Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel and Disney XD are partnering with Common Sense Media in an initiative to help kids/tweens learn to safely make their way around the internet and various other digital platforms as well as encouraging parents think about how media and technology fit into their family’s life.  The effort includes a public service announcement (PSA) and website, which will include Characters from Disney Channel’s series Phineas and Ferb and will support Common Sense Media’s safety digital media ‘guide’, Rules of the Road.  The PSA will premiere tonight at 8p on both Disney Channel and Disney XD.  Additionally, Disney Online has created a companion website, , which includes the PSA, a parent online safety guide, and invites kids to test their parents’ knowledge.  Common Sense Media will show the PSA in Washington DC this week at the 6th Annual State of the Net Conference.

The last Harry Potter movies in 3D?  Warner Bros. is reportedly planning to release Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the two-movie adaptation of JK Rowling’s last Potter book, per THR’s Heat Vision blog reports that is indeed that plan for.  Warner Bros. has not confirmed the story.  The report also says that the studio has been doing 3d conversation tests on it movie Clash of the Titans.

The Gotham Group options author Kat Falls’ tween-targeted novel Dark Life, per VarietyScholastic Press will publish the first title, of a two-book deal, this May 1, 2010.  Additionally, the publishing rights to Dark Life have been sold in six languages.  Dark Life is set sometime in the future where rising oceans have consumed much Earth’s land, leaving many living very closely on the remaining land except for those who have decided to explore living in communities underwater.  The story revolves around a teen boy who has grown up in one of the underwater homesteads and a teen girl from Topside (land), who together uncover a government conspiracy. Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman will produce.  Also serving as a producer is Gregory Little, who brought the project to Gotham Group.

In Australia, Buster Dandy Productions and Sticky Pictures announced they are merging.  The new company will operate under the Sticky Pictures banner, with Donna Andrews as CEO, Stu Connolly as Head of Animation and Justine Flynn as Head of Live Action.  Sticky Pictures is best known for its kid-targeted animated series Pearlie (26×24), a co-production with Nelvana, and Dennis & Gnasher (52×12), which is based on the UK comic strip and produced in association with Red Kite animation UK.  Sticky Pictures is a founding partner in Australia/Asia distribution company Mango Distribution, which focuses on kid and family properties.  Buster Dandy brings a greenlit co-production sitcom to the new company, details of which are TBA.

TVOntario gives marblemedia the green light for a third season of the K7-10 targeted TV series Taste Buds, an interactive food adventure show that encourages kids to get involved in the food shopping, cooking, eating and cleaning up.  With recent funding secured from the Shaw Rocket Fund, marblemedia will produce six new episodes of the series this spring for a fall 2010, as the Taste Buds returns to TVOntario, Access Alberta, Knowledge Network and the Saskatchewan Communications Network.  All three hosts, Avery, Lily and Matt, will return for the new episodes.  The corresponding website, TasteBudsTV .com will be updated simultaneous to the launch of the new season.

MTV Networks International inks several Nickelodeon live-action program sales in Europe and Latin America:

  • In Europe: Mediaset’s Italia Uno (Italy) picks up True Jackson, VP and will premiere the series in spring 2010; RTE (Ireland) acquires True Jackson, VP, bringing the series to the territory for the first time, as well as completing new deals for Unfabulous and Drake & Josh.
  • Across Latin America: Televisa (Mexico) also takes True Jackson, VP; while iCarly is acquired by America TV (Peru), Medcom (Panama), and ATB (Bolivia), as well as being re-licensed by Televisa (Mexico); ATB picks up additional episodes of Drake & Josh and iCarly in a two year extended deal.

Toei Animation and Italian agency Backstage enter into a licensing deal to re-launch the anime property SAILORMOON in Italy.  Backstage will manage the TV, publishing, merchandising and theatrical rights for the property in Italy.  Mediaset have already acquired the TV rights and plan to air the first season of the series in fall 2010.  SAILORMOON author Naoko Takeuchi will work closely on this new endeavor.  Backstage already manages Toei Animation properties such as Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya and One Piece in Italy.

Chorion enters into a master toy license deal with Fisher-Price for its new HD CGI animated preschool series The Octonauts (52×11 and 1×22 special).  Fisher-Price plans to create products in a range of categories including plush, musical talking toys, vehicles, playsets, accessories, bath and role-play toys, and electronic learning aids, among others.  Based on the by the design team Meomi, The Octonauts is currently in production, with the HD CGI animation being produced by Brown Bag Films (Olivia, Noddy in Toyland, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty).  The Octonauts has been pre-bought by CBeebies (UK), TF1 (France) and ABC Australia and will launch this year.  The toy line is set to rollout in the UK and France 2011.

Hasbro renews its global master toy licensee deal for BBC Worldwide‘s preschool series In the Night Garden.  Moving forward Hasbro will extend the product offerings for the property.  In the Night Garden will get a new look with the launch of a new ‘friendship theme’ in fall/winter 2010.  The new theme will extend across all BBC Worldwide licensed In the Night Garden categories and integrated into style guides, packaging and non-toy licensee product ranges.  Launched in the UK in 2007, In the Night Garden is produced by Ragdoll Productions and distributed and licensed by BBC Worldwide.

Fitz Roy Media signs a deal with Hybrid Apparel to serve as the US apparel licensee for its Heathcliff and Funny Face brands.  Under the two-year deal Hybrid Apparel takes the rights to manufacture and distribute Heathcliff and Funny Face-themed apparel for boys, girls, juniors and young men and men (e.g. t-shirts, novelty tops, wovens, two-fers and tanks, beanies, caps, fleece outerwear, jackets and hoodies).  Products will be introduced at the annual Magic Marketplace next month in Las Vegas.  Public Group Licensing, Fitz Roy Media’s exclusive US licensing agent, brokered the deal.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) completes two new licensing pacts in South Africa for two Nickelodeon properties:

  • NVCP enters into a two-year licensing deal with Laceys Promotions, toy distributor and character supplier, that will see Dora the Explorer ‘Lucky Packet’, filled with stickers, posters, coloring sheets and tattoos, available at supermarkets, toy stores and mass retailers.
  • Jacques Hau, character apparel supplier, and Woolworths are teaming on a line of SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer swimwear, outerwear and sleepwear, which will launch at Woolworths stores in South Africa in early 2010.
