Cynopsis: Kids!



Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards in an early morning announcement yesterday.  In the animation arena Toy Story 3 led the way with five nods, best animated picture, best picture, original song, sound editing, and adapted screenplay.  The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and air live on ABC from 8p.  The Oscars will be televised in 200+ countries around the world.  Below are a few of the categories and nominees.  A full list can be found at .

Storm Hawks (52×30) returns to the US, as Disney XD acquires Nerd Corps Entertainment‘s 3D animated comedy/adventure series.  Storm Hawks originally launched here in 2007 on Cartoon Network US.

Marvista Entertainment inks a deal with Mexico’s Grupo Televisa for the Power Rangers.  Under the deal Televisa acquires the terrestrial TV rights for Mexico to the new series, Saban BrandsPower Rangers Samurai and select classic Power Rangers episodes.  Televisa will premiere Power Rangers Samurai in October 2011, with the classic Power Rangers episodes to begin airing from August 2011. The agreement with Televisa was brokered by Ariel Tobi at Snap TV, Marvista’s Latin America production and distribution partner.  Produced by Saban Brands and Power Rangers Productions, Power Rangers Samurai is set to make its US premiere on Nickelodeon, Monday, February 7, at 8p.

Cartoon Network Latin America picks up the TV, video/DVD, merchandising and licensing, and theatrical rights to Timoon Animation’s Monk (52×3), which is part of Imira Entertainment third party portfolio.

Spain’s Imira Entertainment is tapped to represent Breakthrough Entertainment‘s mixed CGI/live-action kid-targeted series Dino Dan (52×11 and 1×22) for free TV in Latin America.  The series was recently been acquired by Discovery Kids in Latin America.  Dino Dan is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment.

Nickelodeon is set to debut new episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba!, Monday-Thursday, February 7-10 at 1p.  The new episodes feature guest appearances by The Killers, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Jack McBrayer.  Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, and produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain, Yo Gabba Gabba! is currently in its third season.

The holiday specials Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Valentine will air back-to-back on Friday, February 11, at 8-9p on ABC.  The specials are based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts characters.


Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Company have appointed Germany’s m4e as the merchandising agent for the Babar brand for German speaking Europe, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  Under the deal, m4e will develop a Babar merchandising program based on both the classic Babar brand and the new CGI-animated TV series, Babar and the Adventures of Badou.  Babar and the Adventures of Badou will premiere in Germany on KI.KA on June 11, 2011 at 6:15p, and will run in the time daily.  Universum Film will distribute the DVDs for the series in German-language regions.  Babar was created 80 years ago by author/illustrator Jean de Brunhoff.

Coolabi completes four licensing deals for its new preschool property Poppy Cat.  New licensing partners for Poppy Cat include a book publishing tie-in with Macmillan, a regular feature will appear in two Redan magazines, Fun to Learn Friends and Fun to Learn Favourites, as well as a license deal with Aykroyd and TDP Licensing for nightwear and underwear, and a games and puzzles pact with Jumbo Games for launch at retail in 2012.  Co-produced by King Rollo and Coolabi Productions, Coolabi’s TV production arm, the Poppy Cat series will make its premiere on Nick Jr UK this May 2011, and rollout internationally thereafter.  The series is based on the preschool character created by Lara Jones in her Macmillan books series.

European game developer Jumbo Games is prepping a line of brainteazing Smart Games for Toy Fair 2011 this week in the UK, a line that has already launched in Australia, Russia and the US Key titles, which are geared toward a range of ages, include Camelot, Anti Virus, Monsters and North Pole Camouflage.
