Starz is embarking on the pre-production of a six-part untitled prequel for its original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Production on the prequel series begins this summer in New Zealand and the episodes will premiere on Starz in January. Andy Whitfield who plays Spartacus will appear minimally in the prequel series as he is still undergoing treatment for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Production on the second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand was postponed this spring due to Whitfield’s treatment schedule. His doctors say the actor is doing well with his treatments. The prequel series will star John Hannah as Batiatus, owner of the Ludus and Lucy Lawless as his wife, Lucretia. The prequel’s plot depicts the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus takes center stage and arrives as a captured Thracian slave. Other returning characters for the prequel include Peter Mensah as Doctore; Manu Bennett as Crixus; Antonio Te Maioha and Barca; Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur; Lesley-Ann Brandt as Naevia among others.
