Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, February 21, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Viacom has made a deal to provide content on Joost, a new online TV service that is currently in beta testing phase. Joost, from the same company that created the file sharing service Kazaa and the online phone service Skype, will officially launch later this year and will offer its programming free to consumers. Joost will also provide its content partners full copyright protection and adjunct features to the programming such as links for more information, instant messaging and message boards. The content from Viacom will include shows from MTV, Nickelodeon, CMT, Logo, Spike TV, VH1, BET, mtvU, Comedy Central and movies from the Paramount Pictures catalogue of titles as well as new releases. The agreement comes on the heels of Viacom’s recent demand that 100,000 video clips be pulled off of YouTube.
CBS: Jericho at 8p
TV Land: Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg at 10p
The new syndicated strip game show, Let’s Play Crosswords, has been cleared by the NBC O&O television stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Dallas as part of a new agreement between the station group and Program Partners, Merv Griffin Entertainment and the William Morris Agency. The deal allows NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution to represent national barter advertising sales and the entities to jointly create a broadband component for the NBC stations’ web sites. All parties involved are also seeking the opportunity to produce the series at the NBC-owned studios at WMAQ/Chicago.
Grey’s Anatomy creators are looking to spin off one of the show’s characters into a second drama project, according to The Wall Street Journal. Heading out on her own would be Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd, who is played by Kate Walsh. An upcoming two hour episode will serve as the pilot of the new series, which will be written by show creator Shonda Rhimes.
CBS has picked up three more comedy pilots:
- Atlanta from CBS Paramount Network TV and Paul Reiser is about two people who meet at a funeral, and then have difficulty staying away from each other. This project has received a cast-contingent order
- Untitled Kohan/Mutchnick project from Warner Bros. TV is a workplace comedy centered on two writing partners – one straight, the other gay.
- The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud from ABC TV Studio and CBS Paramount Network TV, about a genius who has himself an epiphany, has also received a cast-contingent order.
- Added to the cast of Fox’s comedy pilot Two Families from HIP and 20th Century Fox TV is Beau Bridges. The premise is simple, Bridges is the head of two families, two wives, two sets of children. Neither family knows the other exists.
- Canterbury Laws from Apostle and Sony Pictures TV starring Julianna Margulies as a defense attorney, has added Linus Roache as her co-star, playing her husband who is also a law professor.
- You may know him as CC White in the film Dreamgirls, but next season you may also know Keith Robinson as one of the leads in the drama project The Apostles from 20th Century Fox TV about a group of LAPD cops living in Simi Valley.
- Lipstick Jungle from NBC Universal TV Studio has its third female lead — Lindsay Price joins Brooke Shields and Kim Raver in a drama about three highly successful women living and working in NYC.
Explorer, author and wilderness educator Josh Bernstein has inked an exclusive deal with Discovery Communications to join the Discovery Channel as of April 2007. Under the agreement Bernstein will create, host and executive produce specials and series focusing on a range of topics (e.g. the environment, archaeology) exclusively for Discovery Channel. You may remember Bernstein as the host of Digging for the Truth on The History Channel. For the last 20-years Bernstein has served as President & CEO of BOSS, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School.
Casting Call: America’s Next Producer, a new reality competition series for TV Guide Channel, is looking for Television Producer/contestants to compete in a series of innovative challenges that showcase their talent. The ultimate winner receives $100,000 cash, a production office in Hollywood, and a first-look deal with TV Guide Channel. No matter if you’re fresh out of school, an industry veteran, or DIY video producer – if you are serious about production and looking for your big break, this may be your ticket. For more details, check out www.tvguidechannel.com or email [email protected].
Rainbow Media has expanded its free VOD content and services under the Skool franchise by introducing Lifeskool, which replaces content originally offered on Mag Rack. Lifeskool, which launches March 29, will include VOD segments focused on personal improvement and life skills. In addition, Musicskool will launch later this year to offer consumers music lessons and instruction. Both categories join Sportskool which provides instruction on a variety of sports. All Skool brands are available free through numerous cable operators nationwide and are formatted in high definition.
CBS Paramount Network Television and The CW will have their two current sitcoms Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends available for download and purchase on the iTunes Store. The featured episodes are from this current season and new episodes will be available the day after the broadcast airing. In addition, episodes from America’s Next Top Model will hit iTunes starting early next month. Each episode will be priced at $1.99.
Also coming to digital platforms is the NBC/20th Century Fox series My Name is Earl, with the first two seasons available on iTunes as well as AOL, WalMart.com, MySpace and others. And current episodes will be available at NBC.com for the week following their initial broadcast air.
The bad news was Cynopsis was caught in the wave of Viacom video-related removal on YouTube.com, which explains why our account with YouTube and all our videos were unceremoniously removed about 10 days ago. YouTube tells me we’ll be back with all of our videos sometime in the next couple of days – apparently it takes longer to put them back than it does to remove them. The good news – you can always see the Cynopsis Daily Video on www.veoh.com where you’ll find us on the home page under Featured Channels, www.metacafe.com, www.video.google.com, www.dailymotion.com, and www.grouper.com.
Dirk van de Bunt has been hired by Guthy-Renker as SVP/Business Affairs based at the company’s Santa Monica offices. In addition, Alan Duke will become the new General Counsel/Head of Business Affairs replacing Dirk at New Wave Entertainment.
Julia Gunn has been appointed, effective immediately, as VP/Series Development and Current Programming at Lifetime Television. Julia will be in charge of scripted series development and current programming and will focus her attention on the upcoming drama series State of Mind. Based in Los Angeles, she will report to Maria Grasso, SVP/Original Programming.
Endemol USA has upped three of its executives: Caroline Baumgard is the new SVP/Development; Rob Smith has been named SVP/Programming; and Ira Chartoff has been appointed CFO for the company.
Pamela Golum was named West Coast President of Entertainment for The Lippin Group. She will report directly to company chairman and chief executive Dick Lippin.
Mobile marketing agency Soapbox Mobile named Kristen Fox Vice President of Professional Services. She will lead mobile marketing strategies and campaigns. Also joining Soapbox is Kevin Granath as Vice President of Sales & Business Development. Both will report to Soapbox Mobile CEO Vladimir Edelman.
