British native Piers Morgan, known to US viewers as one of the hosts of NBC’s America’s Got Talent, is expected to become Larry King’s replacement for the CNN interview show, reports NYT. Apparently Morgan, who is still under contract with NBC, may be allowed to negotiate directly with CNN on a contract that could become final within a few days. In the UK, Morgan is an experienced interviewer and also hosts Piers Morgan Life Stories on CNN. FOX revealed its premiere dates for new and returning series this fall: Yesterday, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the FCC’s indecency enforcement policy citing it as “unconstitutionally vague and chilling.” The Supreme Court had overturned the Second Court’s initial finding that the FCC’s policy was an “arbitrary and capricious” change in policy and sent the case back again. In its latest decision, a three-judge panel from the Second Court found the FCC’s decision, involving swearing on awards shows on FOX, as “impermissibly vague.” The Second Court said more specifically, “Under the current policy, broadcasters must choose between not airing or censoring controversial programs and risking massive fines or possibly even loss of their licenses,” said the court, “and it is not surprising which option they choose. Indeed, there is ample evidence in the record that the FCC’s indecency policy has chilled protected speech.” The Second Court further stated, “We now hold that the FCC’s policy violates the First Amendment because it is unconstitutionally vague, creating a chilling effect that goes far beyond the fleeting expletives at issue here. Thus, we grant the petition for review and vacate the FCC’s order and the indecency policy underlying it.” 2010 FIFA World Cup Ratings Results: Nielsen reported an estimated 111.6 million US viewers tuned into at least six minutes of World Cup action this year on English or Spanish-language networks. This represents a +22% bump compared to the 2006 World Cup reach with 91.4 million US viewers. TNT’s premiere of new original series Rizzoli & Isles on Monday at 10p now holds cable’s #1 commercial-supported series launch ever amassing 7.6 million total viewers. VH1 reported the 90-minute debut of Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch on Sunday at 9p posted a 0.9 rating with A18-49 and drew in 1.5 million total viewers. Directly after at 1030p, VH1 premiered a sophomore season of The T.O. Show which averaged a 1.0 rating with A18-49 and 1.6 million total viewers. Yesterday, George Steinbrenner, iconic owner of the New York Yankees died following a massive heart attack in Tampa. He had just turned 80 years old on July 4th. Steinbrenner owned the Yankees since 1973, buying the team from CBS. In recent years, the control of the ball club was passed to his sons and general manager, though he will be remembered as bringing the Yankees back to major prominence and making the team into one of the most prestigious sports brands in the world. He launched the YES Network in 2002 which airs the majority of Yankee games in New York along with other original programs. President/CEO of YES Network, Tracy Dolgin released this statement: “We at YES are saddened by the passing of George M. Steinbrenner. He was a New York icon and a sports icon, a true visionary who will be greatly missed. His vision of a team-owned regional sports network for the Yankees, resulting in the formation of the YES Network, revolutionized the sports business. Mr. Steinbrenner’s influence on the world of sports is tremendous, and will be felt long after he’s gone. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Steinbrenner family and the Yankees organization.”
