12/20/06

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, December 20, 2006 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC has a new late night series kicking off on January 2 at 2:05am – Poker After Dark with host Shana Hiatt.  The 60-minute nightly show from Poker Prods airs Monday thru Saturday, and features six professional poker players all looking to pick up the $120,000 first place cash prize.  During the course of the week, the show will follow the action at different poker tables, until ultimately on Friday night there is a winner. Saturday night show, which airs following SNL at 1am ET, is listed as the Director’s Cut with the host and that week’s winner recapping the week’s strategies.

(details below)

ESPN signs a 5-year agreement with the Arena Football League (AFL) that will begin with the 2007 season, a change as NBC has been the league’s carrier for the past 3 years.  As part of the deal, 17 regular season and 9 postseason games will air on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC with ESPN2 carrying Monday primetime games from March 12 through June 25.  ESPN also picked up a minority AFL ownership stake in the league and national broadcast rights for an undisclosed amount.

New information from Nielsen Media Research from its third quarter 2006 Home Technology Report: more U.S. households now own DVD players at 81.2% vs VCRs at 79.2%. At the end of third quarter 2006, DVD penetration increased by 6% in the U.S. from the previous year and this figure continues to grow, while VCR penetration has started to slip. Just seven years ago in 1999, when Nielsen started to track DVD ownership, the DVD penetration was at 6.7% and VCR penetration at 88.6%. Other findings include: 73.4% of U.S. homes own a computer are more likely to do so if children or teens are present in the household; 95.4% of people with Internet access go online at least once a week and 37.3% go online more than once a day; 26.7% of U.S. homes own or rent an MP3 player; and 16.4% of US homes own a PDA.

As part of its goal to sell around $450 million of non-core assets, Tribune Company has finalized the sale of WLVI/Boston to Sunbeam Television Corp. for $113.7 million in cash. Additionally, Tribune had completed the sale of WCWN/Albany earlier this month.

~ BROADBAND AND DIGITAL ~

Comcast’s new user-generated site, Ziddio, and independent production company Endemol, are teaming to offer amateur video producers the opportunity to submit creative ideas for a television show through a contest called Ten Day Take. The winning program idea will be sent to Hollywood, receive a $50,000 production budget and have access to Endemol’s production outlets. Then, the pilot and the shoot, completed within ten days, will be edited into a reality series and be available on Ziddio and on TV via Comcast’s ON DEMAND service.

A three-way partnership has formed between NBC Universal, Broadway Video Entertainment and Cingular Wireless to launch Saturday Night Live Mobile. Cingular Video customers will have exclusive access to more than 100 SNL video shorts from classic and current episodes, and new original shorts produced for Cingular Video. Cingular users can also purchase and download SNL ringtones and wallpaper graphics.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

Ghost House Television, the television production unit that specializes in scary content, has added former Tribune and Universal executive William Hamm to head the division. The first scripted project for the unit will be a miniseries adaptation of Dean Koontz’ novel The Taking with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert as Executive Producers. Larry Block will Co-Executive Produce the project. The team is looking for a writer to adapt the Koontz novel and will pitch it to the networks early in 2007. The group’s first unscripted project will be a haunted house reality show currently in progress at The CW and expected to begin production early next spring.

CBS has cast Janeane Garofalo in an untitled drama project from Scott Free Prods and CBS Paramount Network TV, about the work and personal lives of people in the Public Defenders Office, as the head of that office, says Hollywood Reporter.

CBS also has two new projects in the development hopper – Demons from Barbara Hall and Joe Roth and CBS Paramount Network TV is about an ex-priest who now performs exorcisms. The second project, also from CBS Paramount Network TV, is called Swingtown about suburban couples in the 1970’s who are swingers.

FX has cast Rose Byrne in their legal drama project, also untitled, that stars Glenn Close, and is from FX Prods and Sony Pictures TV.  Byrne plays a lawyer who has just entered the profession, working for Glenn Close whose character is a well known trial attorney, per Hollywood Reporter.  Also added to the cast is Tate Donovan as Close’s most senior and most trusted associate in the lawfirm.

The History Channel Presents this day in History:
1989 – The United States launches an invasion of Panama to remove its leader Manuel Noriega, a steadfast ally of US anticommunist efforts in Central America and indicted drug trafficker and money launderer.  The fighting was brief, although it cost the lives of 23 U.S. soldiers, three U.S. civilians, 150 Panamanian soldiers, and an estimated 500 Panamanian civilians.  Noriega fled to the residence of the papal representative in Panama and surrendered to DEA agents in early January.  He was the first foreign head of state to be tried and convicted in a U.S. court and is currently serving a 40-year sentence in federal prison.
