This fall, PBS debuts a new four-part series, America In Primetime created to highlight television and how it serves as a lens on American culture. America In Primetime premieres October 30 and will air on Sundays through November 20 at 8p (check local listings). The series will cover some of the most interesting TV shows of today and the past and spotlight different key character archetypes such as the man of the house, the independent woman, the misfit and the crusader. The series is a production of WETA Washington, DC, and The Documentary Group, in association with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation.
Beginning next week, HGTV will preview five new series during the run of its reality competition series HGTV Design Star. The five series previews include: Selling LA on July 18 at 10; The High Low Project on August 1 at 10p; Donna Decorates Dallas on August 8 at 10p; Dina’s Party on August 15 at 10p; and Design on a Dime August 29 at 1130p.
A&E Network will air a special 90-minute second season opener of series Beyond Scared Straight on August 18 at 10p. The one-hour series follows four at-risk teens. Arnold Shapiro Productions produces the series for A&E Network.
Six additional episodes of original series Braxton Family Values was ordered by WE tv taking the episode count to 19 one-hour shows. Because of feedback received from viewers of the show, WE tv is also moving up the premiere date to November 8 at 9p instead of a 2012 launch. Production is presently happening on the new season.
Season four of Bravo’s The Rachel Zoe Project has moved to September 6 at 10p. The series is produced for Bravo by Original Media.
Actor/comedian Jay Mohr will host the new fast-paced debate style show, Master Debaters With Jay Mohr opening on FUEL TV on September 7 at 1030p. The show, aiming at young males, sports an opinionated celebrity panel discussing several topics related to sports, entertainment and girls. DLP Entertainment is behind the series for FUEL TV.
Last Friday’s bridal-themed show premieres on TLC delivered 1.7 million total viewers for double episodes of Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids from 10-11p. Just before from 9-10p, TLC aired Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta which brought in 1.4 million total viewers for its debut.
From HBO, the eighth season debut of Curb Your Enthusiasm on Sunday was the most-watched episode of the series in more than seven years posting 1.7 million total viewers at 10p.
Syfy’s back-to-back scripted series premieres on Monday attracted 2.5 million total viewers and 1.2 million with A18-49 for new series Alphas at 10p. At 9p, a third season opener of Warehouse 13 drew 2.3 million total viewers and 1.0 million among A18-49. Also this night, a 4.5 season return of Eureka kicked off its new run with 2.3 million total viewers and 1.0 million with A18-49.
Monday’s seventh season debut of The Closer at 9p on TNT tallied 7.2 million total viewers, making it basic cable’s largest drama audience of the year so far. The Closer also delivered 1.8 million with A18-49 for the premiere episode. Immediately following at 10p, TNT’s second season premiere of Rizzoli & Isles attracted 6.4 million total viewers and 1.5 million total viewers among A18-49.
Sherwood Schwartz, creator of two iconic classic TV series The Brady Bunch and Gilligan’s Island, died of natural causes at the age of 94. In addition to creating these two shows, Mr. Schwartz wrote more than 150 episodes of The Red Skelton Show and created a short-lived series titled It’s About Time. Following the run of The Brady Bunch as a series, he stayed involved in the franchise making TV movies, the brief series The Brady Brides as well as the Brady Bunch movies in the late 1990s.
Health, wellness and lifestyle show, Dr. Steve launches in national syndication this fall, from Tribune Broadcasting. The half-hour show, hosted by Dr. Steven Salvatore, a board certified Emergency Medicine physician will cover multiple topics. The program premieres September 17 in 17 markets across the US. Dr. Steve presently airs on PIX11/New York, KDAF/Dallas, KIAH/Houston and WSFL/Miami; and will be added on KTLA/Los Angeles; WGN and CLTV/Chicago; PHL17/Philadelphia; DC50/Washington DC; KCPQ and JoeTV/Seattle; KTXL/Sacramento; KRCW/Portland; WTTV and WXIN/Indianapolis; KSWB/San Diego; WCCT/Hartford; WPMT/Harrisburg; WXMI/Grand Rapids; and ABC26/New Orleans.
Tricon Films & Television picked up the international distribution rights for the series Metal Evolution offering an in-depth look at Heavy metal music from Banger Films. The one-hour series has 11 episodes.
Bounce TV set its launch date and time for September 26 at 12 noon EST. The network is the first over-the-air broadcast network for African-American viewers. Bounce TV also said Belo Corp.’s KHOU/Houston will carry the network.
Juliette Lewis and Callum Keith Rennie are both set to star in the upcoming legal drama series The Firm based on John Grisham’s novel, for NBC. Lewis and Rennie will star opposite already cast Josh Lucas who will play attorney Mitchell McDeere. Lewis will play Mitch’s sassy and attractive receptionist while Rennie will play Ray McDeere, Mitch’s charming yet volatile older brother. David Straiton has also been confirmed to direct the pilot episode which begins production in Toronto next month. The Firm is produced by Entertainment One (eOne) in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks and Paramount Pictures.
Los Angeles-based Pop Monkey Productions opened an office UK that will be located initially at Advision TV Studios in Kent. The new office will fund unscripted and multi-platform pilot annually and Pop Monkey will also use this UK base to oversee its expanding roster of development in the UK and Europe. Co-Founders, Chuck Thomas and Simone Thorogood will manage the UK office and the company will continue to be headquartered in LA headed by Syd Vinnedge and Hugh Wright.
Brian Smith (The Big Bang Theory) moves to The CW’s Gossip Girl playing an up-and-coming chef named Max. The number of episodes featuring Smith has not been determined.
Lauren German landed a role on CBS’ Hawaii Five-O for season two where she will play an ex-Homeland Security office tapped by the new governor to join the Five-O team to keep an eye on them.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: Week to week, FOX remained at the same ratings level Saturday night at 0.9/4 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX won with two repeat Cops episodes averaging a 1.0/5 while ABC’s 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show encore and Univision’s weekly Sabado Gigante tied for #2 at 0.7/3 each. During 9p, a three-way tie occurred between CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat, the average of FOX’s Family Guy and The Cleveland Show reruns and Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3 apiece followed by another three-way tie for second place between ABC’s Expedition Impossible encore, NBC’s Law & Order: CI encore and Telemundo’s Cine de Impacto II at 0.5/2 each. Then at 10p, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery rebroadcast was a stand-alone winner at 1.1/4 with Univision’s Sabado Gigante next at 1.0/3.
