Cynopsis: Kids!

1/10/07

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

A bushel of Apple news out of the company’s annual Macworld event in San Francisco where Steve Jobs, CEO/Apple unveiled the much discussed and highly anticipated anticipated iPhone as well as the new Apple TV set-top box.  Additionally, the Apple also announced it has changed the company name from Apple Computer to, hope you are sitting down, Apple Inc.  I know, very exciting.

  • Slated to be available this spring, the iPhone has a touch-screen and music, video and web capabilities, a 2 megapixel camera, lots of storage and will set you back $499.  Apple has teamed with Cingular, which will serve as the exclusive iPhone carrier, and Yahoo for email and Google for its online Google Maps for the mobile phone.  And yes – I have already said no to my 14-year-old, who didn’t seem to mind that the iPhone doesn’t have over the air iTunes Store downloads, the nor can he increase the memory.  Other things that seem to have some scratching their heads is that the iPhone battery is not removable, no 3G or wireless synch ability to your base machine.
  • The Apple TV box plugs right into your TV and provides consumers with the ability to wirelessly send music/video/photo content to the Apple TV and thus your TV, from as many as five computers that are within wireless range.  The Apple TV will go for $299 when it goes on sale next month.

Iwao Takamoto, best known for designing Scooby-Doo along with a host of other Hanna- Barbera animated series (e.g. The Secret Squirrel Show, The Great Grape Ape Show, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and the movie Charlotte’s Web (1973)) passed away.  He was 81.  Takamoto began his career at Disney where he worked under Disney’s “nine old men,” on movies including Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians.  More recently Takamoto was VP/Special Projects, Warner Bros. Animation.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Paula Abdul will wear several hatz for her involvement in Bratz: The Movie, the live-action movie based on MGA Entertainment’s Bratz doll line, according to Variety.  Abdul will star in the movie, serve as a consultant on the production, offering her input on casting, dancing and music as well as fashion and she will be an executive producer.

M. Night Shyamalan will write, direct and produce a live action feature adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, per the Hollywood Reporter.  Produced by Paramount and Nick Movies the picture will be the first in an Avatar trilogy with Shyamalan.  Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series was created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

Jay Leno and Jennifer Coolidge have joined the voice cast of Igor, Exodus Film Group’s CG animated comedy feature film.  Leno will lend his voice King Malbert, the village’s Machiavellian ruler with Coolidge voicing the role of Sybil, the town vixen.  Directed by Tony Leondis, from a screenplay by Chris McKenna, the movie revolves around Igor, a lab assistant, who dreams of becoming a scientist and winning the top prize at the Evil Science Fair.  The cast also includes John Cleese, Christian Slater, and Steve Buscemi, Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon.  The Weinstein Company holds the worldwide distribution rights to the movie.

MORE KIDS STUFF

This week marks the debut of two new channels from In2TV.com, the Warner Bros. and AOL joint broadband network that offers free on-demand programming content.

  • The Looney Tunes Channel programming line-up offers 100 animated shorts, produced from1936-1964, including some rarely seen titles and the first screen appearances of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Daffy Duck.  Additional content will be continually added to the channel.
  • Rock ‘n Flix Channel features musical performances from noted artists from Warner Bros. movies.  Initial content on the channel includes performances by Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Frankie Avalon from the movie Jamboree, Willie Nelson in Honeysuckle Rose and Prince in Purple Rain, as well as Jimi Hendrix performing Hey Joe and Purple Haze, Whitney Houston singing I Will Always Love and rappers Run-DMC and Kurtis Blow from Krush Groove among others.

GD Multimedia, a newly-formed distribution company, will be at NATPE next week with Going Wild (26 x 30′), a new animated TV series targeted to K6-11 that is currently running in Japan on the cable and satellite channel Kids Station.  Going Wild is the first of three animated properties produced by Tokyo Kids, the Japanese animation studio, that GD Multimedia will distribute to broadcasters in the US and Europe.  An environmentally friendly comedy, Going Wild revolves around a group of kids from a big city who wind up suddenly transplanted to the countryside where they learn about nature from the kids they meet there.  In addition, GD Multimedia also has the first look rights for future Tokyo Kids productions.

Nickelodeon is partnering with BET in an agreement for BET to air two of Nickelodeon’s live action series, the new Just Jordan and the year-old Romeo!. Just Jordan, which premiered on Nickelodeon on January 7, will debut on BET on January 13 at 10a, followed by Romeo! at 1130a.  As part of the two networks’ deal, the Just Jordan season one episodes will premiere first on Nickelodeon followed by BET one week later while Romeo!’s three seasons will air on Saturdays.

In continuation to its original announcement in 2006, DIRECTV has announced the launch timeframe for Championship Gaming Series, a new global video gaming league, this spring.  Available for broadcast in more than 100 million households around the globe, the league will also air in the U.S. on DIRECTV’s The 101. The Series will expand to include North American, Latin American, U.K., European, Middle Eastern, Asian and Australian teams battling for more than $1 million in prizes.  Final talks are underway between DIRECTV and British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) and STAR Asia to broadcast the Series in addition to partnerships with Fox Interactive Media’s IGN Entertainment for online coverage.  In addition to an international expansion beyond the U.S. game reach, the Series will also offer team members the chance to be drafted by franchises and paid salaries as full-time pro gamers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Foothill Entertainment, Inc. has acquired the worldwide TV and international home entertainment distribution rights to the tween/teen targeted Hip-Hop Kidz: It’s a Beautiful Thing direct-to-DVD movie, from HHK Entertainment LLC. Executive produced by industry veterans Mark Bacino and Jim Green, Hip-Hop Kidz: It’s a Beautiful Thing, the first in a series, was released on DVD in the US in October 2006 by Genius Products, packaged with a bonus CD featuring music performed by the Hip-Hop Kidz group.  Additionally, Penguin Young Readers has published the first two titles in a series of books.  Plans for the Hip-Hop Kidz include a TV series, more movies, a live tour and mobile and telephony content as well as a range of consumer products.  Weitzberg Consulting, Inc. is handling the marketing and licensing for the property.

Playskool is introducing Made For Me, a line of developmental toys for infants with each featuring a space to dock an MP3 player, developed by digital products company Creative, at CES this week.  The MP3 player can be customized by parents to play a personal music list for different activities (e.g. playtime, bedtime), selecting music from a library of 50 songs that come preloaded onto Creative’s MP3 player, or transfer music from a CD or download tracks from online music providers onto the digital music player.  Parents can then organize songs into categories or shuffle tunes randomly.  A division of Hasbro, Playskool will launch its Made For Me product in the US in fall 2007.
