FCC commissioners voted yesterday 4-to-1 to approve the Comcast alliance with NBC Universal valued at $30 billion. The lone dissenting vote came from Commissioner Michael Copps. Following the FCC’s endorsement, the Justice Department granted its approval. The FCC’s consent comes with many conditions though, including access to broadcast, cable and online content as well as network neutrality conditions. The deal creates an entity where Comcast will hold the majority stake at 51% that mingles all of NBCU’s media content with most of Comcast’s while Comcast will retain full control of its cable and online assets. Over the next three to seven years, Comcast further has the option of buying out NBCU parent company GE’s 49% stake in the joint venture. Besides FCC Commissioner Copps, the Writers Guild of America, East released a statement Tuesday revealing its disapproval to the FCC’s authorization of the Comcast-NBCU joint venture. Their statement reads in part:
NBC made a change in its primetime schedule opting to take Law & Order: Los Angeles (LOLA) off the lineup following the recent casting eliminations of series regulars Skeet Ulrich, Megan Boone and Regina Hall because of creative differences. As a result, NBC will keep Parenthood in its current time slot of Tuesdays at 10p for the remainder of its sophomore season. For now, NBC has not set a return date for LOLA and the network will continue with its frosh drama Harry’s Law without interruption. Regis Philbin, long-time host of the daytime talk show, LIVE! with Regis and Kelly said on-air Tuesday he will soon retire saying this will be his last year on the show. Philbin has been with LIVE in its several versions for 28 years. Showtime set the third season premiere of Nurse Jackie for March 28 at 10p followed by the third season bow of United States of Tara at 1030p. Showtime additionally scheduled the epic series debut of The Borgias starring Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia with a two-hour episode on April 3 at 9p. The Borgias will air in its regular time slot of 10p Sundays starting April 10. Animal Planet brings back a second season of Fatal Attractions with a sneak preview airing on February 13 at 10p followed by weekly episodes beginning February 18 at 9p. The series, with five all-new episodes, depicts true stories of people who own deadly pets such as tigers, crocodiles and more. Fatal Attractions is produced by Oxford Scientific Films for Animal Planet. HISTORY launches a second season of its competition series Top Shot on February 8 at 10p. Throughout 13 weeks, the new season will follow sixteen marksmen who strive for the $100,000 prize package and title of “Top Shot.” Colby Donaldson continues as host of the series produced by Pilgrim Films & Television. A&E Network changed its series premiere of Breakout Kings to March 6 at 10p. The action drama about the unconventional partnership between US Marshals and a group on convicts tracking down fugitives on the run is produced by Fox 21. Investigation Discovery (ID) premieres the six-episode series, Stalked: Someone’s Watching next Monday at 1030p. In recognition of January being National Stalking Awareness Month, ID serves up a series containing real stories and protection advice offered by Dr. Michelle Ward, a criminal psychologist and former stalking victim. The series is produced by Atlas Media Corporation. DIY Network premieres a slew of new series during first and second quarter:
CNN posted nearly 2.1 Million total viewers for the premiere of Piers Morgan Tonight on Monday at 9p as well as 521,000 among A25-54. MTV’s series debut of Skins on Monday at 10p attracted 3.26 million total viewers and 2.7 million for its core demo of P12-34. The opening episode also delivered a 3.4 rating among P12-34. Syfy premiered new original drama series Being Human on Monday at 9p by delivering close to 2.0 million total viewers and 1.0 among A18-49 and 984,000 with A25-54. Combining totals from encore airings at 1002p and 1102p, Being Human amassed an unduplicated audience of 3.8 million total viewers for the night. Last Friday, Discovery Channel bowed new series Flying Wild Alaska at 9p which tallied 2.58 million total viewers and posted a 1.13 A25-54 rating. Every time I come to Los Angeles, I stay in a different place. One of these trips out here, I will find the perfect boutique hotel. It’s not that I require so much, just a few things– not too expensive, well located (Beverly Hills, Santa Monica or West Hollywood), a clean room with decent lighting and desk, and a blow dryer that heats up. A little charm would also be nice, as would some sort of view, and maybe a nice lounge/restaurant suitable for meetings. The last time I was out here, hotel employees kept walking into my room unannounced (that’s a problem for me), my room door wouldn’t stay shut (a bigger problem) and there were bugs. Deal breaker. So this time, I’m staying at the Hotel Angeleno – “A Joie de Vivre Hotel”, located in the shadow of the Getty Center and the cost is right in my wheelhouse. Staff upon arrival were nice enough, room clean and I had my choice of views — “city view” (which is really the entrance ramp to the 405) or the parking lot. Room service – not to shabby. If this works out, maybe I’ll stay here again.
