Yesterday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt responded to Sharon Osbourne and her claims that her son, Jack Osbourne was let go from NBC’s upcoming new reality series, Stars Earn Stripes after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Reportedly, Sharon Osbourne was angry at NBC’s supposed decision which prompted her to leave her position as judge on America’s Got Talent.
- “First, we have the deepest affection for Sharon Osbourne and consider her to be part of the NBC family,” Greenblatt said in a statement. “And our hearts go out to her, Ozzy, Jack and his family at this time. We hold medical information in strict confidence and therefore cannot comment specifically about Jack, but as a company that cares deeply about the health and safety of everyone on our shows – especially one like Stars Earn Stripes that requires dangerous water stunts, strenuous physical activity, and uses live ammunition – we required all potential participants to undergo medical vetting to ensure that they could safely participate. Although we did not ask Jack to participate in the competition, we were able to offer him two substantial alternative roles on the show, both of which he declined. This network does not discriminate on any basis.”

Prolific composer Marvin Hamlisch, 68, died suddenly on Monday in Los Angeles following a brief illness. Mr. Hamlisch’s death comes at a time when he was busy working on several projects including a new musical, Gotta Dance and writing the score for Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic for HBO titled Behind the Candelabra among other projects. Mr. Hamlisch is best known though for writing movie scores including The Way We Were and Broadway musicals such as the huge hit A Chorus Line. Throughout his career, he won all four of the major awards, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy as well as a Pulitzer Prize. He matches Richard Rodgers as the only other person to have won all five awards. Mr. Hamlisch’s film scores total 40 including those for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People and Take the Money and Run. Incidentally, Mr. Hamlisch experienced a bountiful night in 1974 when he won 3 Oscars, for his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, his original score for The Way We Were and for the song The Way We Were. He received eight other Oscar nominations during his career. Mr. Hamlisch also won four Emmy Awards, two of which for his work on the Barbra Streisand HBO special, Barbra: The Concert. In pop culture, Mr. Hamlisch is also remembered as being mentioned in Gilda Radner’s Saturday Night Live “Nerd” sketches on NBC. Ms. Radner, playing Lisa Loopner was ga-ga over Mr. Hamlisch and his thick, nerd-like glasses. In addition to his composing career, Mr. Hamlisch was the principal pops conductor for symphony orchestras in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Dallas, Pasadena, Seattle as well as San Diego at the time of his death. He was also due to lead the New York Philharmonic during its upcoming New Year’s Eve concert. Mr. Hamlisch is survived by his wife of 25 years, Terre.

Ms. Hanes worked with her husband Ken Hanes to be co-executive producer on five episodes and was writer on one of ABC Family’s gymnastics-themed series Make It or Break It. She also co-developed and executive produced the 1999-2000 series Hope Island for Pax TV and was the writer-producer on the 2001 WB network series Dead Last. Ms. Hanes and her husband also wrote and served as executive producers on Eden, a 2011 drama pilot for USA Network. Ms. Hanes is survived by her husband of 22 years, Ken; her parents; two sisters and one brother. The family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Women’s Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
