On Monday, syndicated game show Jeopardy! introduced the first of three episodes featuring IBM’s supercomputer Watson competing against former show champs Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Monday’s episode, according to Nielsen, posted an 8.7 overnight HH rating in the metered markets, making it the highest-rated ep in four years. The special three-day competition ends today with one claiming a $1 million prize. If Watson is the victor, IBM will donate all the proceeds to charity, and if Jennings or Rutter wins half the money will be donated. CBS Television Distribution distributes Jeopardy!.
Steven Seagal will resume production on a third season of his reality show for A&E Network, though in a different locale, reports EW. Last year production was halted on Steven Seagal Lawman, shot in the New Orleans area, after the actor was accused of alleged illicit behavior. The new season will be filmed in Phoenix, AZ and Seagal will work as a Deputy under Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County.
Beginning April 4, CBS College Sports Network, under the umbrella of CBS Sports will be rebranded as CBS Sports Network. The revamped network will continue to provide college sports coverage, studio and original programming, though the rebrand will allow for expanded sports content in the future. CBS Sports Network is available in nearly 40 million homes and accessible to more than 94 million households.
Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc., operator of Outdoor Channel purchased MyOutdoorTV.com an online destination focused on hunting, fishing and shooting content. The site joins Outdoor Channel’s cadre of websites aiming at outdoor enthusiasts and it houses a library of 300+ television shows and 8,400 online videos in the outdoor lifestyle genre. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Actor Kenneth Mars, best known for his role in the original movie version of “The Producers” written and directed by Mel Brooks, died last Saturday at his home. He was 75. Mr. Mars also had a role in Brooks’ film “Young Frankenstein” (1974) among other notable movies. Mr. Mars was a prolific television actor with roles in Get Smart, Gunsmoke, Columbo, Murder, She Wrote, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Malcolm in the Middle. He was additionally a voice actor on a variety of cartoon shows. Mr. Mars is survived by two daughters and six grandchildren.
Anime television network, FUNimation Channel now available with standard-def and hi-def programming as part of a subscription level VOD package through television providers in the US, US territories and Canada via Comcast Media Center (CMC). In working with CMC’s VOD distribution, FUNimation Channel will be available to more than 98% of the top TV providers, reaching more than 56 million VOD-enabled households in the US and Canada.
NBC’s The Office is adding a trio of actors for three new roles following Steve Carell’s upcoming exit, cites TVLine. The first to capture one of these roles is former model, now actress Cody Horn (Rescue Me). Horn’s character will join Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton office and become entangled in a hot romance with a longtime staff member. To start, Horn’s role will be recurring though it could grow to be a series regular. The other two roles pending roles include Stanley’s other daughter and a new male staffer in the accounting department.
British actor Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica, Law & Order: UK) will star opposite Stockard Channing on NBC’s pilot 17th Precinct from Ron Moore. The project is an ensemble cop drama with a supernatural twist. Bamber’s will play Caolan, a highly-focused crime scene detective.
Rachel Bilson landed the starring role on The CW’s drama pilot Hart of Dixie, reports THR. Bilson will portray a New York City doctor who moves to a small Southern town full of eccentric people after she inherits a medical practice. Warner Bros. Television is producing along with executive producers Josh Schwartz and Fake Empire’s Stephanie Savage. Leila Gerstein penned the script and will also be an executive producer in addition to Len Goldstein.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX raced to the finish line beating all Saturday night with a 2.3/8 A18-49, according final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s Budweiser Shoot-Out roared into first place at 8p with a 2.3/8 with ABC’s Wipeout rerun next at 1.2/4. FOX held its own ay 9p with the second half of the Budweiser Shoot-Out at a 2.6/9 while CBS’ Crimetime Saturday and Univision’s Sabado Gigante tied for #2 at 0.9/3 each. NBC made it to the top during 10p with a Law & Order: SVU repeat at 1.2/4 and CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery and more of Univision’s Sabado Gigante shared the second spot at 1.0/3 apiece.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis: CBS hit all the right notes Sunday night with an 8.3/22 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 7p, CBS’ 60 Minutes won narrowly with a 2.0/6 with ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos a close second at 1.9/6. From then on, CBS led by a wide berth with the Grammy Awards posting a 9.5/26 at 8p followed by FOX’s The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers averaging a 2.3/6. The Grammy Awards on CBS increased to a 10.9/27 during 9p while FOX’s Family Guy and The Cleveland Show averaged a 2.8/7. Ratings for CBS’ Grammy Awards dipped a bit through 10p though finished way ahead of the pack at 10.5/29 and ABC was a distant second with Brothers & Sisters at 1.7/5.

Monday A18-49 Analysis: CBS had a sweet Monday winning Valentine’s night at 3.4/10 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s House attracted more viewers at 8p with a 3.4/10 followed by CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and the premiere of Mad Love averaging a 3.3/9; Mad Love delivered a stand-alone 3.0/8 at 830p. Two more CBS sitcoms, Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly won at 9p by averaging a 4.0/11 while The Bachelor on ABC flirted with viewers in second place at 3.1/9. Then at 10p, CBS’ Hawaii Five-O did best at 2.8/8 with ABC’s Castle trailing at #2 with a 2.2/7.

Meg LaBorde Kuehn joins Kirkus Media in the newly-minted position of VP/Business Development.
Garrett English advanced to SVP/Executive in Charge, Music Production with MTV. In his new position, Garrett will continue to be the head production executive overseeing the network’s tent pole on-air programs, initiatives and special events. In addition, Garrett will continue in the capacity as one of the Executive Producers for the MTV Movie Awards, MTV Video Music Awards as well as the upcoming mtvU Woodie Awards. Garrett is also the lead strategic manager of production, development, talent, budgeting and negotiation of production talent agreements on behalf of these events. Garrett reports to Richard Gay, EVP/Strategy and Operations, MTV, and is based in New York City.
ITV Studios America welcomes Bruce Robertson as SVP/Creative Strategy. Bruce has worked for ITV Studios UK and International in London since 2004 as Human Resources Director and will relocate to the company’s Los Angeles office. In the States, Bruce will manage new content, brand and creative strategy and business advances for the company in the US though he will continue to work closely with creative directors in the UK and from his former office. Bruce will report directly to Paul Buccieri, CEO, ITV Studios America.
BrandingIron Worldwide (BIW) established a Latin Division named BIW Latin Division and tapped Martha B. Ruiz as Director/Business Development for this new unit. Martha joins from Bunkerhill Magazine where she was Ad Sales Director. In her new role, she will foster Latin partnerships and will be charged with increasing BIW’s roster within the national and international Latin markets. Martha reports to Alejandro Leal, the new Senior Director for the Latin Division. Furthermore, BIW’s general marketing unit named Brandon W. Ross as Director/Business Development to supervise national outreach and business partnerships. Brandon reports to Jorg Wallrabe, President/Owner.
George Callard appointed as SVP/Legal and Business Affairs with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC). George takes on this newly-created role where he will offer legal and business strategy, support and counsel to the in-house group in charge of distributing TWCC’s content through cable, satellite and teleco operators and distributed content partners. Based at TWCC’s Atlanta headquarters, George reports to Jennifer Dangar, EVP/Distribution and Business Development.
WWE tagged Thomas Veit as SVP/Live Events to manage the Live Events department encompassing ticket sales, event marketing and booking. Thomas will report to Stephanie McMahon, EVP/Creative Development and Operations, WWE.
