CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/25/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 25, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas:

Say hello to The CW, a new network comprised of what will be the former WB and UPN networks. CW presumably is a combination of parent company names, CBS and Warner Bros.  The new network launches in September 2006, effectively shutting down UPN and WB at the same time.

Programming: As far as programming, the lineup will marry the best from both networks.  Precisely what shows will be carried over to the new CW has not yet been announced, but the potentials list includes America’s Next Top Model, Girlfriends, Everybody Hates Chris from UPN, and Gilmore Girls, Smallville, and Reba from the WB.  The final word will come from Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment for CW.  The schedule will mirror the current WB model: M-F 8-10p, Sun 7-10p, Sun 507, and M-F afternoons from 3-5p as well as Saturday mornings 7a-12n with Kids WB lineup.

Network Affiliations: Basically, Tribune-owned WB stations will be rebranded The CW in the market; while CBS-owned UPN affiliates will get the CW affiliation in those markets.  However, it gets more complicated in the seven markets where Tribune and CBS own overlapping WB and UPN affiliates–that is, Boston, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Seattle.  Here’s the breakout:

  • Tribune will be the CW affiliate in Boston, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Houston, Denver, St. Louis, Portland, Indianapolis, San Diego, Hartford, and Albany.
  • CBS owned UPN stations in 12 markets will be rebranded The CW in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle, San Francisco, Detroit, Tampa, Sacramento, Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach, Norfolk, Oklahoma City and Providence.
  • As far as all the other markets with both a WB and a UPN affiliate, one or the other will get the new brand, which by definition means the other will now be a new Independent.  The full distribution of the new network is expected to exceed 95% of the country.

Management: Dawn Ostroff, currently President of UPN, will become President of Entertainment and John Maatta, currently Chief Operating Officer of The WB, will become COO of The CW.  Bill Morningstar, The WB’s EVP/Advertising Sales will become the head of sales reporting to Maatta. Other responsibilities that will report to Maatta include business affairs, network distribution, legal, finance and human resources.

On the NATPE floor, here are some of the issues the news of this new merged network raises:

  • Programming:  A sudden slew of new independents all looking to fill their primetime schedules … with what? Movie packages suddenly become a premium, first or second airings of daytime talk programs, sitcoms.  These stations have a very short time to prepare and a lot of time to fill.
  • The WB 100+ Station Group:  What happens to this entire entity?  Does it fall by the wayside as over-the-air affiliates take the new CW affiliation? Speculation suggests yes.
  • Current Network Affiliations: How will CBS/Warner Bros. choose between the current WB and UPN affiliates in markets where there is no Tribune or CBS owned station?  By overall ratings strength, as well as by depth and significance of current programming contracts?  And how soon will these notifications be made so that programming to fill the void in September can be purchased?
  • Syndication: Certainly, this will be a true boon for the syndication business with a flock of new Indies on the horizon.  And a return for fuller and more significant movie packages, as well as the weekly barter action hours.  A couple of likelihoods – more off-net syndication coming from cable to broadcast; and fast-tracking some off-net 60m series into syndication. And potential for international hours returning to the US for primetime weekly airings, tho residual money may suggest that is a foolhardy idea.
  • Financial Impact:  There will likely be several markets where a station will lose its affiliation, thereby greatly diminishing the station’s value. These are often stations that have also taken out bank loans to upgrade to digital, and will still have to pay those loans.  The prediction from NATPE attendees is many of these stations will go dark and/or sell at drastically reduced rates.
  • The Upside:  Tribune no longer is committed by 22% to the WB Network, and footing 1/5 of the financial loses – and owns none of the new network.  Additionally, though it will continue to pay reverse compensation to the network, the likelihood is it won’t be as steep. At the end of the day, it gets network affiliates that are potentially stronger than either WB or UPN individually, have all the best in programming both have to offer, including says Dennis Fitzsimmons America’s Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, Gilmore Girls, Girlfriends and Veronica Mars.

 *MORE GOOD STUFF*NATPE Programming Highlights:

  • NBC Universal has cleared The Megan Mullally Show in more than 70% of the country for a fall start.  Among the newest clearances are WHDH/Boston, WDIV/Detroit, WFTV/Orlando, WFTS/Tampa, WOIO-WUAB/Cleveland, KNSD/San Diego, WISN/Milwaukee, KTVK/Phoenix, KARE/Minneapolis, WISH/Indianapolis and WBAL/Baltimore.

A new distribution deal signed with Stephen J. Cannell and Carsey-Werner, where the timing couldn’t be better (see top story).  The Stephen J. Cannell library will be handled by Carsey-Werner, both domestically and internationally, and includes a number of 60m shows such as Wiseguy, A Team, The Commish, Hunter, 21 Jump Street, The Rockford Files and others, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

God has spoken – and he had nothing to say about The Book of Daniel, which has been unceremoniously dropped from its Tuesday 10p time period on NBC. The show drew criticism from the American Family Association, and was not carried by 7 NBC affiliates due to content issues. Wtih that said, ti wasn’t the content that caused the network to drop the show, it was the low viewing numbers.

Mobile media provider InfoSpace Inc. and fuse, have bonded for a mobile entertainment initiative whereby InfoSpace will provide fuse with mobile content including ring tones, graphics and games. This content will be available to consumers on the fuse mobile storefront in the second quarter of 2006.  The mobile content will be connected to on-air series via a code which the consumer will then use to place their order from a mobile storefront managed by InfoSpace.

Fox Networks Group’s Fox Reality network has paired with 2waytraffic, an interactive content developer and producer, to create a new subscription service for mobile phone users whereby the consumer will be able to access daily recaps of various series on the network. They will also be able to respond to sweepstakes as well as calls for auditions. The service is expected to launch this spring.
