The Style Network premieres the third season of real-life series Ruby on February 14 at 8p, following Ruby Gettinger as she continues to lose more pounds and confronts deep and hard issues from her childhood that may have contributing to her excessive weight gain. Ruby is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions.
Beginning April 23, Starz pairs the second season of Party Down back-to-back with the premiere of its new dramedy, Gravity. Opening at 10p, Party Down introduces new cast member actress Megan Mullally as Lydia Dunfree, a middle-aged woman who has high hopes her 13-year old daughter will make it big in Hollywood. Gravity, debuting at 1030p follows a group of suicide survivors who meet through an out-patient program.
Cablevision Systems Corp. and Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales unit of Comcast Cable made a new five-year deal to resume their partnership involving the New York Interconnect (NYI). Operating as a limited liability company, NYI offers a variety of interactive products for use by New York regional advertisers and their agencies. Products include traditional 30-second TV ads across more than 60 cable networks in addition to online advertising and long-form content opportunities.
E!’s Live from the Red Carpet: The 2010 Golden Globe Awards airing on Sunday from 6-8p, drew in almost 1.7 million total viewers and posted a 0.87 rating with A18-49 and a 1.37 rating among W18-34.
Monday’s series premiere of American Pickers at 9p on HISTORY attracted 1.6 million viewers among A25-54 and A18-49 as well as 3.1 million total viewers. The debut of American Pickers becomes HISTORY’s most-watched series premiere since Ice Road Truckers launched in 2007.

Twentieth Television, Inc. announced its syndicated version of Are You Smarter Than a 5TH Grader? was renewed for Fall 2010 on Fox Television Stations in Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas and on Tribune’s stations in New York and Philadelphia. The half-hour rendering of Are You Smarter Than a 5TH Grader? is produced by Mark Burnett Productions and Zoo Productions with Jeff Foxworthy as host. Specific stations renewing the game show include: Fox Television Stations’ KTTV-KCOP/Los Angeles; WFLD-WPWR/Chicago; KDFW-KDFI/Dallas; WTTG-WDCA/Washington, D.C.; KRIV-KTXH/Houston; and WUTB/Baltimore; Tribune’s WPIX/New York; WPHL/Philadelphia; KCPQ-KMYQ/Seattle; KTXL/Sacramento; and WPMT/Harrisburg; and on Local TV’s WDAF/Kansas City and KTVI-KPLR/St. Louis.
CBS Television Distribution (CTD) said new syndicated strip series Swift Justice With Nancy Grace has sold in 90% of the US including all Top 50 markets. Recent station groups picking up the series for two years include Freedom Communications, Inc., Mission Broadcasting, Grant Communications, New Vision Group, Communications Corp. of America, Cordillera Communications and Gray Television, Inc. Swift Justice will roll out this fall, airing double half-hours mainly in the afternoon and early fringe time periods.
Ovation TV made carriage deals with Comcast Corporation in the San Francisco, Philadelphia and Atlanta markets, adding more than 5 million to the network’s subscriber base. Ovation TV reached 35 million by the end of 2009.
ReelzChannel was added to Comcast’s Digital TV channel line-up in Annapolis in addition to Anne Arundel, Calvert and Charles Counties in Maryland.
Outdoor Channel said it gained more than 4.9 million new subscribers, representing a +16% increase during 2009. Outdoor Channel, according to Nielsen, now has a total subscriber base of 34.5 million households and is available in such major markets as New York, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami and Phoenix. Additionally, Outdoor Channel HD grew in 2009 by 2.5 million homes and now has 4 million total subscribers.
Sportsman Channel has plans to launch a hi-def version beginning January 25. Sportsman HD will simulcast programming currently found on the standard-def Sportsman Channel. Starting out, 33% of Sportsman’s primetime programming will air in hi-def with a likelihood of a majority of all programming will be presented in hi-def by this third quarter.
Si TV launched on Comcast’s Digital Preferred Package in the San Francisco Bay Area at the end of 2009. With this addition, Si TV is now available to more than 22 million homes.
FOX is moving ahead with a US version of the UK hit sci-fi series Torchwood, involving the original series creator, Russell Davies as script writer. BBC Worldwide Productions is producing the US version about an undercover group that investigates and battles aliens. BBC America aired Torchwood, bringing in record ratings for the network. Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter will executive produce along with Davies. John Barrowman who headlined the original series as Capt. Jack Harkness may star in FOX’s version, if the network orders the project to pilot.
Three networks picked up a trio of pilots, per THR:
ABC okayed the comedy Happy Endings from producer Jamie Tarses’ company Fanfare and Sony TV about a couple who break up at the altar, leaving their friends in a quandary.
CBS approved the buddy cop show The Odds from Warner Bros. Television, set in Las Vegas where the cops are just as nutty as the crimes they solve.
FOX gave a nod to the multi-camera comedy Nevermind Nirvana from 20th TV about a traditional guy from India who goes against his family by not becoming a doctor and having a baby with a white woman.
Summit Entertainment is partnering with independent studio E1 Entertainment to co-develop and co-produce a television series inspired by the 2009 feature film Push from Summit. The series, like the film will be a sci-fi thriller about people who possess paranormal powers working together to take down a corrupt government agency. Screenwriter David Hayter will write the TV pilot while the project will be produced by E1 and Dark Hero Studios, co-owned by Hayter and producing partner Benedict Carver. Hayter and Carver will also executive produce as well as E1’s Noreen Halpern and John Morayniss. The three main entities, E1, Summit and Dark Hero Studios are talking to US broadcasters about the series.
Vin Di Bona and Bruce Gersh together have formed FishBowl Worldwide Media to develop projects for film and television and new media as well as partnering with marketers, digital companies and ad agencies located in the Hollywood creative community. Di Bona will be the venture’s Chairman while Gersh will serve as President/CEO.
ITV Studios, Inc. made an overall production agreement with producer Jamie Roberts and his Los Angeles-based company, Escalate Television, LLC. Under the terms of the deal, Escalate Television will develop and produce non-fiction series and formats with ITV Studios.
Casting Call: A major reality television production company is seeking housewives living in Southern California who play Bunco for a new reality show tentatively titled Bunco. Friday A18-49 Analysis: CBS bested the competition Friday night, placing first among A18-49 at 2.2/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Ghost Whisperer won with 2.2/7 followed by ABC’s SuperNanny at 1.6/5. CBS continued in #1 at 9p with Medium at 2.2/7 with UNIV’s Sortilegio next at 1.9/6. CBS completed a clean sweep of the night by posting a third 2.2/7 during 10p for Numb3rs while ABC’s 20/20 was second at 1.4/5.

Golf Channel upped Regina O’Brien to the position of SVP/Marketing where she oversees all marketing and promotional activities for the network and its new media outlets such as GolfChannel.com. Regina has been with the Golf Channel since 2007, joining as VP/Marketing and Brand Management.
Mitch Goldstein joins QVC in the newly created role as GM/On-Air. Mitch is in charge of merging QVC’s merchandising strategies together with its live programming. Most recently, Mitch headed his own company, Zachary/Blair Productions.
Public television program distributor American Public Television (APT) elevated Jamie Haines to VP/Communications as of January 11. Jamie will lead communication efforts for APT, its roster of programs and other channel partnerships. Jamie has held the position of Director/Communications with APT since 2007.
Warner Bros. International Television Distribution (WBITD) hired Andrew Zein as SVP/Creative, Format Development and Sales for the company’s newly established international television production unit. Andrew reports to Ronald Goes, EVP/Head of International Television Production. Based in London, Andrew will work in tandem with Ronald to develop and execute the division’s creative and licensing goals. Andrew will additionally supervise all operations pertaining to the development and production of global programming.
