Discovery Communications, Sony Corporation through its US affiliate, Sony Corporation of America and IMAX Corporation joined in partnership to develop and launch the first 24/7 all-3D television network in the US by 2011. All three entities are equal partners in this new venture with a shared goal of spurring consumer purchases of 3D televisions and establishing the network as a leader in the 3D home marketplace. International distribution of the upcoming network will be considered in select markets. Content for the network will include natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, motion pictures and children’s programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment and IMAX as well as from other third-party providers. Operationally, Discovery will offer network services such as affiliate sales and tech support in addition to 3D television rights to Discovery content and cross-promotional support across its 13 US networks. Sony will serve up advertising/sponsorship sales support and work to license TV rights to current and future 3D feature films, 3D music and game content in addition to providing cross-promotions at retail stores. IMAX will also secure licensing rights to future 3D films, offer promotions via its owned and operated movie theaters nationwide and provide a variety of owned and patented image enhancement and 3D technologies. Oversight of the upcoming network will come from a board of directors consisting of members from each company though daily operations will be managed by a separate staff. A search for the network’s general manager starts immediately.

Simultaneously, ESPN announced it will launch ESPN 3D this year with a goal to present 85 live sporting events within the first year. ESPN 3D will begin with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup game on June 11 with South Africa taking on Mexico. Additional events to be produced in 3D include up to 25 2010 FIFA World Cup games, Summer X Games, college basketball and football encompassing the BCS National Championship game on January 10, 2011. ESPN has developed and tested ESPN 3D for more than two years. 

CBS’ Evening News with Katie Couric is sporting a new introduction voiceover as of this Monday from Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman. The new voiceover by Freeman replaces the voice of the late news anchor Walter Cronkite. Even though Cronkite passed away last July, CBS opted to not immediately replace Cronkite’s voiceover which was recorded in 2006 as Couric became the anchor of the Evening News.

TV One introduces the world premiere of the new African-American produced comedy Love That Girl! starring Tatyana Ali, created by Bentley Kyle Evans and executive produced by comedian/actor Martin Lawrence. The four-part half-hour sitcom will begin with two back-to-back episodes at 9p on January 19 with one new episode airing on January 20 and 21 at 9p. The plot has Ali as a young divorcee who returns home to southern California, launching a career in her father’s real estate business and reuniting with her family and old friends. Encore episodes of Love That Girl! will air at midnight each night. Additionally, the January 19 episodes will repeat at 930p on January 20 and 21.

HISTORY deconstructs favorite foods in its newest series Food Tech, opening January 21 at 9p. Host Bobby Bognar travels the US searching for the origins of much-loved meals such as Chinese Take-Out, Cheeseburgers and Fries and more, revealing the production secrets at the same time. Actuality Productions produces the 10-episode series for HISTORY.

PBS launches a new weekly four-part series exploring America’s immigrant tapestry as Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. premieres February 10 and airs on Wednesdays through March 3 at 8p (check local listings). Based on the success of his previous series, African American Lives, Harvard scholar Gates unravels the genealogy and genetics of 11 famous Americans to answer the questions “What made America?” and “What makes us?” The participating guests include poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, writer Malcolm Gladwell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, film director Mike Nichols, Her Royal Highness Queen Noor, actresses Eva Longoria and Meryl Streep and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Faces of America is produced by Kunhardt McGee Productions, Inkwell Films and THIRTEEN for WNET.ORG in association with Ark Media; THIRTEEN New York is the series presenter.

Fox Reality Channel opens a new reality dating series, Seducing Cindy on January 30 at 9p, featuring Cindy Margolis, referred to as the most downloaded female on the web. The single mom of three kids is ready to find her true love as she considers 24 suitors ranging in ages from 18 to 71 years old during eight one-hour episodes. Glassman Media produces.

Starting this Saturday, Animal Planet is flipping the start times of two of its canine-themed series. It’s Me or the Dog will air at 8p and Underdog to Wonderdog will air at 9p.

ABC Family’s season 2B debut of The Secret Life of the American Teenager Monday at 8p attracted 2.12 million A18-49 viewers as well as 4.5 million total viewers. Following at 9p, the network returned a new season of Make It or Break It which drew in 1.2 million A18-49 and 2.7 million total viewers.

Food Network kicked off the New Year Sunday night with its highest-rated, most-watched night in the network’s history. Super Chef Battle: An Iron Chef America Event delivered 7.6 million total viewers and a 2.0 rating among A25-54. New series Worst Cooks in America posted a 1.3 A25-54 rating and 4 million total viewers.

Ohio-based Radiant Life Ministries, Inc. purchased independent WRAY-TV, based in Wilson, NC from MTB Raleigh Operating, LLC and MTB Raleigh Licensee, LLC.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Twentieth Television, Inc.’s animated sitcom Family Guy from Seth MacFarlane will remain in off-net syndication on FOX and Tribune stations through the 2014-2015 season. Family Guy began in syndication in the fall of 2007. Additionally, animated series American Dad, new to the syndication marketplace and also from Seth MacFarlane has been picked up in more than 19 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas, representing 40% of the US.

Spanish Broadcasting System said its Latino TV network Mega TV will be available by January 11 in Chicago, Dallas, Fresno and Palm Springs. Mega TV, distributed nationwide via DirecTV Mas, is available in 11 markets and reaches more than 5.2 million households in the US and Puerto Rico.

Frantic Films acquired the international rights to factual entertainment content produced by The Eyes Television Production Ltd, a unit of Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. The Eyes library consists of more than 150 hours of programming, giving Frantic Films approximately 500 total hours of content, including 67 hours currently in production. Peace Arch holds the US and Canadian rights to programs purchased by Frantic Films.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC approved a new yet-to-be-titled comedy pilot headlined by Adam Carolla where the comedian also executive produces. Carolla plays a contractor and a father whose life goes awry when his wife leaves him. Universal Media Studios is producing as well as Jackhole Industries and BermanBraun. Along with Carolla, Kevin Hench will executive produce the singe-camera sitcom in addition to Jon Pollack, Jimmy Kimmel, Daniel Kellison, James Dixson, Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun.

truTV is moving forward with new series, Southern Fried Stings centering on Jay Russell, a former state trooper and his team as they go after criminals involved in drug dealing to stealing. Zoo Productions and Studio Lambert are producing with the series scheduled to premiere this March.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: FOX rang in the New Year on a sweet note Friday night, delivering a 4.9/13 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX began primetime a winner with the Sugar Bowl Pre-Game at 8p with a 2.4/7 while a three-way tie occurred for second place between ABC’s Better Off Ted repeat, CBS’ Ghost Whisperer encore and UNIV’s Gancho Al Corazon all at 1.1/3. At 9p, FOX’s coverage of the Sugar Bowl won with 6.0/16 and UNIV’s En Nombre Del Amor was solo in second place at 1.2/3. The Allstate Sugar Bowl declined in ratings for FOX through 10p yet still was on top with a 5.0/13 and ABC’s 20/20 secured #2 with 1.7/5.

Ratings held steady for both networks at 9p as FOX’s AMW: America Fights Back posted a 1.8/5 and CBS remained in second with Crimetime Saturday at 1.4/4. CBS did best at 10p with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.6/5 while NBC’s Law & Order: SVU rerun came next at 1.4/4.

During 7p, FOX was the clear winner at 6.1/16 with an average of NFL Sunday, the Post Gun and The OT while CBS took second place at 4.1/11 with an average of CBS NFL Regional, Post Gun and 60 Minutes. At 8p, NBC’s Football Night In America Part 3, the Sunday NFL Pre-Kick and the start of the Sunday Night Football game averaged a winning 5.3/13 followed by FOX at 3.6/9, the average of The Simpsons and The Cleveland Show. Then at 9p, NBC remained at #1 with the Sunday Night NFL match at 6.8/16 and ABC gained second place with Desperate Housewives at 5.3/12. FOX’s ratings for the Fiesta Bowl dipped slightly at 10p though still at #1 with a 4.5/11 while ABC’s new series Conveyor Belt of Love was #2 at 2.6/7.
