Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/15/12
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 15, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Aereo, formerly known as Bamboom Labs, has announced $20.5 million Series A financing, led by web holding company IAC. As part of the financing, IAC’s chairman and senior executive Barry Diller, who also announced Aereo’s launch at a press conference in NYC at IAC headquarters, will join the start-up’s Board of Directors. Aereo is developing a DVR and streaming service for the cloud that will enable viewers to watch live-TV on their tablets, smartphones and other internet-connected devices. Aereo produces these devices that hold a wide array of small TV antennas, one per subscriber, each of which can be set-up to deliver broadcast television content over the internet to viewers (think of it in the same vein as Slingbox). At launch, only broadcast stations, such as NBC, ABC, FOX and CBS, are available. For now, the service, which is slated to go live on March 14, is registration-based and will cost $12 a month for the remote DVR and 40 hours of storage. People can register for the service at aereo.com, but first must be New York City residents.
Netflix is prepping its second foray into original programming, after the recently launched Lilyhammer, with Orange is the New Black, a new comedy series from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, reports Bloomberg. The 13-episode series is reportedly based on the memoir of “a communications executive who served time for drug-related charges in a minimum-security women’s prison.” Netflix will have first rights to the series. According to the Bloomberg report, the announcements for this series, as well as Hemlock Grove, a 13-episode horror series from Gaumont International Television, may happen as early as next week.
Time Warner Cable has extended its TWC TV live-streaming app to desktops. It is available now in beta mode to subscribers, and is compatible with PCs and Macs using Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. However, it requires that users have version 4 of Microsoft’s Silverlight plug-in installed on their computers. The app offers a channel guide and enables users to stream some of them, provided that they are inside their home wireless network.
Guidestones, an interactive web series from iThentic, an online video content production and distribution company, and 3 o’clock.tv, a Toronto-based entertainment production company, was launched yesterday. The thriller “delves into the mysterious Guidestones monument in Elbert Country, Georgia,” and was shot in the U.S., Canada and India. There are two versions of the series: the 50-episode “push” version that launched yesterday and a 34-episode “linear” version that the companies say will be released on a major streaming platform this coming spring (the total running time for the series is 120 minutes). The “push” version brings the interactive element to the web series. Viewers who want to participate are allowed to sign-up for an email notification system, which delivers episodes in “real-time” as the narrative unfolds. Each episode contains hidden clues, which viewers can use to search online for hidden videos, audio files, apps and other media, in order to solve the mystery alongside the main characters in the narrative. Be mindful though, the narrative features real and fictitious characters and events, so some of that hidden content may not be “real.”
Rogers Communications and BCE, two of Canada’s largest telecommunications companies, are separately in talks with Apple to be the device-maker’s launch partners for the oft-discussed, upcoming, inevitable next big thing, Apple iTV, according to a report from The Globe and Mail. The report cites sources who say that Apple has approached the two companies as it actively pursues partnerships with carriers. “They’re looking for someone with wireless and broadband capabilities,” says one source to the paper. According to the report, the Apple iTV will be very similar to the iPhone and iPad, and will offer voice and gesture-based controls.
In a related Apple item from the Wall Street Journal, the company is testing out smaller screens for a mini version of the iPad. According to the report, the company has shown screen designs for a smaller version of the tablet to some of its overseas suppliers. One source tells the Journal that the screen resolution will be similar to the iPad 2 (the upcoming iPad 3 is rumored to boast better graphics and a new retina display).
Reese Witherspoon will be participating in a live video chat on iVillage this evening at 7 pm ET. During the interview, the actress will answer questions from fans; discuss her upcoming movie, This Means War; and talk about her life and career. The video chat will be moderated by iVillage’s entertainment editorial director, Serena Kappes. Fans can submit questions on iVillage, Facebook and/or Twitter using the #AskReese hashtag.
nFluence Media, a Seattle and London-based tech start-up, has closed a $3 million Series A round of funding, led by the Alliance of Angels. In conjunction with the investment announcement, the company has also unveiled a new daily deals-type app for iOS: dealBoard, which will be launched later this month. dealBoard differentiates itself from other daily deals services by allowing users to build their own customer profiles, without having to give any private/personal information. Through the start-up’s proprietary “brand sorter” technology, users can build anonymous profiles based on their preferences. That way, according to nFluence, users will only “attract deals, ads, messages and media content that they are interested in at that moment.” This technology is present in the free dealBoard app, where users will receive customized offers, aggregated from nearly all daily deals sources. And it will only be delivered to the app; not your email account or anywhere else where personal information can come into play.
Digital video solutions company Imagine Communications has announced that its ICE Video Platform IPTV transcoder has successfully completed qualification testing for the Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) platform. The test was administered by Tech Mahindra Corp. as part of the Microsoft Mediaroom Interoperability and Qualification Lab (IQ Lab) program, which is intended to enable seamless interoperability and compliance of headend equipment used in Microsoft Mediaroom deployments. The Imagine ICE Video Platform is designed for IPTV service providers who need to deploy with higher picture quality, and then quickly add support for multiple devices such as tablets, smartphones and PCs. It is an “all-in-one solution” that integrates audio and video transcoding with Picture in Picture creation, multi-screen transcoding and multi-format media streaming into the same platform, which Imagine says serves thousands of live-streams to over 20 million North American households.
Great Lake Data Systems (GLDS) has announced that it has been named an Approved Provider for billing, subscriber management and provisioning systems by the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC). The company provides such services for small-to-medium global broadband providers (as in, operators ranging from 2,500 to more than 250,000 subscribers). Through this new relationship, members of the NCTC will have access to GLDS’ WinCable platform, which enables billing and subscriber management, and SuperController solution, which enables automated provisioning for video, voice and data services.
Cisco has published an update to its Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, and the theme is singular: growth. For example, Cisco projects that between 2011 and 2016, global mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold, growing at a compound annual rate of 78%, and mobile network connection speeds will increase by nine-fold within the same timeframe. In fact, by the end of 2012, Cisco expects the number of mobile connected devices to exceed the population of planet Earth, and will reach 10 billion mobile connected devices by 2016. Other interesting projects from the report, which can be read in full here, include:
- Two-thirds of the world’s mobile traffic will be video by 2016.
- Mobile connected tablets will generate as much traffic in 2016 as the entire global mobile network in 2012.
- The average smartphone will generate 2.6 GB of traffic per month in 2016, a 17-fold increase over the 2011 average.
- Africa and the Middle East will have the best mobile data traffic growth with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 104%. It will be followed by Asia Pacific (84%) and Central and Eastern Europe (83%).
- China will surpass 10% of global mobile data traffic in 2016, up from less than 5% in 2011.
A new report from eMarketer, Multichannel Marketing: Making the Most of Multiple Screens, takes a look at how the changes in U.S. media consumption habits have brands redesigning their multiplatform marketing programs. eMarketer cites July 2011 data from Yahoo! and Razorfish, which found that 49% of U.S. mobile device owners used their web-enabled mobile phone daily when watching TV, and a Nielsen study, which discovered that multiplatform ad campaigns generated a 48% lift in brand recall over a simple traditional TV campaign in the instance of an ad about a sports sedan. It has resulted in marketers developing multichannel strategies in order to reach consumers. With that in mind, Lauren Fisher, a writer/analyst for eMarketer, also says brands need to be mindful of the “right mix of channels” that can help them reach and engage consumers. “In the U.S, media penetration and consumer media habits offer insight into which digital channels should be combined with other mass media to drive distinct branding and direct-response objectives.”
Syncapse, a provider of enterprise social media management solutions, has appointed Patrick W. Gross to its Board of Directors, effective immediately. Gross is currently the chairman of The Lovell Group, a D.C.-based private business and technology advisory and investment firm. Syncapse’s current global client roster includes BlackBerry and Nationwide Insurance, among others. In making the announcement, the company’s founder and CEO, Michael Scissons, said the company will be ramping up its expansion efforts and grow its client base in 2012.

Everyone always tells me to read books and magazines and newspapers. And I answer, who reads that anymore? What am I writing, a literature newsletter? Hilarious jokes about the death of the print industry aside; here is a personal favorite of mine that I use prodigiously during my commute: Longform, a great literature website and iPad app (for $4.99). The site posts incredible, in-depth non-fiction articles, both new and old, which are curated from all over the web. It also lets you bookmark them for later enjoyment via Instapaper or Read It Later. I have to thank Longform for letting me discover Gay Talese’s other fine pieces of work that weren’t about DiMaggio (“Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” and “Peter O’Toole on the Ould Sod”). It’s good reading, people. So get to it!
