Cynopsis: Sports
02/22/12
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 22, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
HBO has landed the “other” fight of the year, locking down an agreement with Top Rank to produce and distribute Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight title defense against Timothy Bradley Jr. on June 9. The company announced last week that it had also secured the May 5 bout between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao thanked HBO during a press event yesterday and ESPN first reported the story. The event will mark Mayweather’s eighth fight in a row on HBO PPV.
TBS had its turn at the plate, announcing its MLB broadcast plans for the season that will begin Sunday, April 8 with the Yankees/Rays matchup. The channel’s 26-game slate includes games on the network every Sunday afternoon throughout the regular season, with three scheduled appearances so far by the Yankees and the Red Sox. The network will also exclusively televise the 2012 MLB All-Star Selection Show on Sunday, July 1.
ABC scored with the Knicks resurgence, drawing a 4.8 in the overnights for the channel’s coverage of Sunday’s Mavericks/Knicks game. The score marks the third-highest overnight rating for a non-Christmas regular season game since 2002. In New York, the contest scored a 10.3. The afternoon’s Magic/Heat contest also continued the upswing, with a 4.3, according to Nielsen.
While we are on the subject, MSG’s last two Knicks telecasts, on Friday, February 17 against the Hornets and Monday’s game against the Nets, continued to propel the channel in the ratings race. The two games ranked as the highest-rated regular season events on MSG since the network began tracking household ratings at the start of the 1988-89 NBA season. Friday night’s telecast drew a 7.32 Nielsen household rating with 540,788 households, only to get beat Monday with a 7.34 preliminary Nielsen household rating and 542,265 households.
FOX reportedly drew a 4.0 overnight Nielsen rating for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Budweiser Shootout on Saturday night, up 3% from last year’s race. The broadcast scored as the top-rated program of the day.
NBA Hall Of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson is going to launch a new channel via Comcast, dubbed ASPIRE, “a new African-American network designed to entertain, inform and inspire through a diverse slate of original and acquired programming in the categories of movies, documentaries, short films, music, comedy, visual and performing arts and faith and inspirational programs.” Johnson will serve as Chairman and the network, which will partner with GMC TV, will go live in June.
Tennis Channel is looking to rank the best players ever to pick up a tennis racquet, debuting 100 Greatest of all Time Presented by Ally Bank, a five-night, week long special series that will count down the game’s best of the best. The special will run at 7p beginning Monday, March 19 and run through March 23. The series will include archival footage, interviews and still images from the players’ eras with rankings decided by an international committee of players, journalists, coaches, historians and industry representatives.
On Sunday at 9:30p, ESPN is set to air the documentary GOOSE, which tells the tale of Reece “Goose” Tatum, the leader of the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1940s & ’50s, who became the most well-known and highest paid athlete in the world in spite of the segregated era. The film includes interviews with Julius Erving, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Bill Cosby, Ernie Banks and is narrated by Anthony Mackie.
ESPN’s Baseball Tonight Goodyear Express Tour made its first stop of the season yesterday, visiting the Cardinals for the first leg of its Spring Training destinations. Over the course of four weeks, the tour will hit team camps throughout Arizona and Florida with Baseball Tonight’s Tim Kurkjian visiting each stop. He will be joined at times by analysts John Kruk, Terry Francona, Aaron Boone and Rick Sutcliffe. During each visit, the analysts will interview players and provide in-depth perspective on team preparation and off-season storylines heading into the 2012 MLB season.
NASCAR announced that the organization is teaming with Creative Recycling Systems, Inc. (CRS), to join the stable of Official NASCAR Green Partners. CRS supplies small, mid-size and Fortune 100 organizations with solutions for electronics reuse and recycling.
BTN is unveiling the winners of the LiveBIG Scholarships tonight during halftime of the Nebraska/Purdue game. The channel will recognize 12 winners for Outstanding Service, which was determined by fan voting for one student from each university in the conference.
WFN: World Fishing Network has appointed Pam Stinson to the position of Senior Director of Marketing where she will be responsible for leading all marketing initiatives for the WFN brand including on-air, online and mobile. Stinson joins WFN from The Mtn.

Quicken Loans Inc. is launching QuickenLoansRacing.com in order to give fans an inside look at the world of NASCAR. The site will contain exclusive interviews with Ryan Newman and his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) teammate, Tony Stewart. Additional content includes behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the Stewart-Haas race shop, interviews with the crew that helps get the No. 39 Chevrolet to the track each week, and more.
