Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

This week marks PBS Kids Go! and The Jim Henson Company‘s exclusive online launch of the comedy digital puppet series Wilson & Ditch: Digging America.  The series was created by Joe Purdy (story editor/Dinosaur Train, Sid The Science Kid) and Craig Bartlett (creator/Dinosaur Train, Hey Arnold), and produced by The Jim Henson Company.  Targeted to K6-10, Wilson & Ditch: Digging America takes viewers on a cross-country adventure with two gopher brothers (performed by Brian Henson and Paul Rugg), learning about American culture, history and geography along the way.  In addition to the webisodes, Wilson & Ditch also features interactive games, original comics a travel blog, online location audio podcasts, and downloadable activities from Wilson and Ditch’s adventures.

Little Airplane Productions‘ new animated preschool series, Tobi (4×4), is set to make its worldwide launch on Sunday, March 7 on Nickelodeon Australia and Treehouse TV (Canada).  The series debut coincides with UNICEF’s annual International Children’s Day of Broadcasting, which encourages broadcasters to air programming for, about or by kids.  The short-form series revolves around a young boy, Tobi, who wants to make the world a better place and focuses on global issues in an age appropriate way, including human rights, endangered species and homelessness.  A traditionally hand drawn animated series featuring backgrounds created with recycled materials, Tobi is written in verse and uses a combination of stylized jazz and dialogue to support the narration.  Tobi is produced at Little Airplane’s NYC studio, with the company’s Supervising Producer Tone Thyne heading up the production.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Actor Peter Sarsgaard is in discussions to take on the role of the evil Dr. Hector Hammond in director Martin Campbell’s live-action feature film Green Lantern, per THR‘s Heat Vision.  The cast of the Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC Comic‘s Green Lantern comic book already includes Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.  Set to head into production this spring, Green Lantern is scheduled to open on June 17, 2011.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Moonscoop inks sales across French speaking Canada for 15o+ half-hours of animated programming: VRAK acquires the CGI animated series Casper’s Scare School (26×30); with TFO taking Chloe’s Closet (52×11); TVA picks up both seasons of the 3D animated series Dive Olly Dive, and the short-form paper cutout show Ava Riko Teo (67×7); and TeleQuebec acquires season two of 3D animated HD series SamSam (52×6.5).

Chuggington pulls into Asia with new broadcast and consumer products partners.

  • Series creator/producer Ludorum extends its relationship with Disney to bring Chugging to territories including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, and the series launched on Playhouse Disney in October.  Additionally, further deals will see Chuggington air on Free TV on TVB (Hong Kong), TV3 (Malaysia), YOYO TV (Taiwan) and basic pay channel, Truevisions kids (Thailand).  Chuggington also debuted on TV12 (Singapore) in November.
  • Additionally, Ludorum appoints Medialink as Chuggington’s agent in the region.  Medialink has already secured 14 licensees across 14 product categories including: Vendermac (stationery/back packs/party ware); Pacific Gear (playsets/creative play/inflatable pool toys); T&G Holding (watches/clocks); Supervalu (apparel/shoes); Harmony Creative Ventures (accessories  umbrella/PVC swim bag); Pelican Publishing (magazine/activity books); J-Tex (bedding/homewares); Xtension Pacific (underwear/sleepwear); PT Adinata Melodi Kreasi (bags/stationery); Dung Jin (stationery/homewares); Anywell (footwear).  Product will launch in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Taiwan from spring 2010 alongside RC2’s master toy launch.

Longtime Farrar, Straus, & Giroux (FSG) children’s book editor Margaret Ferguson will launch her imprint, Margaret Ferguson Books, in 2011, per Publishers Weekly.  The new imprint plans to publish 15 titles each year, across all ages and publishing formats.  Ferguson has spent 30 years with FSG, the last 16 years as Publisher and editor at FSG Books for Young Readers.  Ferguson will continue to report to FSG Books for Young Readers publisher, Simon Boughton.

MARKETING/LICENSING

4Kids Entertainment International completes further licensing deals for the Dinosaur King property: Trade Mark Collections will launch bags and backpacks, as well as purses, wallets and umbrellas, across the UK and Ireland; Harper Collins plans to publish a range of titles (storybooks, coloring and activity books, gift books, novelty books, annuals and novels) in the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand; and Artpeople A/S is set to launch storybooks in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.  These new publishing deals come on the heels of the September 2009 launch of the first Dinosaur King magazine in France, published by Tournon.  Publishers Blue Ocean (Germany) and Edizioni Playpress (Italy) are also scheduled to launch their respective Dinosaur King books and magazines in 2010.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) is teaming with Just Imagine Consulting (JIC) to expand Care Bears in South Africa.  JIC plans to grow the property in the region by developing and implementing a new licensing and merchandising program.

Toei Animation completes a range of licensing deals in various categories across Latin America for Dragon Ball Z: Editorial Vertice (Argentina) will produce activity and coloring books; GVD (Brazil) will produce Dragon Ball Z footwear; Daysal (Argentina) is developing a line of dinnerware; in the food/candy category  Andina (Peru) will create Dragon Ball Z chocolate bars, Cadbury (Argentina) is developing various candies, Chupa Chups (Mexico, Caribbean) is making lollypops, and Up Marketing (Argentina) is also creating lollypops; and Lexiboox (Argentina) will create special games for use on laptops.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) appoints several to its Corporate Communications team.  AnneMarie Kane is upped to SVP/Communications, MTVNI, she will report to Linda Alexander, EVP/Corporate Communications, MTVNI.  Kate Larkin Laverge joins the company in the newly created position of VP/Communications, MTVNI and MTV Networks UK & Ireland, reporting dually to Alexander and David Lynn, EVP/Managing Director for MTVN UK, Ireland and Australia.  Additionally, Bernadette Simpao is named Director/Communications, MTVNI.
