OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is adding a new primetime home makeover series, Home Takeover with Simon & Tomas beginning March 28.  The six-episode, one-hour series features Scandinavia’s popular interior design duo Simon Davies and Tomas Cederlund as they makeover US homes.  The new series is produced for OWN by Angel City Factory.

BBC America’s supernatural series Being Human is back for an eight-week third season premiering as part of the network’s Supernatural Saturday themed night on February 19 at 9p.  Touchpaper Television and BBC America co-produce the series for the BBC.

MTV approved a fourth season of Jersey Shore and the cast is heading to Italy for the production.  Filming will begin in Italy this spring and the new season will premiere later this year.  Jersey Shore is produced by 495 Productions.

NATPE 2011:

This summer, Debmar-Mercury is teaming with Fox Television Stations to test a one-hour daily talk show titled Father Albert hosted by former priest Father Alberto Cutie (pronounced cue-tee-YEAH, in case you were wondering).  Not a stranger to television, Father Cutie made headlines when he left the Roman Catholic Church to marry the woman he loved. He also hosted Padre Alberto on Telemundo in 1999 and three years later was featured in the weekly talk show America en Vivo on Telemundo International.  Father Cutie authored the self-help book Real Life, Real Love in 2006 and his second book, Dilemma: A Priest’s Struggle with Faith and Love is out this month.

Fireworks International, the television and digital distribution unit of ContentFilm plc made several new multi-platform and non-fiction content deals with Sony Pictures Entertainment Networks Latin America.  Beginning this April, the three-year agreement involves Pay TV and VOD rights for online and mobile for a variety of titles which will air across South and Central America via properties owned by SPE Networks Latin America.  The deal includes: the series Pretty Tough with 20 eps/4-7 min and its 90m TV movie version and the hi-def drama The Cut with 200 5m webisodes and 40 eps/30 min. In addition, SPE Networks Latin America acquired the hi-def non-fiction reality series Freak Encounters with 16 eps/30m.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) signed several sales deals in Latin America:

  • TVN picked up the format rights to The X Factor which is currently in production and slated to premiere this March.
  • Talento Argentino (Got Talent format) was renewed by Telefe for a fourth season in 2011.
  • American Idol in its tenth season will be available pan-regionally through a deal with Sony airing in Central and South America and the Caribbean.
  • Discovery Latin America is renewing Project Runway for the reality series’ seventh season.  Discovery Latin America also picked up the sixth and seventh seasons of the travel series Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
  • Turner Broadcasting acquired Spike TV’s third season of Deadliest Warrior as well as the third, fourth and fifth seasons of 1000 Ways To Die after airing the first two seasons.

CABLEready is premiering two new original scripted half-hour sitcoms at NATPE produced by Dan Garcia Productions: Things We Do For Love with 5 episodes and Clunkers with 9 episodes.

In my experience at NATPE 2011 in Miami – Day 2: Elevator situation much alleviated on Day 2, in part because elevators being floor specific, and because many meetings were moved to the hotel lobby and poolside cabanas (I know, rough, right?).  In any case, that problem doesn’t seem to be as much of a problem as it was the first morning.  Next year, assuming NATPE is back in Miami again, unsolicited suggestion to exhibitors is to consider the Versailles tower where this year only Warner Bros. Domestic and Int’l TV Distribution were camped, and no lines for anything.

On Day #2, the market is still quite busy, with more talk of formats and digital channels.  And today – something that doesn’t happen nearly as often as it used to at NATPE – a new show was announced …  Father Albert, distributed by Debmar Mercury, is a strip series launching as a test this summer in partnership with the Fox Television Station group.  Rumors are a-swirling, if the show does well both Mort and Ira will convert … but again, just rumors.

The Exhibition Floor had steady traffic on the afternoon of Day 2, and set in a room just the right size, so it didn’t feel too empty or too cramped.  The Digital Seminars on the Exhibition Floor also continue to get good traction with attendees.

Outside of TV shows, the main conversation here seems to be the weather up north and potential travel situations.  So for those still here in Miami, here’s what I’m hearing about the weather for those headed toward NYC —  Wednesday: Mix of rain/sleet/snow midday and for the afternoon. At night, changing to heavy snow. Highs in the 20s to mid 30s. Then on Thursday, early heavy snow ending around dawn. Total accumulation 8-12 inches …. seriously?  Aw cripes.

As to next year — I put my vote in for NATPE in Miami again next year.  Far and away an improvement over being stuck inside a Las Vegas hotel. Really like getting outside in the fresh balmy air (cabanas … it’s all about the cabanas) and suites and exhibition floor relatively close, make this a good choice.  (did I mention the cabanas?)

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

ION Television acquired the police drama Flashpoint from CBS Television Distribution, picking up the rights to air all existing episodes and 18 upcoming new episodes currently in production.  ION Television also has the right to continue production on original episodes for season five and beyond.  Flashpoint is produced by Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment in association with CTV and CBS.

Logo gained the rights to air the second season of MTV Canada’s talk show 1 girl 5 gays.  The roundtable question and answer session-style talk show will continue to air on Logo’s weeknight, late-night schedule.  The second season debuts with 40 episodes on February 7 at midnight.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Zodiak USA is working with G3 Productions, the newly-established company owned by Kelsey Grammer, Stella Bulochnikov-Stolper and Brian Sher.  G3 is part of Grammer’s Grammnet Productions and will concentrate on unscripted entertainment programming.  The co-production deal between G3 and Zodiak USA gives Zodiak the first-look rights to all G3 projects.  Grammer, Bulochnikov-Stolper and Sher will serve as executive producers for G3/Zodiak USA productions.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. is producing and distributing its 28th hi-def television program, We The People with Gloria Allred slated to launch this fall.  Allred is a well-known attorney and has been linked with high-profile court cases involving O.J. Simpson, Michael Jackson, Scott Peterson and Tiger Woods.

Syfy commences production February 9 on the third season of Warehouse 13 in Toronto, picking up the action from the cliffhanger season two finale.  Syfy will bow the 13-episode third season this summer.  Universal Cable Productions produces.

Turner Broadcasting System International and TNT are collaborating on the new series Falling Skies set to premiere this June in the US.  Following the US debut, Falling Skies will launch on several TNT international networks and Turner Broadcasting System International will launch the series in syndication in many regions globally later this year.  Starring Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton and Drew Roy, the series is set in the chaotic time after an alien attack left the world nearly destroyed.  DreamWorks Television is producing with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer along with DreamWork’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and Graham Yost and screenwriter Robert Rodat.

CBS approved two drama pilots from Warner Bros. Television:

  • The Doctor about a mother who reunites with her adult children when she joins the family’s medical practice.  The project is from writer Rina Mimoun who serves as executive producer.
  • Hail Mary is from Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures and writer Jeff Wadlow about a Southern female private eye who partners with a street-smart hustler to solve crimes.  Wadlow and Silver are the executive producers and Beau Bauman is producer.

FOX okayed an untitled comedy pilot from Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television about a “Bridget Jones” type girl who rooms with three guys and they all reveal surprising secrets to each other.  Writer Liz Meriwether will executive produce with Peter Chernin and Chernin Entertainment’s Katherine Pope.

ABC has two multi-camera comedy pilots in the pipeline from Warner Bros. Television:

  • Work It is about two guys who dress and pose as women during the day to get jobs as pharmaceutical reps and at night they hang out at their local bar where they can be themselves.  The project is from Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen (Friends) via WBTV.
  • Lost and Found from actress Marisa Coughlan is about a New York Bartender and party girl who suddenly meets the son she gave up for adoption 18 years ago.

ABC further gave a nod for a one-hour crime drama pilot titled POE that follows Edgar Allan Poe as the world’s first detective where he uses unorthodox methods to investigate mysteries in 19th century Boston.  Chris Hollier wrote the script and will be the project’s supervising producer and Dan Lin is executive producer.  Warner Bros. TV and Lin Pictures are producing.

ABC is moving forward with the drama pilot Pan Am set in the 1960s about the legendary airline and the loves and adventures of the stewardesses and pilots.  Jack Orman (ER) will pen the script; Sid Ganis will executive produce with Tommy Schlamme and Nancy Holt Ganis.  Schlamme will also direct the pilot.
