~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

A trio of reality series will return on NBC during the 2011-2012 season as the network renewed The Sing-Off, The Biggest Loser and Who Do You Think You Are?.  In its last run, The Sing-Off averaged a 3.2/8 among A18-49 and 9.2 million viewers; The Biggest Loser so far this season has averaged a 3.1/8 with A18-49 and 9.0 million viewers; and the current sophomore season of Who Do You Think You Are? is averaging a 1.4/4 A18-49 and 7.0 million viewers. 

Spring brings new season premiere dates for several Syfy series:

  • Destination Truth launches Season 4.5 with a live St. Patrick’s Day investigation on March 17 at 9p where the reality series visits Ireland and explores Duckett’s Grove Castle to discover the truth about the legendary banshee.  Following the live premiere, Destination Truth moves to a new night on Tuesdays at 9p for the subsequent new episodes starting March 22.  Ping Pong Productions produces the series.
  • Previously announced new hi-tech cooking series, Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen opens March 22 at 10p featuring chef Marcel Vigneron.  Mission Control Media produces.
  • Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files is back with a second season beginning March 23 at 10p.  The new season now airs on Wednesdays following new episodes of Ghost Hunters.  Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files is a co-production between BASE Productions and Universal Networks International.
  • The premiere of scripted drama/adventure series Stargate Universe’s final ten episodes is scheduled for March 7 at 10p.  SGU is produced and distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.
  • Syfy’s original scripted series Sanctuary marks its third season debut with 10 all-new episodes starting April 15 at 10p.  Sanctuary is produced in association with Syfy and is distributed by Tricon Films and Television. 

This Saturday, MSNBC premieres the new docu-series spinoff Life After Lockup following the lives of inmates after leaving prison who were previously featured on the network’s long-running prison docu-series, Lockup.  Life After Lockup opens with the one-hour pilot episode at 1a on Saturday.   The series is an MSNBC original production and is produced in association with 44 Blue Productions.

CBS made a two-year streaming deal with Netflix involving television series from its library beginning this April.  The deal includes episodes of such series as Medium and Flashpoint as well as full seasons of classic sitcoms Cheers and Frasier.  The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed.   As part of the deal, CBS can renew the agreement for up to two more years.

Cablevision Systems Corp. and Comcast Spotlight developed a partnership under the New York Interconnect (NYI), which offers interactive advertising capabilities to 3.2 million digital subscribers in the New York DMA.  This deal marks an industry first with two MSOs working together to allow advertisers to provide interactive requests for information (RFI) to consumers at the end of a 30-second commercial with a click of a remote control. 

Discovery Channel’s season conclusion of Gold Rush: Alaska last Friday at 10p attracted 4.55 million total viewers.  The network will air a one-hour special, Gold Rush: Alaska, Full Disclosure this Friday at 10p.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution sold both seasons of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles to Syfy.  The acquisition includes all 31 episodes of the one-hour drama which launches on Syfy April 7 with two back-to-back episodes at 9p.  Thereafter, Syfy will air four episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Thursdays from 7 to 11p. 

Starz Entertainment in the US picked up both seasons of Connor Undercover, a live-action adventure series aimed at kids with 39 30m episodes.  Starz made the series acquisition deal with Shaftesbury Sales Company, the distribution unit of production company Shaftesbury. Connor Undercover will join two other Starz Entertainment acquisitions from Shaftesbury, the made-for-television movie Vacation with Derek and the tween series Baxter.  Connor Undercover and Baxter both debut on the Starz Kids & Family channel March 1 while Vacation with Derek bows on the same channel March 6.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC Family consented to a new one-hour scripted drama The Lying Game focused on Emma, a sweet foster kid who finds out she has an identical twin sister, Sutton who was adopted by wealthy parents.  After meeting for the first time, Sutton talks Emma into switching places with her while she pursues a lead on the mysterious identity of their birth mother.  Starring in the dual role of Emma/Sutton is Alexandra Chando (As the World Turns).  The drama series is based on the novel by Sara Shepard (Pretty Little Liars) and is produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Two new reality series are on the docket for Animal Planet this summer:

  • Tanked centers on two brothers-in-law who operate the largest aquarium manufacturing company in the US. The series follows the pair as they create enormous conceptual aquariums for high-profile clients.  The six-episode series debuts this July and is produced by Nancy Glass Productions for Animal Planet.
  • Hillbilly Handfishin’ follows Oklahoma hand-fisherman and self-styled hillbilly Skipper Bivins as he leads clients in such redneck activities as noodling catfish with no fishing rods and no hooks. This seven-episode series bows in August and is produced for Animal Planet by Half Yard Productions.

A new home renovation series, Mad About the House was approved by TLC, cites Variety. The series gives couples $25,000 to renovate three rooms in their house with the twist being the woman moves out while the man makes the design decisions.  Meanwhile, the woman is working with a designer to create her dream space in a replicate room.  When both rooms are revealed, the couple finds out if their design styles are similar.  TLC ordered six one-hour episodes from Pilgrim Films and Television.  Production has begun and a May premiere is scheduled. 

Former star of FOX’s 24, Kiefer Sutherland rejoins FOX in a new pilot titled Touch from Tim Kring, creator of Heroes.  Touch is about a father (Sutherland) who discovers his autistic, mute son can predict the future.  Production on Touch is slated to begin in late May/early June following Sutherland’s stint in the Broadway revival of That Champion Season.  Touch is written by Kring and the project is co-produced by Chernin Entertainment.

Minnie Driver cast in CBS’ drama pilot Hail Mary about an Atlanta suburban single mom (Driver) who works with a hustler to solve crimes.  The pilot is from Warner Bros. Television and Silver Pictures.  Jeff Wadlow penned the script and will serve as executive producer with Joel Silver and Ilene Chaiken.  Driver was last seen on FOX’s drama The Riches from 2007-2008.

NBCUniversal International forged a development and first-look deal with Los Angeles-based Full Clip Productions.  Founded in 2010, Full Clip Productions specializes in creating and developing intellectual property for screen adaptations.

ABC negotiating with Christina Ricci to star in the network’s period series Pan Am, set in the 1960s, reports THR.  Sony Pictures Television is behind the primetime drama soap about pilots and flight attendants who worked for the iconic airline. Jack Orman wrote the script and will executive produce.  To date, Australian actress Margot Robbie was cast as a flight attendant along with Michael Mosley as one of the pilots.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS and FOX shared #1 Friday night with each posting a 1.6/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision was the top winner at 8p with Eva Luna at 1.8/7 with FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares a close second at 1.7/6.  CBS won the 9p hour with CSI: NY at 1.8/6 while ABC’s Primetime: What Would You Do? and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor tied for #2 at 1.6/5 each.  Then at 10p, NBC did best with Dateline at 1.8/6 and CBS’ Blue Bloods followed next in line at 1.5/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales unit of Comcast Cable promoted Chris Ellis as Senior Director/Communications and Dennis Marshall as Senior Manager/Promotional and Integrated Marketing.  Chris was recently the Director/Communications at Comcast Spotlight, managing the company’s external and internal communications activities.  Dennis supervises the company’s partnerships with network affiliates and key sponsors in developing customized promotional marketing efforts across Comcast Spotlight’s on-air, online and on-demand advertising platforms.  Dennis also oversees Comcast Spotlight’s e-marketing efforts.

Three promotions were announced at transit advertising company, Titan:

  • Mary Hamilton becomes SVP/Director of Human Resources and continues to be based at the company’s New York office.
  • Jeff Randazzo upped to SVP/GM of the Philadelphia and New Jersey Regions where he will now supervise all advertising sales and operations in Philadelphia and throughout the state of New Jersey.  Jeff also is joining Titan’s Executive Committee.
  • In addition, Titan is relocating Scott Christensen to the company’s Boston office where he will assume the job as VP/GM of the Boston Region.  Previously, Scott was Sales Manager in Titan’s Minneapolis/St. Paul office. 

Christal Radio, part of Katz Radio Group elevated Kelley Hoyle to VP/Sales in Los Angeles and Jason Rose to Senior AE in New York. 

Drew Hilles, CEO and Rob Williams, COO together established TheMediaDash.com, Inc., a media and advertising technology company with the goal to advance the buying and selling of radio advertising.  The company’s self-serve, online platform is still under development and is scheduled to launch during second quarter this year. 

Jonathan Lee advances to VP/Operations for RLTV where he will manage the network’s enterprise systems and operations including Broadcasting Operations and IT.  Jon also spearheads RLTV’s Digital Media group.  After this new appointment, Jon reports to Elliot Jacobson, SVP/Programming and Production.

GMC bumped Greg Madsen to VP/Affiliate Sales up from Director/Affiliate Sales.  In his new position, Greg will oversee corporate relationships with MSOs and help with negotiations and managing contract adherence.  Based in Atlanta, Greg reports to Lisa Delligatti, SVP/Affiliate Sales.

Randall Rothenberg returns to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) in the role as President/CEO of the digital trade organization.  Randall served in the same capacity from 2007 through 2010 and for the last month has been EVP/Chief Digital Officer at Time Inc.

PIC Media Group hired Christina Consuegra as Manager/Account Services in New York and Arielle Cohen as Sales Planner in Los Angeles.  Also in Los Angeles, the company promoted Philip Jespersen to VP/Integrated Marketing

RJ Palmer revealed several staffing changes:

  • Pete Regan elevated to COO.
  • In the local buying side, Cerissa Chin celebrates 10 years with the company and a promotion to VP/Associate Director, Local Buying.
  • Jonathon Donini upped to Senior Research Analyst in the Strategic Insights division.
  • Thomas Coyle added as Assistant Media Planner and Brittany Cianflone also hired as Assistant Media Planner.
