~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

CBS Television Distribution (CTD) sold the new first-run syndicated strip show Excused to stations representing more than 50% of the US for a fall 2011 launch.  The half-hour dating show was picked up in the top three markets on Fox-owned WWOR/New York, CBS’ O&O KCAL/Los Angeles and on Weigel’s WCIU/Chicago.  Station groups clearing the strip include Fox Television Stations, CBS Television Stations, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Weigel Broadcasting, Sunbeam Television Corp., Local TV Holdings, Cox Enterprises, Meredith Corp., Tribune Broadcasting, Post-Newsweek Stations, New Age Media, Titan Broadcast, Griffin Communications and Sun Broadcasting.  Excused was sold under the terms of cash plus barter into the majority of late fringe and access time slots.  Iliza Shlesinger hosts Excused produced by Renegade 83 Entertainment.

ESPN forged a 20-year agreement with The University of Texas and IMG College to create, launch and operate a 24/7 network concentrating solely on UT.  The new network is slated to launch in September 2011 with a variety of programming showcasing more than 200 exclusive events including various sports, original series and studio shows, historical programs and those based on academic and cultural topics.  The network will also sport an online broadband companion with further content offerings that may not be seen on the linear network.

Connection III Entertainment Corp. sold its newest E/I series Live Life & Win! to the Fox, Newport and Sinclair station groups for the 2011-2012 season.  Recently, the weekly, half-hour series was picked up by CW Plus.  Live Life & Win! is now cleared in more than 70% of the US including FOX stations in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.; on Newport stations in San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Cincinnati; and Sinclair stations in St. Louis, Nashville and Las Vegas.  Connection III Entertainment will produce 22 episodes of the series for the next season.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

USA Network approved two original scripted series for its programming slate, granting each a 90-minute premiere along with 11 one-hour episodes:

  • A Legal Mind is about a top Manhattan corporate lawyer (Gabriel Macht) charged with recruiting a new associate who turns out to be a brilliant but unmotivated college dropout (Patrick J. Adams). From Universal Cable Productions.
  • Necessary Roughness centers on a tough and beautiful Long Island divorcee (Callie Thorne) who nabs a job as a therapist for a professional football team.  Underestimated at first, she succeeds and become a sought-after therapist to other high-profile celebrities, athletes and politicians.  Based on a true story, this series is a co-production of Sony Pictures Television and Universal Cable Productions.

E! made a multi-year first-look development pact with Virgin Produced, the new production unit of Virgin Group.  The deal allows E! exclusive rights to all Virgin Produced reality series projects.
