Jenny McCarthy could be headed to the couch at ABC‘s The View. It’s been reported that the comedian is in serious talks to join the show as a panelist, when it returns for its 17th season this fall. McCarthy is no stranger to the show, having been a regular guest co-host. Plus, she has experience on the talk show front, having hosted The Jenny McCarthy Show on VH1. McCarthy would fill the spot left vacant by Joy Behar, who is leaving the show when her contract expires in August. The news comes on the heels of Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s reported exit for Fox News.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Cooking chops and sabotage skills are on the menu in the new Food Network competition series Cutthroat Kitchen. Hosted by Alton Brown, the game features a briefcase filled with $100,000 in cash, four competitors, three rounds of cooking and auctions where chefs bid on items to help themselves or hinder their opponents. The 13-episode series premieres on Sunday, August 11 at 10p, immediately following the Food Network Star finale, which airs at 9p. The series is produced by Embassy Row.

E!‘s new original series Pop Innovators kicks off with the story of seven-time Grammy Award-winning musician and creative innovator will.i.am. The one-hour special is told in the star’s own words, along with shared stories from those in his inner circle, including Fergie, apl.de.ap, Taboo, Red Foo, Jimmy Iovine and friends from his  old neighborhood. Pop Innovators: will.i.am premieres Sunday, July 14 at 8p.

ABC Family launches its fifth annual Summer Crush on Monday, July 29. The 10-day long summer programming event is filled with all-day marathons, movies and new episodes of original series Switched At Birth, The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars, Twisted, The Vineyard, Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy and Spell-Mageddon; plus, the network television premieres of Prom and So Undercover and the ABC Family premiere of 17 Again.

Sonar Entertainment and James Patterson Entertainment have tapped Brad Furman to direct Patterson’s New York Times best-selling book series turned original television series Private. The show centers on former CIA agent Jack Morgan, who runs the world’s most elite investigation firm. Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro of Tribeca Productions will serve as Executive Producers, with Berry Welsh serving as Co-Executive Producer. Patterson also serves as Executive Producer, along with Leopoldo Gout of James Patterson Entertainment.

Smithsonian Channel‘s Aerial America takes off with an all-new season on Sunday, July 14 at 9p. The series, which offers the ultimate bird’s eye view of our country, is shot from a helicopter equipped with a state-of-the-art Cineflex V-14 HD camera system. This season, the series will showcase Montana, Ohio, Minnesota and West Virginia.

Shout! Factory a leading media company devoted to producing, uncovering, preserving and revitalizing the best of pop culture, has announced the official launch of Scream Factory TV at youtube.com/screamfactorytv. Game on! Syfy and Trion Worlds have announced a new contest that brings a gamer into the television world of Defiance, the online open world shooter and television series on Syfy. The “Play the Game, Join the Show” in-game contest pits players against the game’s Arkfall events to see who can rise to the top and become the ultimate Ark Hunter. The winner’s character will be featured during the second season of the TV series. To enter, players must register for the contest at www.defiance.com/en/game-show-contest.

Want to catch up on or get introduced to Unforgettable? CBS has made all 22 episodes of the show’s premiere season available at CBS.com, via the CBS App for iPad and iPhone users, and via select CBS Audience Network partner sites. The show is slated to return with all new episodes on Sunday, July 28 at 9p.

Meanwhile, ABC Entertainment’s Digital Media team is making the full season to date of Mistresses available through July 22, 2013 on WatchABC.com and the WATCH ABC app, which is free on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Kindle Fire and select Android devices.  “Mistresses has been one of our most popular shows on WATCH ABC this summer,” said Karin Gilford, senior vice president of Digital Media, ABC Entertainment Network. “We think as more people begin to discover the show, they’ll want to catch up on previous episodes.”

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS ~

Style Media has signed a development deal with writers Graydon Sheppard and Kyle Humphrey to create a style-centric alternative format series based on their web series Sh*t Girls Say. The series will take the character made famous by their YouTube videos and have her explore the worlds of fashion, beauty and lifestyle through her singular point of view.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

Meredith Vieira is returning to daytime. The former host of Today and The View is launching her own nationally syndicated daytime talk show, The Meredith Vieira Show, in fall 2014. The daily New York City-based show will be produced and distributed by NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution with Vieira also serving as an executive producer. The show, which will be taped on a set that resembles Vieira’s home, will offer a mix of human interest stories, celebrity guests, and lifestyle segments. “Each day, I hope to accomplish what I call the three H’s: Heat, Heart and Humor,” said Vieira.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Rob Lowe will reprise his guest starring role as eccentric film star Eddie Nero in one episode of the upcoming seventh season of the Showtime hit Californication. The comedy series is currently shooting in Los Angeles for a 2014 premiere.

Omar Dorsey, who co-starred in Django Unchained, has booked a multiple-episode arc on the final season of HBO‘s Eastbound & Down. Dorsey will play Dontel Benjamin, a former NFL player turned loudmouth talk-show host.

Sam Heughan has been cast in Starz and Sony Picture Television‘s new original series Outlander. He’ll play Jamie Fraser, a strapping young Scottish clan lord with a complicated past and a disarming sense of humor. The series, which is slated to premiere on Starz in 2014, begins filming in Scotland this fall.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

CBS distributed Europe’s three most valuable imported drama series titles in 2012. NCIS led the pack by generating $205 million, according to the Top 100 Imported Drama Titles in Europe report. The three CSI franchises appear in the top 10. Only one of the top 10 titles, Sturm der Liebe, originated from outside the US. These rankings are based on the value created by each title for the broadcasters.

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision won the night among A18-49 viewers Friday with a 1.5/6, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda was #1 at 1.5/6, followed by ABC’s Shark Tank at 1.1/5. Univision’s Amores Verdaderos led at 9p at 1.8/7. NBC’s Dateline Classic ranked second at 1.2/5. NBC’s Dateline Classic took over the top spot at 10p at 1.5/5. Univision’s Que Bonito Amor trailed at 1.3/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Charlie Vogt has been named CEO of Harris Broadcast. Vogt, who previously served as president and CEO of Genband, is a 25-year veteran of the technology and communications industry. He succeeds Harris Morris who left the company earlier this month.

A&E Networks UK has appointed Heather Jones as Vice President of Programming. Jones will be responsible for programming strategy across the company’s channels in the UK, Central Europe, Benelux, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Greece and Africa, and be charged with driving audience growth through original commissions and co-productions, A+E Networks’ US output and third-party acquisitions. She last served as Managing Director of North One Television.

YES Network has announced two promotions. Mike Webb has been upped to Vice President, Broadcast Operations. Webb, who previously served as Senior Director, Broadcast Operations, will oversee long-range planning, field and studio operations and engineering. Rob Brinkmann has been promoted to Director, Studio and Production Planning. Brinkmann, formerly Manager of Production Planning, will oversee all studio operations and transmission for YES and will provide field operations support.

CMT has announced two appointments. Julia Silverton has been named Vice President, Development, and Zena Van Ackeren has been hired for the newly created position of Vice President, Talent and Specialty Casting. Silverton will oversee the development of a broad range of the network’s programming, while Van Ackeren will develop the channel’s new internal casting division and work alongside external producers and casting directors.

ABC News veteran Mark Lima is moving to Fusion, the new network for Hispanics from ABC and Univision. Lima has been appointed the network’s Vice President of News. Lima was most recently part of the team at Nightline.

Mindshare, the global media agency network that is part of GroupM, has named Colin Kinsella as its new Chief Executive Officer for North America, effective July 15. Kinsella, formerly CEO North America for Digitas, a Publicis agency, will be responsible for the management and operation of all Mindshare activities in five U.S. cities and Canada.
