CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/09/05

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 9, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox Sunday lineup change goes into effect on May 1.  As you know, American Dad joins the schedule that night, but not at 930p as originally planned, but at 830p following The Simpsons.  And, smartly, Fox will sandwich American Dad for its first three outings with two original eps of The Simpsons.  Arrested Development, having completed its complement of eps for the season, comes off the schedule for May.  As of May 22, Family Guy goes back in at 9p, and a repeat of Simpsons airs at 930p.

Casting / Development / Production:

  • Hazy Mills Prods. has optioned the rights to the syndicated comic strip Pooch Cafe, to be developed into an animated series. Hazy Mills toppers Sean Hayes and partner Todd Milliner plan to pitch the project to NBC first, followed by the other nets starting next week, per Hollywood Reporter. Pooch Cafe comic strip is the creation of Paul Galligan, and centers on a group of dogs who gather regularly at the Cafe to talk about issues of the day – mailman harassment, tail-chasing and kitty surveillance among other hot topics.
  • Also being pitched in the upcoming days to networks is a reality show from Ben Silverman and Menudo Entertainment for a new albeit much younger American Idol-esque / Next Great Rock Star type of competition.  This competition is looking to fill a spot in the Menudo music group, the same group that dismissed band members when they turned 16 (i.e., Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony). The show will hold open auditions for boys who speak both English and Spanish, are under 16, and oh yeah, they gotta be able to carry a tune. Once a new Menudo has been identified, the show will continue to follow him and the band as they work and rehears together, and ultimately produce an album.
  • Chris Noth will return to Law & Order, this time appearing as a regular character starting next season with a new partner on L&O: Criminal Intent. Noth will return as Detective Mike Logan, joining the major case squad, and splitting the case load with the current (and returning) Detective Robert Goren as played by Vincent D’Onofrio (who continues to work with his long time partner).  Basically, no one is getting displaced here, they’re just adding a new pair of detectives to the squad.
  • Showtime is busily developing a new crime drama project based on the Dexter Morgan books authored by Jeff Lindsay.  If you’re not familiar, Dexter works for the crime lab as a technician, and in his spare time is a serial killer. Though a little maturing, and with some guidance from his police officer father, he’s learned to temper his crime sprees to just those who truly deserve his attentions.  John Goldwyn and Sara Colleton are on to exec prod; James Manos Jr. will adapt the novels to television.

CBS led on Monday night with a 5.2/13 A18-49 in final ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC was a close #2 with a 5.0/12, followed by Fox 4.2/10, ABC 4.0/10, WB 2.1/5, UPN 1.4/3.  True to form, NBC’s Fear Factor owned the 8pm hour with a 4.7/12, with Fox’s Trading Spouses quick on its heels posting a 3.6/9.  WB’s 7th Heaven performed among the younger set with a 4.5/13 W12-34 (ranking #1),and ranked #3 among W18-34 with a 4.0/11. CBS ramped up at 9p with Raymond and 2-1/2 Men earning 5.9/13 and 5.6/13 respectively, while Las Vegas on NBC and 24 on Fox tied at 4.7/11.  CSI Miami dominated the 10p hour with a 6.8/17, tho NBC’s Medium continues to do well with a 5.7/14.  Supernanny drew a 4.7/11.

The Tony Danza Show, distributed by Buena Vista Television, has been officially renewed for Season #2.  It has been renewed in 115 markets, reaching 80%+ of the country for next year, including a change in the LA market where Danza gets an upgrade to daytime on one of the Viacom stations, KCBS/KCAL.

Nashville Star on USA Network will kick off its third season with LeAnn Rimes hosting on March 1 at 10p.  Judges for this go-around include Poison front man and singer/songwriter Bret Michaels, country music singer/songwriter Phil Vassar and industry executive/artist manager Anastasia Brown.  Scheduled guest-stars include Montgomery Gentry, the Charlie Daniels Band and Sara Evans, with additional artists to be announced.

Meanwhile, over on USA, Monk aired in a marathon format on Sunday night opposite the Super Bowl from 6p-11p and drew 938,000 viewers 25-54, with the 10p ep topping the night at 1.2 million A25-54 viewers.

New programming coming to TV Guide Channel in March includes a new series called Open Call.  This reality show trains cameras on a reality show casting director, Marki Costello, to show viewers the process of casting a television series.  The specific launch date to be announced.

Too tired to go out. Don’t care what they’re watching as long as their TVs on. The shut ins. The unemployed. People in prison. This is for you.”     (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.
