USA Network: Psych at 10p
ABC News announced Christiane Amanpour anchor of This Week will take on a new role within the ABC News division as the Global Affairs anchor across all platforms effective immediately. Amanpour will focus on foreign affairs reporting for ABC in primetime specials and for the network’s news broadcasts. Beginning January 8, George Stephanopoulos will take on the dual role as anchor of This Week in addition to his current role as anchor on Good Morning America. In addition to remaining at ABC News, Amanpour will host a weekday show on CNN International. Jim Walton, President of CNN Worldwide issued this statement regarding Amanpour’s new role: “Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years. We could not be happier that through this unique arrangement with ABC News her experience and global perspective are returning to a nightly news broadcast for our international audience.”
Yesterday, the FCC passed rules that would lower the volume on television commercials. The new rules are part of the legislation passed in 2010 and signed by President Obama called the CALM Act (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation). The rules will go into effect on December 13, 2012 and will charge television stations, cable operators and others to keep the volume on both local and national ads to the same level as the program surrounding it.
On New Year’s Day, FUEL TV, the entertainment and sports network from FOX Sports Media Group, launches the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with a 24-hour marathon featuring five show premieres beginning at 12a. For the coming New Year, FUEL TV will serve up more than 2,000 hours of UFC programming with 100+ hours of live fights, weigh-ins, preliminary matches and pre- and post-fight shows. Also on January 3, FUEL TV premieres UFC Tonight at 10p, the network’s official news and information program of the UFC hosted by Todd Harris.
Nat Geo WILD heads to Philadelphia for a new six-episode series Philly Undercover which goes inside the illegal dogfighting sport. The series embeds with the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) with an undercover police team charged with eliminating dogfighting and protecting animals from abuse and neglect. The series will premiere January 7 at 10p following the season premiere of Dog Whisperer. Philly Undercover will then move to its regular time slot of Mondays at 9p starting January 9. ITV Studios Limited produces the series for National Geographic Channels.
Comedy series The League was granted a fourth season renewal by FX. The network ordered 13 episodes from FX Productions. Presently in its third season, The League is averaging 1.7 million total viewers and 1.5 million with A18-49.
Season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race launches on Logo with a 90-minute premiere episode January 30 at 9p. Thirteen drag queens compete for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” while a slew of celebrities appear as guest judges including Elvira, Jennifer Tilly, Natalie Cole, Rick Fox and many more. On the same night, Logo will also debut a new season of its behind-the-scenes show Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race at 1030p. World of Wonder Productions is behind both series.
Soon after Valentine’s Day, E! brings back new second seasons of its half-hour series Khloe & Lamar and Ice Loves Coco. Twelve new episodes of Khloe & Lamar and ten new episodes of Ice Loves Coco premiere February 19 at 10p and 1030p respectively. Khloe & Lamar is produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions while Ice Loves Coco is created and produced by Comcast Entertainment Studios.
This past Sunday, HBO aired the season finale of Boardwalk Empire which tallied a season high of 3.0 million total viewers at 9p and another 834,000 for the 11p encore airing for a combined audience of 3.8 million for the night. HBO additionally aired a preview of new series LUCK which brought in an average of 1.1 million viewers at 10p. LUCK will premiere January 29.

BBC is working in the US with Comcast’s Xfinity TV to launch BBC’s 24-hour international news channel, BBC World News in major markets. At the end of this year, BBC World News will be available in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, Indianapolis and Portland in addition to Northern California, Michigan and Western New England. More Comcast markets will pick up BBC World News in 2012. By the end of 2012, BBC World News is expected to be in close to 15 million US homes.
Production is underway in Los Angeles for Univision’s new weekly weight loss competition series Dale con Ganas (Give It Your All). The 12-episode series will be hosted by Alfonso “Poncho” de Anda, the network’s co-host of its morning show Despierta America (Wake-Up America). Dale con Ganas is co-produced by Broome’s 25/7 Productions and Estefan Film and Television Productions in association with Univision Studios. The show goes beyond the competition format and presents a real-life family novela where four families, each with four members will represent different Hispanic heritages from Mexican, Colombian and Peruvian. The common factor in all four families is they are overweight. At the end of twelve weeks, the show will air an in-studio, live-to-tape finale where one family will win the grand prize of $100,000.
Mark Moses landed a multi-episode run on AMC’s The Killing, reports THR. Moses will join the series’ second season playing Lt. Carlson, a new detective at the Seattle police department.
Casting Call: A seventh season of MTV’s Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) is searching nationwide to find hip-hop dance crews of five to seven participants ready to hit the ABDC stage. The season is set to premiere on MTV next spring. Auditions will take place in Chicago on January 13; Houston on January 15; New York on January 21; and Los Angeles on January 28. Saturday A18-49 Analysis: CBS “glowed” in first place Saturday with a 1.4/4 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, the holiday classic Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer on CBS won with a 1.6/5 followed by double Cops episodes on FOX at an average of 1.3/4. CBS picked up another win at 9p with Flight Before Christmas at 1.2/4 and the ABC News Republican Debate on ABC was a close second at 1.1/4. ABC then scored the final win of the night with the second hour of the Republican Debate in Iowa at 1.4/5 and CBS moved back a step with 48 Hours Mystery at #2 with 1.3/4.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis: NBC blazed a wide path Sunday night winning with an 8.2/20 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ 60 Minutes did best at 3.2/8 and NBC’s Football Night in America Part 2 was next at 3.0/8. NBC jumped to an average of 6.7/17 during 8p for a combination of Football Night in America Part 3 and the start of the NY Giants at Dallas NFL game followed by CBS at 3.2/8, the average of 60 Minutes and The Amazing Race. NBC surged to a 9.6/22 at 9p for more of the Sunday Night Football match while FOX with Family Guy and American Dad averaged a 2.8/7 in second place. NBC held its own through 10p as the Sunday Night Football game scored a 9.2/22 and CBS placed second at an average of 2.1/6 for The Good Wife and CSI: Miami.

Scripps Networks Interactive tapped Jim Samples as President/International. Most recently, Jim served as President of HGTV and he will now provide oversight of the company’s burgeoning international programming offerings. He will report to Joseph G. NeCastro, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. In this position, Jim succeeds Grey Moyer who will remain with the company as a consultant to the international group. Furthermore, Bob Baskerville was promoted to COO/International up from GM to head all daily operations of the company’s global businesses.
ABC Sales elevated four within its precincts: Doug Hochstadt, David Mayber and Tom Watson will all take on new roles as SVPs/ABC Sales and Marco Forte was upped to VP. Specifically, Doug will become SVP/Planning and Proposals; David as SVP/Central Division; Tom as SVP/Team Leader; and Marco as VP/Primetime Sales.
Philadelphia-based Red Tettemer + Partners hired four new executives: Kelly Goldenberg will become Media Director in charge of traditional media planning and buying on behalf of all clients; John Cruz was tagged as Senior Designer; Susan Schneider is the agency’s new Art Director to head concept, art direction and design; and Tim Londergan was added as Senior Account Manager reporting to agency partners Jared Scott and Carla Mote.
