Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 11, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Yoram Gross has sold its 50% stake in Yoram Gross-EM.TV, the Australian animation production company, to EM Entertainment, which is the other 50% shareholder in the company.  Geoff Watson, GM/Yoram Gross-EM.TV, has been upped to Managing Director of the company, effective immediately.  Moving forward Yoram Gross-EM.TV plans include establishing production entities with indie Australian producers, expanding its digital media division Forest Interactive to focus on DVD board games and Mobistax, expand its mobile trading card platform and the use of its orchestral recording stage Trackdown Digital.  The Gross’ will continue to hold a majority share in a related company, Yoram Gross Productions, until its current slate of productions is completed to ensure continuity of production and creative control.  Yoram Gross was founded by Yoram and Sandra Gross about 40 yrs ago.  EM Entertainment partnered with Yoram Gross in 1999, when it acquired its 50% stake in the company from the previous holder Village Roadshow.  Yoram Gross-EM.TV shows include Blinky Bill, Dot and the Kangaroo, Flipper and Lopaka.

Nickelodeon Movies and producers Lawrence Bender and Karen Barber have inked a two-picture deal.  Bender and Barber’s first project is to develop/produce The Five Ancestors, a movie based on the book series of the same name from author Jeff Stone and Random House.  Set in 17th century China, The Five Ancestors is the story of five young monks, each an expert in a different style of “animal” kung fu that reflect their individual personalities. The Five Ancestors movie will incorporate the first two books of the series, Tiger and MonkeySnake, the third book in the seven-book the series will be published March 2006.  The second picture to be produced under the deal is the CGI animated feature Holy Cow.  The movie is about Bamboo, a young bull from Montana who befriends a caterpillar that tells him about India where cows are sacred, which spurs an around-the-world journey.  Holy Cow is based on a spec script by Ted Grennan and Peter Kalmbach.  This deal marks Bender’s first kid/family movies.

It was Disney‘s turn yesterday at the Television Critics Association press tour where Gary Marsh, President/Entertainment, Disney Channel Worldwide introduced new series and original movies and schedule information:

  • The Emperor’s New School, the new animated series from Disney will have a cross-platform launch on Disney Channel, Disney Channel on Demand, Toon Disney and on ABC’s ABC Kids. The Emperor’s New School launch schedule: Disney Channel-on-Demand on Friday, January 20; Disney Channel, Friday, January 27 at 7:30p (following its debut on the channel the series will move to its regular time period on Friday and Saturdays 5p); ABC Kids on Saturday, January 28 9:30a; and Toon Disney, in its regular time period, Monday, January 20 at 3p.  The series is based on the movie The Emperor’s New Groove (2000).
  • Disney Channel will premiere both a new original series titled Hannah Montana and its new original movie Cow Belles, on Friday, March 4, 2006.  Cow Belles will bow first at 8p with Hannah Montana following immediately.
    • Cow Belles is the story of wealthy, freewheeling teens whose exasperated father decides to put them to work to teach them about the responsibility.  But the bigger lesson comes when someone empties the company’s bank accounts and the girls face a whole new kind of life.  Cow Belles stars sisters Alyson Michalka (Phil of the Future) and Amanda Michalka (Oliver Beene), also known as recording artists Aly & AJ.
    • Hannah Montana is a live-action comedy about Miley, a teen girl who moves from Tennessee to Malibu, with her older brother and widowed father, a songwriter.  What the kids at her new school don’t know is Miley is a pop singer named Hannah Montana.  The series stars newcomer Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso, Jason Earles and real-life father of the series lead, country music recording artist Billy Ray Cyrus.
  • Beginning production next month is Disney Channel’s original action/adventure movie Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, which stars 17 yr-old Brenda Song.  Slated to bow in summer 2006, Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior is a story of a popular Chinese-American teen whose goal is to be homecoming queen.  But her life takes a turn when a young monk, Shen, shows up and informs her that she’s a reincarnated Chinese warrior and is needed to save the world.

Mad Catz Interactive, Inc., a third-party video game accessory maker, has entered into an exclusive North American distribution agreement with In2Games, a UK-based hardware manufacturer and entertainment software publisher.  Under the deal Mad Catz picks up the rights to distribute the Gametrak motion capture system in the North American.  Mad Catz will also launch two Gametrak compatible game titles for PS2, Xbox and PC in the market as well.

The teens from MTV’s reality series Laguna Beach have been signed by Iconix Brand Group, Inc. and will be featured in its Bongo spring 2006 ad campaign.  The multimedia campaign for the youth targeted Bongo line will be featured online, in-store and in magazines including Seventeen, Teen People, Us Weekly, Star and Teen Vogue, as well as some public appearances by the Laguna teens.  Iconix Brand Group, Inc. markets and licenses Candie’s, Bongo, Bagley Mischka, Joe Boxer and Rampage and other trademarks for apparel and footwear products.  The company’s subsidiary Brightstar Footwear, Inc., arranges for the manufacture of footwear products.

Engage In-Game Advertising, an independent in-game ad agency has officially opened its doors for business.  Engage is offering advertisers services including planning and placement strategies to place ads in video games for all platforms.  Additionally, Engage is working with companies on a regional and local level on a market-by-market basis, allowing advertisers to better target their brands to audiences geographically.

The first 5 minutes of Hoodwinked, The Weinstein Company’s CGI animated movie, will be previewed on Nickelodeon tomorrow, Thursday, January 12, at 8p. The movie opens on Friday.  A family comedy, Hoodwinked turns the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale upside down, beginning the story at the end.  The cast includes the voices of Glenn Close, Jim Belushi, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Anderson, Patrick Warburton, Andy Dick, Xzibit and others.  Nickelodeon did a sneak peak of Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in October 2005.

Fox Searchlight Pictures has upped Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley to COO from their previous posts as President/Distribution and President/Marketing respectively.  Together Utley and Gilula along with Peter Rice, President/Fox Searchlight Pictures, will manage the company including production, acquisitions, marketing and distribution.

Craig Hunegs has been upped to EVP/Business Management, Warner Bros. Television Group, the announcement was made by Bruce Rosenblum, President, Warner Bros. Television Group.  Craig will serve as the senior business executive in the recently created Warner Bros. Television Group, which has oversight of and a broad mandate to grow all of Warner Bros.’ television businesses–including production (Warner Bros. Television, Telepictures Productions and Warner Bros. Animation), worldwide distribution (Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution) and broadcasting (The WB).
