Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Monday night’s 2013Chevrolet Home Run Derby on ESPN packed a punch for the network, handing the channel a 5.0 overnight score, according to Nielsen, up 6% over the 2012 event. That marks the highest-rated Home Run Derby since 2009. On the local front, Detroit led the pack with a 9.8 rating, while Baltimore saw enormous growth with a spike of 133% over last year to a 9.0, while host city New York saw a 7.9, up 19%. Meanwhile, the network reports the 2013 Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game, which aired immediately following the Home Run Derby, generated a 1.9 overnight rating, up 12% from a 1.7 in 2012.
On the Air
TiVo checks in with its Top 5 moments from the Home Run Derby on ESPN, based on its data.
1. 10:15pm – Bryce Harper finishes his 2nd round with 16 total Home Runs, including one monster shot off the foul pole in right field.
2. 10:22pm – Yoenis Cespedes rips the ball over the right center field fence slamming the windshield of the truck. On the very next pitch, he tears a line drive off the restaurant windows in deep left field. This Home Run sets up the final round with Bryce Harper.
3. 10:37pm – Bryce Harper had his father, Ron Harper, pitch to him during the Home Run Derby. With 6 Home Runs and 6 outs in the final round, Ron’s errant throw nearly beans his son.
4. 10:39pm – Bryce Harper smashes the ball to deep right center where it lands 447 feet from home plate (without interference it would have traveled approximately 471 feet).
5. 10:54pm The Oakland A’s Yoenis Cespedes hits his ninth and final homer to clinch the Home Run Derby, as he flips his bat he is mobbed at home plate by his American League teammates, thus concluding the 2013 MLB Home Run Derby.
Meanwhile, the SEC opened its media days with a bevy of TV news, anchored by the broadcast schedule for the first three weeks of the football season. Overall, coverage plans for 37 games have been announced so far for SEC teams via ESPN, CBS, ESPN Networks, FSN, SEC Network, and PPV. The season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29 with a twin bill on ESPN of North Carolina/ South Carolina at 6p and Ole Miss/Vanderbilt at 9:15p. BCS Champ Alabama will see its first two games take the national stage, starting Aug.31 against Virginia Tech. The 2013 SEC Championship Game will be televised by CBS at 4p on Saturday, December, 7.
Meanwhile, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive revealed that in addition to the SEC Network’s plan to carry three football games every Saturday in the 2014 season, the channel will also launch a weekly, two-hour, live pre-game show that will air from a different SEC campus each week that will run before the games, according to reports.
Continuing the SEC theme, ESPN Films’ SEC Storied series will start its third season this fall with The Book of Manning on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 8p on ESPN. The film will explore the “personal and professional life of former NFL and Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning and how the sudden loss of his father impacted his life and the way he and his wife Olivia raised their three sons.”
ESPN made its game selection for the August 4 edition of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell: with the Atlanta Braves/Philadelphia Phillies matchup at 8p. Dan Shulman, analysts Orel Hershiser and John Kruk and reporter Buster Olney handle microphone duties. Meanwhile, the next edition will feature Yankees/Red Sox on July 21.
NASCAR drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano are hitting the small screen in the next week with Keselowski appearing on TBS comedy series Sullivan & Son this Thursday at 10p while Logano plays a role in Disney XD comedy Lab Rats on Monday, July 22, 9p.
Longtime Redskins staple Chris Cooley is retiring from the league and will become an analyst for Redskins radio broadcasts this season, according to The Washington Post.
FOX Sports South reports that ratings for the Atlanta Braves through the first half of baseball season are showing healthy growth. Nielsen numbers for FOX Sports South and SportSouth are up 17.9% over comparable numbers through the All-Star Break a year ago with a 4.15 through 87 games.
