Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 5, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Whether it was Giants/Redskins or RG3/Eli, ESPN’s coverage of the MNF game took the night among all television programs on broadcast or cable in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos with a 10.2 US household rating for an average of over 16.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen. In Washington D.C., the game delivered a 20.9 rating on ESPN and a 10.3 rating on WDCA-IND, for a combined 31.2 rating in the market. In New York, the game delivered an 11.9 rating on ESPN and a 6.9 rating on WWOR-IND, for a combined 18.8 rating in the market. Through 13 weeks of NFL action, MNF is averaging an 8.4 score with 13.1 million viewers.

On the Air

ESPN2’s anchor show SportsNation will get some new blood and a new home in the New Year. The series will move to LA and co-host Charissa Thompson will now be joined by Marcellus Wiley to host the program. Current co-host Colin Cowherd will remain on the east coast where he will focus on his nationally syndicated radio show. Marcellus Wiley joined ESPN in 2007 primarily as a studio analyst on ESPN2’s First Take.

With seven of the top ten teams in the final BCS standings, CBS Sports reports that its national coverage of the SEC on CBS for the 2012 season ranked as the highest-rated regular-season college football package on any network for the fourth consecutive season. The package averaged a preliminary national household rating/share of 3.9/9, ahead of second place ABC’s season average of 3.2/7 for the sport this year. CBS’ score was anchored, of course, by the SEC Championship Game featuring Alabama/Georgia which drew a 9.8/20 with 16.2 million viewers.

ESPN Deportes will showcase all five of the BCS games this year, marking the first time the five-game series will be offered in Spanish. The BCS games will air live on ESPN Deportes, starting Jan. 1 with the Rose Bowl Presented by VIZIO and the Discover Orange Bowl at 5p and 8:30p, respectively. The Allstate Sugar Bowl follows on Jan. 2 at 8:30p and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Jan. 3 at 8:30p. The Discover BCS National Championship game will air for the second time on the network on Jan. 7, at 8:30p.

On Sunday, December 2, Univision’s coverage of the second leg of the Liga MX final match between Toluca and Tijuana drew in an average of 2.9 million total viewers and 1.6 million adults 18-49. The match also delivered a record performance out of all Liga MX games in 2012 among adults 18-49 and total viewers. Meanwhile, Saturday’s coverage of the MLS Cup on TeleFutura easily bested viewership over the 2011 match with 485,000 total viewers for a spike of 58%.

Saturday night’s Showtime Championship Boxing telecast pitting Miguel Cotto/Austin Trout on Showtime drew record viewership for boxing on the premium network. The three-fight telecast drew an average audience of 1.047 million viewers, marking the highest since 2004 when Nielsen began to separately measure premium television multiplex channels.

HBO Sports heads to this weekend’s Manny Pacquiao/Juan Manuel Marquez fight with the finale of 24/7 Pacquiao/Marquez on Friday night at 8p. The first three episodes of the behind-the-scenes series will run immediately beforehand beginning at 6:30p.

SPEED announced 16 racers from 13 different series who have been nominated for the seventh annual presentation of the Mario Andretti Trophy as the SPEED Performer of the Year. The year’s nominees include: Sebastian Vettel (F1), Fernando Alonso (F1), Brad Keselowski (NASCAR), Jorge Lorenzo (MotoGP), Casey Stoner (MotoGP), Ryan Hunter-Reay (IndyCar), Antron Brown (NHRA), Kyle Larson (USAC), Sammy Swindell (WoO), Sebastien Loeb (World Rally), Andre Lotterer (WEC), Max Biaggi (World Superbike), Scott Pruett (Grand-Am), Donny Schatz (WoO), Josh Hayes (AMA Pro Superbike) and Ryan Villopoto (Supercross). The channel will present the trophy  as part of a SPEED Center special January 27.

This month, FOX Deportes and UFC are on deck to offer four live UFC events, an original three part series and the preliminary fights ahead of the heavyweight rematch between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 on Dec. 29. Highlights on the channel include UFC on FOX 5 on Saturday, UFC on FX 6 on Dec. 14 as well as The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finales.

NBC Sports Network will carry Fight Night 36: Bryant Jennings on Thursday at 10p. The special will feature 36 hours in the life of undefeated heavyweight Bryant Jennings as he prepares to face Bowie Tupou in a voluntary defense of his USBA Heavyweight Title.  Jennings Fight Night match with Tupou will then air Saturday, December 8 at 10p on NBC Sports Network. Kenny Rice will serve as the play-by-play commentator for the telecast, and will be joined by Hall-of-Fame boxing trainer Freddie Roach and cruiserweight contender B.J. Flores.

1.2 billion people may not be represented at the next Olympic Games. The IOC suspended the Indian Olympic Association yesterday for chronic violations of the Olympic charter. The IOC does not allow a country’s sports leaders from serving after the age of 70 or for serving for more than eight years, something multiple officials in the country have violated, according to reports. Until sanctions are lifted, Indian athletes are not allowed to compete under the country’s flag in Olympic events.

Ford is prepping a Super Bowl campaign for its Lincoln brand and will be utilizing Jimmy Fallon and Twitter to forge the first ad. The promotion will reportedly involve Fallon taking tweets and turning it into a 60-second commercial that will air during the game.

Indycar locked in a deal with Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka to serve as the major sponsor for the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series Triple Crown, which consists of the Indianapolis 500, Pocono INDYCAR 400 and the MAVTV 500. Under the moniker Fuzzy’s Triple Crown, the three-race oval track set will award a $1 million payout to any driver who can win all three prestigious events. A driver that wins two of the three races will be awarded a $250,000 bonus from the brand.

There will be a new NASCAR team in the sport’s Sprint Cup Series, with the entry of Swan Racing. The team will be led by team owner Brandon Davis and feature the No. 30 Toyota driven by David Stremme for the full season. Davis is CEO of independent oil and gas company Swan Energy Inc., who will of course be sponsoring the car as well.

Digital Fields

NCAA.com, which is managed by Turner Sports, showed a spike in video views during the site’s weekend coverage of the 2012 NCAA fall championships. Spanning Thursday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 2, NCAA.com drew a 58% bump in video views for its coverage of Division I women’s volleyball, Division II and III men’s and women’s soccer and national collegiate men’s water polo. In addition, NCAA.com delivered a14% rise in average daily uniques and page visits, according to Omniture. The site’s live streaming coverage of the NCAA fall championships will continue Thursday, Dec. 6, at 1p with Division II women’s volleyball quarterfinals.

A new study on NFL teams by social benchmarking company Unmetric shows that the Dallas Cowboys lead the league in digital followers with 5.5 million on Facebook and Twitter, according to Mashable. The New York Jets are ahead of the pack in Twitter followers, breaking the 500,000 mark. Biggest growth went to the Seahawks with a 20.7% rise in Facebook. The Bears are winners in fan engagement while the Bills sent out the most Tweets per day. However, the study noted that 80% of teams still do not reply to fan posts on the social media platforms.
