Cynopsis apologizes for an insensitive headline about the Trayvon Martin verdict in yesterday’s newsletter. The headline has been removed from the issue.

Apple wants a bigger piece of the TV pie. Word has it the company is planning a service that would allow viewers to skip advertising, reports Variety and pay TV networks to make up for lost ad revenue. While moving into television is clearly a priority for Apple CEO Tim Cook, it’s anyone’s guess what form that will take… which has a lot of people guessing.

~ MORE STUFF ~

Tell it to the judge. Fox Broadcasting isn’t taking no for an answer after the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals denied TV broadcasters’ request to review the April decision that allowed Aereo to stay in business a business that involves streaming their content over the Internet. “We will now review our options, and determine the appropriate course of action,” said a statement from Fox. Supreme Court, here we come?

Glee star Corey Monteith died of “mixed drug toxicity” involving heroin and alcohol, reported the British Columbia coroner’s office on Tuesday. The actor, who had talked openly about the struggles he’d had with drug addiction since he was a teen, had entered a treatment facility in April. He passed away in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13. He was 31.

It’s hammer time! Renovation nightmares are the specialty of contractor Mike Holmes, star of DIY‘s Holmes Makes it Right. In the series, the no-nonsense Canadian uncovers dangerous construction practices and rescues people from renovation rip-offs. The show makes its U.S. premiere on Tuesday, August 6 at 8p.

Full House throwback: John Stamos and his band from the 1987-1995 ABC hit, Jesse and the Rippers, are slated to play on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Friday, July 19. Think the Olsen twins will tune in?

AMC is thinking big with its upcoming drama, Low Winter Sun: the net is offering a sneak peek at the series in more than twenty theaters across the country. The first ep of the show will hit the big screen on Monday, July 29, followed by a simulcast Q&A with executive producer Chris Mundy and members of the cast. The series makes its small screen debut Sunday, August 11 at 10p.

Will Teen Wolf take a bite out of Pretty Little Liars? Is Baby Daddy‘s Chelsea Kane cooler than Twisted‘s Maddie Hasson? Fox has announced the final nominees for Teen Choice 2013, airing Sunday, August 11; deadline for voting August 12 (but you have to be between 13-19 years old).

ABC Family is cozying up to Bedsider.org, a free online birth control support organization, to promote contraception among sexually active young adults. Three webisodes will air on the net’s Baby Daddy web site, after an ep on Wednesday, July 31 in which Danny’s girlfriend takes a pregnancy test.

Heroes gets another run…sort of. The cult series NBC canceled three years ago is returning in the form of a comic book from Dynamite Entertainment. But fans, beware: “There is a big curveball right from issue #1 of the comic,” warns writer Cullen Bunn, “that will set a lot of what we’ve seen on the series on its ear.”

Deep fried…beer? Destination America is showcasing the calorie-packed cooking craze with Deep Fried Masters, featuring frying competitions at local state fairs. “We all have fond memories of the state fair,” said Marc Etkind, general manager of Destination America. “Now you can watch the geniuses who brought you deep-fried goodness.”  There’s a competition too, of course. Tune in to see who cooks up the best “fried food on a stick.”

The Glee Project won’t make it to season three, but Oxygen says it has nothing to do with the tragic death of Glee star Corey Monteith on July 13. The decision to end the series, in which Glee stars mentor contestants vying for an arc on the series, came because Glee’s late renewal didn’t leave enough turnaround time to produce the show, says The Wrap.

Goooooool! Join us on Aug. 14 when we present Telemundo staple Andres Cantor with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. Cantor, of course, is an internationally known star behind the microphone, calling countless soccer matches all over the world and his goal calls have become iconic for both Telemundo and sports culture in the United States. Telemundo Executive Vice President of Sports Jorge Hidalgo will present the honor. Tickets are on sale now. at http://www.cynopsissportssummit.com.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

They’re back, and they’re growing up fast. The girls from season four of 16 and Pregnant are returning as MTV’s newest Teen Moms. Alex, Briana, Katie and Mackenzie deal with broke relationships, money woes and the difficulty of juggling raising a newborn with cheerleading practice.

Ray Donovan doesn’t just fix the problems of LA’s elite. As the main character in the new Showtime series named for him, he’s doing wonders for the net’s ratings, too. After Sunday night’s ep delivered 2.2 million viewers, Showtime renewed the drama for a second season. “Ray Donovon is on track to be our biggest season 1 show ever,” crowed David Nevins, Showtime’s president of entertainment. “We are proud and excited to pick up another season.”

Are we there yet? American Dad is moving to TBS for season eleven in 2014. The adult animated sitcom from Seth MacFarlane (did we mention it’s an adult series?) will join TBS’s prime time lineup; the net already airs syndicated reruns.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

Will the upcoming slate of new talkers be able to keep up with Kris Jenner? The first of a six-week test run of the momager”s new chatfest, Kris won the 3p hour in LA with a 1.3 rating (leaving Katie, Steve Harvey and Dr. Phil in the dust), and performed solidly for other Fox stations on the map. But in New York, another Fox affiliate test run bested Kris’s numbers: The Real, a panel talk show including Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai, Tamar Braxton, Loni Love and Adrienne Bailon improved its Kris lead-in with a 1.3 household rating. Let the games begin!

LIVE with Kelly and Michael goes Broadway the week of July 22-26, as hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan offer an inside look at five hit musicals and even perform! Can’t wait to see Michael in Kinky Boots

Batter up! Buddy Valastro and TLC’s Cake Boss clan face off against the Mama June Shannon and the crew from the net’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo for an episode of Family Feud that tapes Monday, July 22 in Atlanta, Georgia. The new season of Feud premieres Monday, September 16.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Welcome back! Jim Beaver will return as Supernatural’s Bobby Singer when the CW series comes back for season nine. We’ll have to wait until the show returns in October to find out how they’re bringing him back from the dead…

James Franco may be made for movies, but he’s no stranger to TV (don’t forget those General Hospital appearances). Now he’s set to guest star in Fox‘s The Mindy Project, starting Tuesday, September 17 at 9:30p. He plays Dr. Paul Leotard, a former model. Which sounds pretty Franco-esque to us.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Bravo‘s Top Chef gets cooking with a Spanish-language version for Telemundo, called Top Chef: Estrellas. Eight Hispanic celebs will compete to win money for charity; James Beard, Jamie Martin Del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu will decide who’s king (or queen) of the kitchen.

~ RATINGS ~

Who needs Bruce Willis? The Die Hard star was just joshing with David Letterman Monday night about guesting on Under the Dome (as “the guy who lives right next door to the dome”), but the CBS show is doing just dandy without the help of the action star. According to preliminary Nielsen national estimates, the show grabbed 10.8 million viewers, rising 6% in adults 25-54.

Melissa Gorga got on her knees on Sunday night’s Real Housewives of New Jersey ep to beg sister-in-law Teresa Giudice to stop the fighting, but we’re betting Bravo is just egging them on. The show won 2.7 million total viewers and 1.5 million A18-49, jumps of 24 and 20 percent – ya think Bravo wants anyone making peace?
