CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/15/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 15, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Nielsen Media Research will soon begin measuring out of home viewership in college dorms. After a two year pilot program sponsored by several Nielsen clients including Turner Broadcasting, WB, CBS, MTV Networks, Fox and ESPN, Nielsen installed meters in college dorms and then spent a year understanding the impact of the numbers once college dorm viewers were included in the national sample. Part of that research revealed that during the 2004-05 academic year, Nielsen estimates college dorm students watched on average 24.3 hours of television per week. Once added into the national sample, this extended home viewing would likely increase the A18-24 demo by anywhere from 3-12%, or an increase  of 0.2 to 1.0 for an individual program.  No small potatoes.  The new service is scheduled to kick in early next year.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*In a letter signed by Leslie Moonves and Barry Meyer, more than 200 WB, UPN and independent stations were notified on Monday that the new CW network will begin its market by market evaluation to determine which stations it will ask to align with the new network. What the letter did not include were details on its planned reverse compensation plans.

Fox has a new series slated to kick off on March 22 at 930p called Unan1mous.  The set up is simple – put nine people in a bunker and don’t let them out until they vote on which of them should walk away with a check for $1.5 million.  One catch – that cash prize diminishes according to the amount of time they spend deciding.  So this could be a one-time-only special …. or it could drag on for weeks. With that said, each episode will include a elimination of one bunker-mate as a potential recipient of the cash, tho nobody leaves the bunker until the final decision has been made. Unan1mous was created by Lincoln Hiatt and co-created by J.D. Roth and Todd Nelson.

The Turner Broadcasting networks and ABC have picked up the theatrical film King Kong from NBC Universal, with a premiere date set for 2008. The film will go to Turner first and to ABC later the same year, before returning to Turner.  How the film bicycles between Turner’s TBS and TNT remains to be determined. Also included in the Turner package are four other titles from NBC Universal: Doom, Two for the Money, The Ice Harvest and Prime. All but one of these will also start in 2008, while Prime will premiere in 2010 after a Lifetime run.  King Kong premiered on December 14, 2005, and since then has earned $216 million at the domestic box office.  No financial terms were disclosed.

MTV’s My Sweet 16 is scheduled to return with a new season of 7 episodes on April 12.

Bravo’s Outrageous and Contagious: Viral Videos series will debut on February 20 at 10p with the first of six 30-minute episodes.

OLN has announced their international cycling lineup for the upcoming season, which begins on march 5th wtih the Paris-Nice competition, swings thru Italy on March 19 with the Milan San Remo, and continues back to France, then to Belgium, Italy again, and culminating in the Tour de France in early July.  On board to host the network’s coverage will be Phil Liggett, Paul Sherwen and Bob Roll.  Check OLN listings for complete lineup of cycling events.

EchoStar CommunicationsPres/COO Michael Neuman resigned this past Monday.  Stepping up to fulfill Neuman’s job will be Vice Chairman Carl Vogel and Chief Technical Officer Michael Dugan (who is also the former Pres/COO). The news came out in an SEC filing on Tuesday. There has been no official statement from EchoStar.

The third season on BET‘s College Hill will debut on March 2 at 9p, kicking off the season with a 60m premiere.  The show will air regularly thereafter on Thursdays from 9-930p.

NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution will take on the media sales duties for the syndicated series Access Hollywood with the start of the 2006-07 season.  The show is currently in its 10th season.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *MTV has ordered up three new reality series, according to Hollywood Reporter:

  • Tiara Girls is scheduled to debut on April 19 with the first of 8 episodes.  This show follows the day to day life of young women as they prepare for and participate in beauty pageants.
  • MTV Juvies, scheduled to hit the air this summer, follows the lives of first time teen offenders in Illinois from the court room thru their stays at a local juvenile detention center.  MTV has ordered 8 episodes.
  • Two-A-Day is about a real high school football team upon which the entire town has placed its hopes and dreams. The team is from Hoover, Alabama, and cameras follow the town fanaticism as well as the pressures put on the student athletes to fulfill the town’s expectations and hopefully receive college scholarships.

Casting Notes ….

Three from Fox:

  • Signed to the lead role in the drama pilot Vanished is Gale Harold.  The story unfolds over the course of the season, with the investigation following the disappearance of a senator’s wife.
  • In Fox’s comedy project The 12th Man, the network has signed Jodi Lyn O’Keefe to play the role of the assistant basketball coach.  This project was inspired by the life of former NBA basketball player Paul Shirley who spent the majority of his career on the bench.
  • And in the comedy project The Adventures of Big Handsome Guy and is Little Friend, Mircea Monroe and Margo Harshman have joined the lineup.

ABC‘s untitled comedy pilot starring Danny Comden has cast Bonnie Somerville to play opposite Comden. This project is from Warner Bros. TV.

Also from ABC, the drama pilot Men in Trees about a female psychologist who moves to Alaska, fed up with men in general after learning her devoted husband hasn’t been very devoted, has cast Anne Heche as the psychologist suddenly faced with a bevy of single men.

NBC‘s drama project Seeing Red is in the final states of negotiation with Jeff Goldblum to star.  The story is about a cop (Goldblum) who talks to dead people to help solve cases.

CBS drama project Ultra has cast Lena Headey as the single city-dwelling comic book super hero.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Allison Page has been named VP/Primetime Programming for Food Network.  She will oversee the network’s primetime series as well as network programming stunts.

Wayne Goldstein has been upped to VP/New Media Research and Sales Planning at Sony Pictures Television, reporting to Douglas Roth, SVP/Television Research.  Wayne will work directly with the pay TV sales department, and contribute to strategic initiatives and planning in all new media areas, as well as continue to oversee the sales planning area in the research department where he works closely with the sales staff.
