NATPE 2012:

Ovation will premiere the original miniseries Cloudstreet beginning March 10 at 10p.  Cloudstreet has 5 one-hour episodes plus one 90-minute episode and is distributed internationally by rights management company Target Entertainment.  The debut of this miniseries fits in with Ovation’s new branded programming night, “The Best You’ve Never Seen.”  Cloudstreet is based on the novel by Tim Winton and was produced by Australian-based Screentime Pty Ltd.

The recently formed joint venture, Lionsgate-TISA International (Television Internacional Sur America) forged a deal which will provide Turner Broadcasting System, Latin America, Inc. with the exclusive Latin American TV rights to the series Anger Management, Boss and Nail Files in addition to select feature films from its library.  The deal also allows TBSLA to have a first-run window for its channels in Latin America and Brazil for Anger Management and Boss for the life of both series.

Cyn’s Notes from NATPE 2012  Miami:

Two particular topics finding their way into the conversations at this year’s NATPE.  First, it’s the amount of people who are here this year who have not been to NATPE in many years. Many I’ve spoken with haven’t been here for 4 or 5 years; and I overheard one gentlemen say he hadn’t been here in 17.

And someone else pointed out that the opening night gathering around the Bleu Bar in the main lobby of the Fontainebleau looked for all the world like a Who’s Who of the Television Industry.   That’s exciting to see people returning to a convention, and a salute to the organizers. So kudos to Rick and his team.

The other topic that seems to be in every discussion is digital.  While the why’s and wherefore’s continue to be a discussion point, but that this topic has reached “must be considered” status in every deal, is a new benchmark. The questions being asked about digital include how to facilitate social media; where will this take us next; the field is moving so fast  how do we keep up and continue to be relevant; how to discern what the next big thing will be; and of course, how to monetize the efforts.

And in case you are wondering, I’m happy to report no wardrobe malfunctions today, and thanks to everyone who chimed in with helpful hints.   Who needs Heloise!?!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

After NBC aired the special airing of G4’s American Ninja Warrior finale last summer, NBC and G4 are continuing and expanding their partnership on the series for 2012.  This summer, G4 will air the preliminary rounds and NBC is set to air the preliminary finals in addition to the grand finale.  The new season of American Ninja Warrior marks the first time the competition is being held entirely in the US.  A. Smith & Co. Productions returns to produce the fourth season of American Ninja Warrior with the company founders Arthur Smith and Kent Weed serving as executive producers.

Yesterday, NBC approved a slew of comedy pilots in development:

  • Downwardly Mobile stars Roseanne Barr where she will play the owner of a mobile home park and surrogate mother to the diverse people who live there.  This is a multi-camera sitcom from 20th Century Fox Television with Eric Gilliland (Roseanne) and Barr as writers.
  • Jimmy Fallon will be the executive producer on an untitled comedy about three 30-something guys who enjoy parenting even though they still act like kids.
  • Animal Kingdom is a single-camera workplace comedy from Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka about a grumpy veterinarian who loves animals but usually hates the owners.
  • Go On is a single-camera comedy pilot from Scott Silveri (Friends) about an irreverent though charming sportscaster who tries to regain his life after loss through a mandatory group therapy session.
  • Friday Night Dinner is a comedy pilot from Greg Daniels (The Office) based on a UK format about an unusual family that has dinner together every Friday night.
  • Next Caller Please is a single-camera gender comedy about a macho alpha male DJ and his new spunky feminist co-host set in the offices of a satellite radio station.
  • Another comedy is from Hilary Winston centered on a shy though determined woman who is dumped by her fiancé and gets help from her co-workers to come out of her shell and plot revenge.
  • Daddy’s Girl is a pilot from Aaron Kaplan (Terra Nova) about a young woman who comes home from abroad and finds her father is in a serious relationship with the mean girl from her high school.

CBS ordered a cop drama to pilot named Golden Boy from Greg Berlanti.  The plot follows one cop’s meteoric rise from officer to detective to Police Commissioner.  Nicholas Wootton is on board to write and be an executive producer along with Berlanti.  Warner Bros. Television is producing, home of Berlanti’s new overall deal.

Ben Stiller is turning his attention to HBO where he will star, direct and executive produce a new comedy pilot called All Talk.  Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer is behind the project which is described as “politically, religiously, culturally, intellectually and sexually irreverent” and is about the dramas of a Jewish family in Washington, D.C.  Alan Alda is presently in negotiations to star in the series.  Production on the pilot is tentatively slated for this fall.  Stiller and Foer in addition to Scott Rudin and Eli Bush will all serve as EPs.

The long-time host of What Not To Wear, Stacy London will executive produce a new untitled fashion series for TLC.  The series will center on husband and wife business owners Lisa and Jim Dolan who own a plus-size clothing store and the customers who shop there.  Scott Shatsky will also be an executive producer with London and Julie Merson for Super Long Play.  BBC Worldwide Productions is producing.

UK’s Channel 4 commissioned the sketch comedy show Anna and Katy’s Television Programme as a full series from Roughcut TV.  The pilot of the show aired last summer and Channel 4 ordered six episodes.
