Prior to the third season premiere of Downton Abbey, PBS will air a special program, Secrets of Highclere Castle, part of an ongoing series by Pioneer Productions that looks at life in stately British homes and where much of Downton Abbey is filmed.  The program airs January 6 at 8p followed by MASTERPIECE CLASSIC Downton Abbey, Season 3 at 9p on PBS (check local listings).

ABC released its midseason premiere dates for new dramas and comedies along with returning series:
          January 22: The Taste (two-hour series premiere) at 8p

A new reality matchmaking series makes its way to VH1 when Making Mr. Right premieres January 6 at 9p.  The series will determine how far three women will go to find true love.  The women do get help from veteran matchmaker April Beyer.  The eight-episode series is produced by High Noon Entertainment. 

TV One has a new original scripted series on the docket titled Belle’s, a comedy about widower William “Big Bill” Cooper who owns and operates his family’s upscale soul food restaurant.  The series debuts January 21 at 10p with the first of six episodes.  The half-hour series was co-created by producer Ed Weinberger and stars Keith David, Elise Neal, Tami Roman, Ella Joyce and Miguel Nunez as well as newcomer Nadja Alaya.  Nunez also serves as co-creator and EP along with Weinberger.  Oscar Turner also is an EP for Gallery Road Productions and Jubba Seyyid for TV One.

An around the world culinary series bows in early January on Cooking Channel when Taste in Translation premieres January 4 at 9p.  Starring host Aarti Sequeira the original series explores the different ways a country celebrates a holiday and special events through food.  Leopard Films produces the series.

FX has set the premiere date of its period spy drama The Americans for January 30 at 10p.  The Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys who are KGB spies involved in a complex marriage while posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C. soon after Ronald Reagan is elected president.

A second season of Supernanny: Family Lockdown featuring America’s Supernanny Deborah Tillman is back on Lifetime starting January 8 at 10p.  Each episode, Tillman will live with families for one week during which she will experience first-hand the challenges and issues facing each family.  The series is from Shed Media US. 

Long-running series Say Yes to the Dress returns to TLC for a ninth season on December 28 at 9p while new episodes of Say Yes to the Dress: Randy Knows Best launch on January 4 at 10p.   In the opening episode of season nine, Joan Rivers joins a friend looking for the perfect dress.  Say Yes to the Dress is produced by Halfyard Productions for TLC.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC ordered a script for a half-hour, single-camera comedy titled Rookie from Will Gluck.  The project centers on a 20-something woman who is trying to reinvent herself by becoming a cop.  Andy Bobrow will write the script and serve as EP which is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Gluck’s studio-based Olive Bridge Entertainment.   Gluck will be a non-writing EP, with Olive Bridge’s Richie Schwartz on board as a co-EP.  Tosh.0’s Scott Zabielski will consult on the project.

Justin Bruening (The Ringer) is joining the cast of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy during season nine in the recurring role as a paramedic named Matt and a potential love interest for one of the doctors.  He will first appear in January or early February. 

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

A+E Networks will take over full ownership of AETN All Asia Networks, the Singapore-based company established as a joint venture with Astro Overseas Limited (AOL) in 2007.  This move comes at a time when A+E Networks will expand its footprint and launch new brands in the region including Lifetime.  A+E Networks’ channel brands include HISTORY, Crime & Investigation Network and BIO and will continue to have carriage in Malaysia and Brunei through deals with Astro Malaysia, an affiliate of AOL.  A+E Networks and AOL will additionally establish a regional production partnership designed to encourage production activity across South East Asia. 

On the heels of the news that Kate, Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant, Electric Sky reports it has secured many sales for the ITN production of Wills & Kate: Baby Fever.  The 45-minute documentary was picked up by a large broadcaster in Germany as well as MTV Media Finland, VMMA in Belgium, CBC News Network in Canada, Sky Network Television in New Zealand, M6 in France and also Discovery Fit & Health in the US.  Electric Sky also is representing the one-hour documentary The Royal Paintbox which features HRH The Prince of Wales as he demonstrates and investigates the tradition of painting which runs through the Royal Family.

Pilot Productions producer of travel and adventure factual programming has secured sales in several territories.  Globe Trekker: Round the World Series (8 eps/52m) was picked up by Greek public broadcaster ERT and also licensed to Thai pubcaster Thai PBS.  Both companies also secured season 16 of the series Globe Trekker (13 eps/52m).  In addition, Wealth TV has licensed Ottomans vs. Christians: Battle for the Mediterranean (6 eps/26m), Historic Walks (3 eps/26m) and Metropolis (4 eps/26m).  Public broadcaster RTV in Slovenia also picked up Ottomans vs. Christians: Battle for the Mediterranean.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX scored a win Saturday among A18-49 at 1.7/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX’s Big Ten Football Pre-Game and the start of the Game won at an average of 1.6/5 with ABC’s Saturday Night Football in second at 1.3/4.  FOX topped again at 9p with more of the Big Ten Championship Game at 1.9/6 with ABC’s Texas at Kansas State game next at 1.4/5.  Both networks went head-to-head during 10p though ABC’s Saturday Night Football match prevailed at 1.7/5 followed closely by FOX’s Big Ten Championship at 1.6/5.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  Week to week NBC delivered nearly the same Sunday night ratings for the A18-49 viewers at 6.4/16, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 7p, CBS’ 60 Minutes overall did best at 3.8/10 followed by NBC’s Football Night in America Part 2 at 2.2/6.  NBC ruled at 8p with a combo of Football Night in America Part 3 and the start of the Sunday Night Football game at 5.3/13 and ABC’s Once Upon a Time came in second with a 3.1/8.  NBC dominated the 9p hour with more of the Sunday Night Football game at 7.3/17 while ABC’s Revenge was next at 2.4/5.  NBC polished the last win of the night during 10p on an upswing as Sunday Night Football posted a 7.8/19 and CBS’ The Good Wife and The Mentalist encore averaged a 1.6/4 in second place.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  With a crescendo, NBC took the top spot among A18-49 viewers on Monday at 3.5/9, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s The Voice won at 8p with a 3.7/10 followed by CBS’ sitcoms How I Met Your Mother and a repeat of 2 Broke Girls at an average of 2.7/8.  At 9p, NBC remained in first place with The Voice at 4.2/10 and more comedies on CBS came next as new episodes of 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly delivered an average of 3.3/9.  NBC kept a steady #1 beat through 10p as the Blake Shelton Not So Family Christmas Special posted a 2.7/7 with CBS’ Hawaii Five-O in a solid #2 position with 2.3/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Jennifer Dangar was appointed President/Distribution and Business Development at The Weather Company.  In addition, Cameron Clayton was named President/Digital Division.  Both are based at Weather’s Atlanta headquarters and will report to David Kenny, Chairman/CEO.  Jennifer will continue to identify new opportunities for growth and expand relationship with distribution partners across all platforms.  Cameron will lead Weather’s digital division and will oversee all teams in charge of weather.com, wunderground.com, intellicast.com, mobile and digital apps, interactive television and more.

Robert Weiss was named Chief Creative Officer of Ovation and will be based at the network’s Santa Monica headquarters.  Robert will be responsible of the network’s strategic direction and creative vision as well as branding for all media platforms.  He will report to CEO Charles Segars. 

Rob Shaftel has become SVP/Development (East Coast) at ITV Studios America.  Rob will be based in ITV Studio America’s New York office and will develop new programming for the US broadcast and cable markets to support the company’s continued growth plans.  He will report to Bruce Robertson, Head/Development. 

Young Broadcasting, LLC hired veteran television management executive Viki Regan for its ABC affiliate, WRIC-TV in Richmond, VA as VP/GM.  Viki’s new position began this week and she reports to Young Broadcasting President Deb McDermott.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN)  the Americas tapped Maria Badillo as VP/Programming and Production at Tr3s.  In her new role, Maria will head the company’s programming strategies and original production across the US Hispanic network’s content platforms. 

Independent studio Entertainment One Reality (eOne) hired Jeff Hevert as VP/Current Programming and Development, Alternative Programming US eOne Reality.  Based in Los Angles, Jeff will head the development of new series as well as current programming.  He reports jointly to John Morayniss, CEO, eOne Television and Tara Long, SVP/US Alternative Programming.

Mance Media tagged Brian Conlon to become the company’s new VP/Worldwide Acquisitions.  In another move, Mance Media announced it has moved its corporate headquarters to Sunset Gower Studios.  Brian joins Mance Media from Halogen TV where he was an acquisitions executive and played a key role in the network’s launch. 

Boutique distribution company Looking Glass International has opened a new office in Beijing and Karen Lee will head the office and manage all activities in the region in addition to Middle East and Central Eastern Europe.  Karen previously was with China’s LIC.

Entertainment marketing and creative agency BIG SMACK added Kevin Lahr as Executive Producer/Director of Production.  Prior to this appointment, Kevin was with Discovery Communications for five-plus years working for Discovery Channel, Science Channel and Investigation Discovery.
