Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/13/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

As news spread yesterday of an attack on China’s top search engine site Baidu, Google let it be known that it may cease and desist business operations in China altogether. The company called attention to a highly sophisticated attack on its corporate infrastructure in Dec. that resulted in the theft of intellectual property, then later found out that at least 20 other large companies have been targeted. “We have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists,” wrote Google’s David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer in a blog post. ” … this information goes to the heart of a much bigger global debate about freedom of speech.”

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

TravelChannel.com completed a relaunch featuring reduced clutter, improved navigation, added functionality and a new video interface showcasing a more extensive library of online travel videos. The content is now organized via travel locations, allowing you to search by city or destination to pull up relevant content. Try the cool “Spin the Globe” application to be randomly taken to the travel guide of popular destination.

NBC’s Todayshow.com launched its new food and recipe site, showcasing recipes and video cooking tips from celebrity chefs and food experts who have appeared on Today’s Cooking School segments. Viewers can search for in-depth instructions on how to prepare each meal featured, collect and store their favorites recipes. The content is also available on mobile devices via msnbc’s WAP site.

Online-TV search engine developer SetJam announced it is opening up its API to launch an online “TV Everywhere” widget platform of its own to enable third party sites to leverage SetJam’s search and show information technology. (SetJam’s business model includes taking a piece of TV show and movie purchases.) The company has been targeting large entertainment concerns and will next turn its attention toward online sports subscription services, according to CEO Ryan Janssen.

Google
announced it will be rolling out a new cloud-based data storage service, enabling users to upload any file up to 250 MB in size (including word docs, PDFs, spreadsheets and presentations) in order to access it remotely. The first GB of storage is free for docs you don’t convert to one of the Google Docs formats and additional storage can be purchased for .25/GB per year.

Friendster, the social networking service acquired by Malaysian payments company MOL Global in Dec., struck an partnership with Yahoo Southeast Asia to launch integrated product features and promotional initiatives across both the Friendster and Yahoo! web properties. Friendster, which MOL Global paid close to $30 million for, enjoys a huge marketshare in Southeast Asia – the company says 90% of its daily traffic comes from the 90 million users in the region. Integration include:

  • Implementation of The Friendster Application on the Yahoo Homepage and Toolbar

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Adhering to the adage less is more, National Geographic Digital Media has competed a major overhaul of NationalGeographic.com and the results really cut down on clutter and help showcase the site’s amazing photography. The new interface is built upon the open source Django framework developers have praised for its elegance and simplicity. NGDM’s entire archive of content is gradually being converted to the new CMS and the open source framework will enable the group to build an APIs third party developers will be able to more easily tap into. Nat Geo’s design calls attention to visual themes and queues that nicely tie the entire site together from a UI perspective. Now the Photo of the Day, a feature for 8+ years, is the first thing you see, downloadable as a free wallpaper. Top core categories – Photography, Environment, Adventure, Travel, NatGeo TV, Kids and Shop, tie in every page on the site. “Great care and detail have gone into the fine grain articulation of the design,” says Rob Covey, NGDM’s SVP/Content Development & Design,” including the use of spacing, white space, airiness, navigational signals and ease of reading.” Come back to the site Thur. or Friday to check out a new page-formatted video player NGDM says will better showcase its library and add must have social sharing features.
