and 243,000 among adults 18-49.

Note: Yesterday’s edition should have read that ESPN’s high school football coverage will begin on Aug. 23 on ESPN3.

FOX Sports may be thinking that one isn’t enough. The network filed a UDRP to get control of 22 domain names, including FoxSports1.com and FoxSports1.tv, according to thedomains.com. In addition, the company threw in a few more names just in case with domains for Fox Sports 2, Fox Sports 3 and Fox Sports 3D also in the mix.

The Main Event
