For its upcoming second season this fall, FOX has overhauled The X Factor, purging three out of five of its on-air talent. Judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger are now off the show as well as host Steve Jones. These moves come after weeks of speculation on whether or not Scherzinger and Jones will continue on the show and Abdul’s future with the show has also been talked about. Simon Cowell and record producer L.A. Reid will both continue as judges. In the UK, The X Factor pulls in high ratings and in its first season on FOX delivered an estimated 12.6 million viewers and a 4.4 rating among A18-49 for its Wednesday episodes.
Soon after its premiere launch, HBO has renewed its horseracing drama Luck for a second season with ten episodes. Production on the new season will resume at the end of February for a January 2013 premiere. For its opening episode, Luck drew 3.3 million total viewers across all airings. Luck stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte.
Actor Bronson Pinchot, best known for his TV role as Balki in the sitcom Perfect Strangers and movie roles in Beverly Hills Cop and Risky Business will star in the new DIY Network series The Bronson Pinchot Project debuting February 11 at 1030p. In the half-hour series, Pinchot shares with viewers his passion for restoring older historic homes in the small town of Harford, PA.

Judith Krantz’ 1978 novel Scruples gets the TV treatment as ABC agreed to adapt the book into a possible television series. Krantz’ son Tony, a former CAA agent-turned-producer/director will spearhead the pilot project along with actress Natalie Portman who also will serve as an EP. This is Portman’s first turn as a television producer. Bob Brush and Mel Harris are writing the script which will be produced by Warner Bros. Television, holder of the rights to Scruples after the studio made the 1980 miniseries helmed by Lindsay Wagner.
ABC picked up a comedy pilot project from actress Judy Greer (The Descendants). Greer, who currently also does voiceover work on FX’s Archer, will star in the comedy called American Judy and dually serve as EP. The single-camera comedy from writing partners Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont is about a sophisticated woman who gets married and is out of place living in the suburbs where her husband’s ex-wife is the town sheriff.
John Wells has a prison drama pilot project on tap at NBC through his Warner Bros. Television-based company. Bad Girls is written by Nancy Pimental and is based on a British series that follows a group of women, both inmates and staffers, at a federal prison. Pimental will be an EP along with Wells and Andrew Stern. Shed Media is also involved as a producer.
A trio of drama pilots was approved by The CW for its 2012-2013 slate. The first is titled Shelter about the staffers and guests at a New England summer resort. Mark Schwahn wrote the pilot and will be an EP with J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot’s Bryan Burk. Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television are producing. The second project is The Selection from Warner Bros. Television and writers Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, EPs on the network’s drama The Secret Circle. Craft and Fain will be EPs on The Selection set 300 years in the future about a poor woman who is chosen by lottery to compete to become the next queen of a war-torn nation. The plot is based on an upcoming book series by Kiera Cass. The third project is called Joey Dakota and is based on an Israeli TV format where a docu-filmmaker travels back in time to the 1990s where she falls in love with the rock star featured in her film and then has to figure out how to prevent his death when she returns to the present. Bert Royal wrote the adaptation for CBS Television Studios and will be an EP with Mark Harmon, Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Martha Haight.
