Pernell Roberts, 81, best-known for his stint as Adam Cartwright on Bonanza, died Sunday of cancer at home in Malibu. As one of the Cartwright brothers, Pernell stayed with Bonanza for six seasons, opting to leave the show in 1965. Pernell’s departure from Bonanza, after fulfilling his initial six-year contract, shocked Hollywood and many thought his career would be forever hurt as a result of leaving a top-rated show at the pinnacle of its popularity. For the next 14 years, Pernell made numerous appearances on TV shows including The Virginian, Hawaii Five-O and Mission Impossible among others. He also toured with theatrical musicals The King and I, Camelot and The Music Man. In 1979, Pernell was cast in the title role of series Trapper John, M.D., a spin-off of MASH. The series was on the air until 1986. Later, Pernell was host and narrator for the TV series FBI: The Untold Stories from 1991-1993.

Mera Lome, 34, a producer for ten-plus years at the New York bureau of Extra, died Monday following a serious illness. Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, c/o Ms. Holly Gibout, Northwestern Memorial Foundation, 676 N. St. Clair Street, Suite 2050, Chicago, IL 60611.

Film and TV actor, Johnny Seven, 83, died last Friday from lung cancer at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA, reports THR. During his 40-year career, Johnny acted in 26 films such as The Apartment, The Last Mile and Guns of Timberland as well as appearances on 600 television shows including 30 episodes of Ironside along with Chips, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Batman, The Wild Wild West and Charlie’s Angels among many others. Johnny is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith; one son; one grandson; and four sisters. A memorial service will be held February 6 at St. John Baptist de La Salle Parish in Granada Hills. E1 Entertainment sold pay TV rights in Latin America for four series. Majority Rules (26 eps, 30m) was sold to Cartoon Network; Stormworld (26 eps, 30m) was picked up by HBO Ole; Remedy Me (13 eps, 30m) and Skin Deep (52 eps, 30m) were both acquired by Discovery.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Picture Box Distribution picked up two series for its factual library. Beauty Call (26 eps, 30m), from Worldwide Bag Media and produced for Canada’s W Network, is a makeover series hosted by Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic. The second series, Switch (13 eps, 30m) is a discussion show focusing on specific topics of classic television. Buck Productions produces for TvTropolis in Canada.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HISTORY is hitting the road with Larry the Cable Guy in a new 13-episode series Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy (wt), set to premiere this third quarter. Larry will “get it done” as he travels the US in search of real history while discovering different lifestyles, jobs and hobbies that are uniquely American. The series is produced for HISTORY by Pilgrim Films & Television and Parallel Entertainment.

Forest Whitaker will likely star in a spin-off of CBS’ Criminal Minds as the Academy Award-winning actor is in discussions with the network about the possibility. The project, presented during an episode of Criminal Minds this spring, is about a new group of profilers who work outside the FBI. Whitaker would portray Cooper, the squad leader and a father-like figure to the other team members. ABC Studios, the Mark Gordon Company and CBS Studios would produce the spin-off with Chris Mundy writing the script.

Nick Davis Productions is partnering with Sloane Cooper Development to produce a 20-episode crime series for AETN’s global Crime & Investigation Network. The one-hour series, tentatively titled Bloody Hard Work, will focus on top forensic labs and will debut worldwide during fourth quarter 2010.

ABC gave a nod to three more pilots: a drama pilot called No Ordinary Family from Greg Berlanti and Jon Feldman (Dirty Sexy Money) and the comedy Freshman from Greg Malins, Arianna Huffington and 20th TV. ABC also said okay to an untitled multi-camera comedy from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman (Just Shoot Me) and ABC Studios about adult siblings dealing with their parents’ recent divorce.

CBS okayed a new comedy spec from Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (How I Met Your Mother) titled Livin’ on a Prayer. CBS also ordered two other drama pilots, Chaos from Brett Ratner and an untitled procedural from Ed Redlich (Without a Trace). Livin’ on a Prayer will be produced by 20th TV and contains a premium license fee and a large penalty if it doesn’t go to series. Shot similar in style to How I Met Your Mother, Livin’ on a Prayer is a multi-camera romantic comedy set in Pittsburgh about a young couple and their friends. Chaos, written by Tom Spezialy is about rogue CIA operatives who take on the negative aspects of their jobs involving incompetence and political infighting. Spezialy executive produces with Ratner for 20th TV. The untitled drama from Sony TV and CBS Studios is about a NYPD female detective who has the ability to remember everything. Redlich and John Bellucci are writing the script and executive producing along with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly. Originally the project was titled The Rememberer and CBS picked it up last September with a large commitment.
