Cynopsis: Kids!
12/13/06
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Nickelodeon has given the go ahead on a new animated series called Mighty B (20 episodes), from SNL’s Amy Poehler and Cynthia True and Erik Wiese. Mighty B revolves around Bessie Higgenbottom, a 10-year-old Honeybee scout. Poehler will lend her voice to Bessie and will serve as Executive Producer of the series.
And not to bury the lead on a couple of Nickelodeon favorites, the network has given the green light to a 6th of SpongeBob SquarePants and more episodes of Nicktoons series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and Tak and the Power of Juju.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Hoobledoop shoobahoobs and doobahoobs, which loosely translated from Hooby (okay directly translated) means, “Hello girls and boys.” Don’t be fooled – soon everyone will be speaking Hooby when Jim Henson’s The Hoobs makes its US TV premiere on PBS KIDS Sprout on December 25, in a Happy Hooby Holidays marathon from 12n-6p. The preschool series will settle into its regular daily 2p time period beginning December 26. Created by The Jim Henson Company and licensed by HIT Entertainment, The Hoobs was originally commissioned by Channel 4 (UK) where it launched in 2000. The show continues to air regularly in the UK, where the series has become a cult favorite. Hoobletoodledoo, which is to say, goodbye. I know what you’re thinking – and the answer is no, I’m not fluent in Hooby. In fact that is about as far as my high school Hooby will take me.
Program Partners has cleared the syndicated strip series Degrassi: The Next Generation in 60+% of the US, where the tween/teen targeted series will debut in Fall 2007. Degrassi: The Next Generation, which currently airs in the US on The N, has been picked up in many of the top US markets, anchored by a Tribune Broadcasting group-wide commitment as well as clearances on stations within the Belo, Clear Channel, Granite, Gray, Hubbard, and Pegasus groups and The CW PLUS stations. Stations may use this show as time toward their FCC required three-hour kids programming minimum. Degrassi was launched in Canada 25 years ago by Executive Produced and Co-Created by Linda Schuyler, with the first chapter, Degrassi Jr. High. The series is now produced by Epitome Pictures. Program Partners is marketing the current chapter in the Degrassi series as an outgrowth of its overall distribution deal with Thunderbird Films. As you may have heard me mentioned before, the Degrassi franchise has a huge following of all age groups, including adults (male and female), and is one of my personal favorites.
The N will launch Teens Everywhere, a wireless research panel of 10,000 teens, in January 2007. The N will communicate with panel members via cellphone to get quick feedback on timely questions and information about network programming, advertising events, or their lifestyles and learn about the group’s wireless content sharing habits and viral behavior. The N developed Teens Everywhere with OTX, an online research group, and mbuzzy, a mobile social network provider.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Looking to expand the reach of its properties, DIC Entertainment has entered into a North American distribution deal with Alliance Entertainment Corporation. Under the multi-year deal AEC will make available a selection of DIC’s animated and live-action titles to brick and mortar retailers, and has the non-exclusive digital rights to deliver content via digital streaming and downloads to computers and mobile devices. AEC will have a first-look option to distribute newly-produced TV shows for KOL’s Secret Slumber Party programming block on CBS, including Horseland. The company will also have the option to distribute direct-to-video properties, such as The Secret Millionaire’s Club, as well as shows from DIC’s library. Kicking off in 1Q 2007, AEC will market and distribute the properties to mass market and specialty retailers, which includes national and regional supermarket and drug store chains.
Ubisoft releases Star Wars Lethal Alliance for Nintendo DS in North America this week, following the game’s debut last week for Sony’s PSP. The game takes place in the time between Episodes III and IV. Star Wars Lethal Alliance carries an ESRB rating of E10+.
Six Flags, Inc. has unveiled more new entertainment and marketing plans for 2007. The entertainment parks has entered into several new and expanded deals including: HIT Entertainment to build a Thomas & Friends themed playlands areas and characters; expanding its deal with Tony Hawk with the introduction of two Hawk-themed spinning coasters and more Hawk rides added over the next few years; MTV’s mtvU will host and market branded concerts in five parks beginning summer 2007. Six Flags has also inked a multi-year deal with Cold Stone Creamery to open its stores at branded parks and a new Six Flags ice cream flavor. And lastly, under a new multi-year deal, Heinz will be the official ketchup of Six Flags parks. Earlier this week it was announced Six Flags had signed a deal to bring The Wiggles to some of its parks and create Wiggles World play areas.
