CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

01/18/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Cable operator Insight Communications Company unveiled its plans to launch a new family-friendly programming tier beginning summer 2006.  The digital programming package will feature a lineup of 15 channels, for $13/month, and will be available to subscribers as an add-on to their Basic service, which includes approximately 21 channels.  The new programming tier will include: HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, C-SPAN 2, CNBC, CNN Headline News, The History Channel, The Weather Channel, Discovery Kids, Discovery Science, Nick GAS, Disney Channel, Toon Disney, PBS KIDS Sprout and Trinity Broadcasting Network.  Insight Communications is the 9th largest cable operator in the US, serving approximately 1.3m customers in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

Genius Products, Inc. has sold its Baby Genius brand for $3 million to the newly-formed Pacific Entertainment Corporation, which is headed by the Baby Genius creators Klaus Moeller and Larry Balaban.  Under the deal Pacific Entertainment will hold the worldwide rights and existing licensing agreements for Genius Product’s Baby Genius and Wee Worship preschool brands, along with a production deal for Little Tikes music and DVD series.  Meanwhile the deal, according to Genius, enables it to focus its efforts on distributing indie and mainstream feature film titles while retaining exclusive US distribution rights for Baby Genius, Little Tikes and Wee Worship DVDs and music CDs and all new products under these preschool brands.  Genius Products, Inc. is the exclusive US home entertainment distributor for The Weinstein Company.  Pacific Entertainment plans to release two new Baby Genius DVDs and two new Little Tikes DVDs this year in addition to new music CDs.

Microsoft Corp. has teamed with 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. to develop a new children’s entertainment property.  Under the agreement, 4Kids Entertainment will serve as the exclusive worldwide licensing agent for a forthcoming kid’s entertainment property for Microsoft Game Studios across all broadcast, home video, music and merchandise licensing rights.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Premiering this weekend on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim is the new original 15-minute series Moral Orel, on Sunday, January 22, at 12 midnight.  From Dino Stamatopoulos, Moral Orel is a stop-motion animated series about a church-loving young boy named Orel. This show will definitely look and sound familiar to Davey and Goliath.  However, unlike Davey and Goliath, in this series the mix of Orel’s “enthusiasm for piousness and his misinterpretations of religious morals” regularly end strangely and sometimes unpleasantly. Although, being an Adult Swim series, Orel remains ever happy and reverential and keeps coming back for more.  As funny as this series looks like it will be, it is not intended for a younger audience.  Previously Stamatopoulos was a writer for Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Mr. Show with Bob and David and was a contributor to Tom Goes to The Mayor (Adult Swim), TV Funhouse (SNL) and The Ben Stiller Show.

Once upon a time there was a CG animated movie titled Hoodwinked and it did well at the box office its first weekend – and do you know what happened next?  Yep, The Weinstein Company and Kanbar Entertainment revealed they are already working together on a sequel to Hoodwinked that will be titled Hood vs. Evil, per Variety.  The sequel will have twice the budget of Hoodwinked, and there might be as many as two additional movies in the series after that.  Hood vs. Evil will be penned and directed by the creatives behind Hoodwinked, Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards and Tony Leech.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Hosted by Bear from Disney Channel’s series Bear in the Big Blue House, the new site was developed in conjunction with educational experts to help preschool aged kids develop kindergarten readiness skills as well as have fun.  The site also includes a Parents’ Corner area where adults can manage multiple children’s profiles and track their child’s activity. Brandissimo! Inc., a family entertainment production company, has introduced Spectrum Connections, an entertainment brand designed specifically for kids with autism and related disorders. The initial Spectrum Connections release includes two DVDs: Connecting Emotions through Music and Connecting Body Movement through Music and companion CD.  The videos feature Balloo, a computer-animated character, and are hosted by Elizabeth Balzano, MA, MT-BC, a practicing music therapist.  Designed for the unique needs of autistic children, Spectrum Connections is produced under the guidance of autism medical specialists.  The DVDs and CD were created and directed by Cleve Keller, the mother of an autistic child.  Spectrum Connections is distributed by Genius Products, Inc.  The series is Executive Produced by Bill Gross, President, Brandissimo Inc. along with David Snyder and Frank Fraser; the latter two are former Disney creative executives who worked on properties including Thomas the Tank Engine and Winnie the Pooh.

4Kids Entertainment Home Video, Inc. in association with Funimation Entertainment will release its Yu-Gi-Oh! Volume 4.2: My Freaky Valentine DVD on February 7, 2006.  This eight episode, three-hour DVD features two multi-episode storylines, My Freaky Valentine Part I, II & III and Fate of the Pharaoh Part I, II & III.  4Kids Entertainment Home Video, Inc. is the home video unit of 4Kids Entertainment, Inc.

Answer to yesterday’s trivia question:
This powerful  young girl had an Aunt Hilda and Zelda who taught her many things. Who was she?  SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH     Kudos to:  Maggie Wainwright-Comcast Spotlight/Pittsburgh; Laura Lady-Fisher Price/NY; Allison Hill-Cartoon Network/Atlanta; Katharine E. Heintz-Knowles/Falmouth ME; Heather Floore-KTVD/Denver; Izzy Neis-Star Farm Productions/Chicago; Gina Dierks-Pappas Telecasting/Omaha; Jill Hipps-Commonsense/San Francisco; Corrina Miller-RPA/Santa Monica; John Bickenbach-Global Icons/LA; Paul Gilbert-Sony Pictures TV/Culver City; Nancy Bergman-Comcast Spotlight/Sacramento CA; Aurelie Steinberg-Cartoon Network/Paris; Lynn Valiquette-Ellis Releasing/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question: When one cousin moves to New York from LA and his annoying little cousin from Atlanta moves in with him, it proves to be bad chemistry.  Although this annoyance was funny, he insisted on always getting his way and reeking havoc.  Hint: Nina was a neighbor. What show was this? Who or what was it an advertisement for (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
