CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
02/15/06
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 15, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
VOD service MovieBeam System re-launched yesterday in 29 US markets including NY, LA, and Chicago. Disney originally launched the short-lived MovieBeam back in 2003, but this time around the service has been set up as its own entity, MovieBeam, Inc., with upwards of $49 million in venture capital backed by investors including Disney, Cisco Systems and Intel Corporation. Key features of the new MovieBeam includes: availability of 100 movies titles, updated weekly, and sent directly to set-top boxes (required $199 for the box). All titles have full length trailers; some titles available in HD. It is a pay-as-you go service with no subscription fees or annual contracts and can be personalized with spending limits and parental controls.
Napster and SunCom Wireless Network, a wireless service provider, has inked a deal making SunCom the first US wireless operator to offer the Napster Mobile music service to its subscribers. Hosted by Ericsson, the Napster Mobile service lets subscribers browse and sample 30-second previews of music from Napster’s library as well as purchase ringtones and full length songs. Once a track is purchased it is simultaneously sent to the user’s mobile phones and home PC. The Napster Mobile service is slated to bow on SunCom during the first half of this year. The SunCom Wireless Network is available in the Southeast US and Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Weinstein Company has picked up the rights to Escape From Planet Earth, a CG-animated comedy movie pitch that will be penned by Tony Leech and Cory Edwards, the duo who write Hoodwinked. Leech will also direct the project and Preston Stutzman of Blue Yonder Films will produce along with Jonathan Shestack, Brian Inerfeld and Gregory R. Little. Mainframe Entertainment, Inc. is on board as the animation studio. Escape from Planet Earth, follows the story of a prison break where the prison is actually Area 51. Alien mayhem no doubt ensues.
John Schwartzman is set to direct his first movie titled Carlisle School, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie is the true story of a college football team comprised of American Indian males who attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a Pennsylvania boarding school where American Indian males were educated from childhood thru college during the period 1879-1918. The not-so-great football team is coached by Jim Thorpe prior to winning his Olympic gold medal, and they collectively overcome all manner of adversity to go on to become a strong team.
The N will launch season two (six new episodes) of the animated comedy series O’Grady on Friday, March 3, at 9p. The premiere episode features special guests, talk show host Conan O’Brien and Amy Poehler from SNL. Additional special guest appearances in the new episodes include Arrested Development’s Will Arnett and David Cross, SNL’s Rachel Dratch, The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry and comedian Sam Seder. At the conclusion of each episode, viewers will be able to log on to www.the-n.com and watch series outtakes, extras and re-watch the entire episode. The series airs regularly on Monday nights at 9p.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Beginning February 20, Canada’s Teletoon network will air three English language PSAs created by kids ages 9 to 12, under the umbrella title The Environment, Cooperation and Self-Esteem. The kids developed and produced the PSAs in August 2005 during Camp Teletoon, a three-week event that is part of a community-based partnership between Arts Umbrella (in Vancouver), Teletoon, and Vancouver’s Studio B Productions. During the session the kids were asked to animate what was on their minds with the guidance of professional animators.
Abandon Mobile, in an exclusive partnership with NBC Sports, has released two new NBC Sports wireless game titles: Bode Miller Alpine Racing and NBC Sports Figure Skating. Both titles are branded and are supported by NBC Sports, and the games are available for download to Cingular Wireless, Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless customers. Additional NBC Sports-branded mobile games set for release in 2006 include NBC Sports Heads-Up Poker and NBC Sports Real Golf mobile games.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Jazwares, Inc. introduces a line of plush toys based on characters from the preschool series Mustard Pancakes. The toy line will begin rolling-out at retail this spring, and follows the recent release of a program DVD and CD, the latter of which features music from the show composed/performed by its star Courtney Campbell. Distributed by American Public Television, Mustard Pancakes is seen in 181+ markets.
Planetwide Games, Inc., a video game and application software provider, has entered into a multi-year licensing agreement with the National Geographic Society to integrate NGS’ content into its line of self-publishing software. Launching first will be National Geographic Comic Book Creator, a series of interactive edutainment titles with versions targeted separate groups: kids, teens and adults. In addition to general learning activities each version of the Comic Book Creator will allow users to create their own documentaries based on their own experiences and travels and of course using their own photos and clip-art in a scrapbook style diary format and comic book series.
STONE SOUP
Atari, Inc.’s controversial new game Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is in the mail and heading to retailers. Developed by The Collective, Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is rated ‘M’ for Mature and is available for the PS2, Xbox and Windows. You may recall that last summer NY City Council Member, Peter F. Vallone, sent a letter to Atari’s Chairman/CEO to voice his concern over the content of the game believing that it would be a potential how-to manual for would-be graffitists. Vallone who had not seen any content of the game also went to court to prevent a party for the launch of the game to be held in NYC. A Judge rejected the argument. The game features an extensive voice cast and music soundtrack as well as the work by a 66+ graffiti artists. This past December MTV Films acquired the feature films rights to Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Mark D. Ketchum has been appointed President/CEO, Newell Rubbermaid Inc. He will continue as a member of the Newell Rubbermaid Board. Ketchum (56) spent 33 years with Procter & Gamble serving in various roles including as President/Global Baby and Family Care, under his leadership in that role he is credited with the global repositioning and turnaround of the Pampers brand. Ketchum retired from P&G in November, 2004. Newell Rubbermaid Inc., is a marketer of consumer and commercial products for a range of brands including kid friendly ones such as Graco, Goody and Rubbermaid to name a few.
