IOC President Jacques Rogge backed off reports that he questioned the value of Olympic sponsors Coca-Cola and McDonald’s on Tuesday, after being quoted that there had been a “question mark” about their sponsorship due to obesity concerns. In a statement to Reuters, Rogge noted that “The IOC hugely values the long-term sponsorship and support of both McDonald’s and Coca-Cola. Through the years we have personally witnessed the positive impact that they make as TOP sponsors,” said the IOC president.

Tuesday night’s MLB Home Run Derby handed ESPN with year-to-year growth for the event, rising 3% in coverage ratings numbers over 2011 and drawing around 6.9 million people. Online, the second annual Social Media Derby which allows players to use social media from the field, saw 804,337 total Twitter and public Facebook comments which scored a 158% increase over last year’s Derby, according to MLB.
A much-hyped battle between Silva and Sonnen at UFC 148 paid dividends for FX, with preliminary ratings showing that the channel scored a record number of viewers for the preliminary bouts to the PPV card. FX drew 1.8 million viewers for the two-hour telecast for a network best.
The NBA confirmed that the league will hold the first-ever NBA Canada Series this October with teams playing preseason games in Montreal and Winnipeg. The Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks will square off at the Bell Centre on Oct. 19, while the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons will play at the MTS Centre on Oct. 24. The series marks the first time games are being held in the country as part of the league’s marquee international preseason schedule.
Believe it or not, it has been 60 years since Lou Abbott & Bud Costello first televised the famous “Who’s on First?” routine, and MLB Network will commemorate the occasion with an interview between Jerry Seinfeld and MLB Network’s Bob Costas during MLB’s 2012 All-Star break on Thursday at 7p where the comedian will discuss how the routine influenced him as a comedian, writer and baseball fan and how “The Abbott & Costello Show” impacted the creation of and characters in Seinfeld.
SportsCenter is bringing back the “My Wish” series for the seventh year, featuring sports-themed wishes being granted through Make-A-Wish.The series starts Sunday on the 10a show with each wish serving as the subject of a SportsCenter feature segment. Chris Connelly returns as host and will be joined by NBA MVP LeBron James, New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, NASCAR’s Kyle Busch, 2011 U.S. Open winner Rory McIlroy, and Washington Capitals’ two-time Hart Trophy (MVP) winner Alexander Ovechkin this time around.
The new Pac-12 Enterprises studio and office space was officially opened yesterday with a visit from San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee to tour the 80,000 square-foot office and studio space.The space will be home to the Pac-12 Networks, a national network and six regional feeds for the upcoming networks.

The U.S. Army will not renew its sponsorship of Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 39 Chevrolet driven by Ryan Newman due to a reallocation of its marketing budget and will pull out of NASCAR altogether. SHR announced that they are “actively pursuing a strong brand” to partner with the team and its other roster of sponsors. “The U.S. Army has worked with Stewart-Haas Racing in a mutually beneficial and highly successful relationship for the past four seasons, and they’ve performed superbly as our partner on and off the track,” said John Myers, Director, Marketing Support Element, Army Marketing and Research Group. “The same can be said of other members of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series family we have sponsored during the past 10 seasons. The sport, our drivers and the passionate NASCAR fans embraced the Army’s participation and created a tremendous opportunity for Americans to learn more about the profession of the Army Strong Soldier.”
Marvel Entertainment announced a licensing agreement with Russell Athletic for a Marvel Super Hero-Russell Athletic Collegiate apparel program that will hit as many as 200 colleges across the country. The new products will be available starting this summer include t-shirts and hoodies featuring Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Wolverine. The characters will appear in each college’s respective school colors along with their mascots and logos. Among the universities participating are UCLA, Michigan State, Baylor, Kansas State, Mississippi State, UNLV, Ohio State and University of Iowa.
Celebrities helped raise $1 million in net proceeds for The V Foundation for Cancer Research for Team ESPN’s 12th annual ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic. Names taking part included: Carlos Bocanegra, Tim Brown, Dwight Clark, Billy Crudup, Eric Dickerson, Trent Dilfer, Tony Dovolani, Lee Elder, Julius Erving, Mike Golic, Mike Greenberg, Chris Harrison, Bruce Jenner, Greg Jennings, Lou Holtz, and Joe Mantegna.
