~ MORE STUFF ~

Yesterday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt responded to Sharon Osbourne and her claims that her son, Jack Osbourne was let go from NBC’s upcoming new reality series, Stars Earn Stripes after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  Reportedly, Sharon Osbourne was angry at NBC’s supposed decision which prompted her to leave her position as judge on America’s Got Talent.

“First, we have the deepest affection for Sharon Osbourne and consider her to be part of the NBC family,” Greenblatt said in a statement. “And our hearts go out to her, Ozzy, Jack and his family at this time. We hold medical information in strict confidence and therefore cannot comment specifically about Jack, but as a company that cares deeply about the health and safety of everyone on our shows – especially one like Stars Earn Stripes that requires dangerous water stunts, strenuous physical activity, and uses live ammunition – we required all potential participants to undergo medical vetting to ensure that they could safely participate. Although we did not ask Jack to participate in the competition, we were able to offer him two substantial alternative roles on the show, both of which he declined. This network does not discriminate on any basis.”

A new series on National Geographic Channel takes viewers inside the Las Vegas detention system when Hard Time debuts August 14 at 9p.  The series goes inside the Clark County Detention Center inhabited by repeat offenders, tough criminals and at times visitors to Sin City who get in trouble.  The new season of Hard Time begins with two “best of” episodes followed by 12 episodes about the Las Vegas detention center.  Part2 Pictures, LLC produces the series for National Geographic Channel.

truTV served up highlights for its fall 2012 schedule: new series Killer Karaoke hosted by Jackass star Steve-O is inspired partially by the Zodiak Media International television show Sing If You Can.  Killer Karaoke challenges contestants to sing a hit song while Steve-O puts them through hilarious and surprising physical tests.  Produced by Zodiak USA, Killer Karaoke premieres October 19 at 9p.  Returning to truTV’s lineup is a second season of South Beach Tow from executive producer Jennifer Lopez and her Nuyorican Productions and Bodega Pictures debuting on September 19 at 930p.  Operation Repo in season 10.1 opens September 19 at 10p and the network’s ongoing series Lizard Lick Towing airs on Mondays at 10p; Hardcore Pawn on Tuesdays at 9p; and Storage Hunters on Sundays at 10p.

US English-language lifestyle network, Mnet inspired by Asian pop culture, revealed premiere dates for four new original series this fall.  Angry Little Asian Girl, an animated series based on Lela Lee’s Angry Little Girls series of comic books, t-shirts, bags and other products will open October 26 and features special guest star Margaret Cho as Kim’s mother.  National talent show, Kollaboration premieres on October 18; YTF uniting seven YouTube talents bows on September 12; and Danny from LA, a culture news show hosted by K-pop personality Danny (1TYM) debuts September 13.

An 11th new season of That Metal Show is on tap at VH1 Classic starting this Saturday at 11p.  With hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine, the series dishes on everything heavy metal and hard rock and features musicians from Aerosmith, Heart, Cheap Trick, Iron Maiden and more.  That Metal Show is a production of VH1 Classic.

Later this month, a second season of I Married A Mobster bows on Investigation Discovery August 15 with double episodes at 10p and 1030p.  The series chronicles true stories of women married to mafia kings.  Kaufman Films produces the series for Investigation Discovery.

Nielsen introduced a new product designed for online/TV cross-platform advertisers.  The Nielsen Online Segments – TV Viewing links online and offline consumer behaviors and gives marketers the ability to connect with TV audiences online which helps align their TV and online ad campaigns.  This new product, according to Nielsen “serves the needs of those on both the buy- and sell-sides.”  Companies that have picked up this new service early include Microsoft Corp., Adap.TV, Specific Media, Undertone and Videology.

SpotGenie, Inc., a privately-held digital advertising delivery network based in Atlanta has rolled out the software, FASTcoder, designed to streamline how TV stations nationwide receive and play TV commercials.  Since each TV station has its own requirements for receiving TV commercials, SpotGenie’s FASTcoder automatically transcodes master files to the specific requirements for the station.  For more details on how FASTcoder works, please visit the Cynopsis Media website at www.cynopsis.com and look for the article from SpotGenie.

This week, FourthWall Media launched MassiveData, a new unit that combines television viewing data with data-mining technologies to produce audience analytics for television.  MassiveData will offer a variety of products and services to help its customers form better marketing and advertising strategies by targeting the specific audiences they want to reach.  The product works as FourthWall Media currently collects census-level second-by-second set-top box viewing data from millions of television viewers.

Prolific composer Marvin Hamlisch, 68, died suddenly on Monday in Los Angeles following a brief illness.  Mr. Hamlisch’s death comes at a time when he was busy working on several projects including a new musical, Gotta Dance and writing the score for Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic for HBO titled Behind the Candelabra among other projects.  Mr. Hamlisch is best known though for writing movie scores including The Way We Were and Broadway musicals such as the huge hit A Chorus Line.  Throughout his career, he won all four of the major awards, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy as well as a Pulitzer Prize.  He matches Richard Rodgers as the only other person to have won all five awards.  Mr. Hamlisch’s film scores total 40 including those for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People and Take the Money and Run.  Incidentally, Mr. Hamlisch experienced a bountiful night in 1974 when he won 3 Oscars, for his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, his original score for The Way We Were and for the song The Way We Were.  He received eight other Oscar nominations during his career.  Mr. Hamlisch also won four Emmy Awards, two of which for his work on the Barbra Streisand HBO special, Barbra: The Concert.  In pop culture, Mr. Hamlisch is also remembered as being mentioned in Gilda Radner’s Saturday Night Live “Nerd” sketches on NBC.  Ms. Radner, playing Lisa Loopner was ga-ga over Mr. Hamlisch and his thick, nerd-like glasses.  In addition to his composing career, Mr. Hamlisch was the principal pops conductor for symphony orchestras in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Dallas, Pasadena, Seattle as well as San Diego at the time of his death.  He was also due to lead the New York Philharmonic during its upcoming New Year’s Eve concert.  Mr. Hamlisch is survived by his wife of 25 years, Terre.

Television writer and producer, Mary Hanes, 59, died Tuesday at her home in Studio City.  Ms. Hanes worked with her husband Ken Hanes to be co-executive producer on five episodes and was writer on one of ABC Family’s gymnastics-themed series Make It or Break It.  She also co-developed and executive produced the 1999-2000 series Hope Island for Pax TV and was the writer-producer on the 2001 WB network series Dead Last.  Ms. Hanes and her husband also wrote and served as executive producers on Eden, a 2011 drama pilot for USA Network.  Ms. Hanes is survived by her husband of 22 years, Ken; her parents; two sisters and one brother.  The family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Women’s Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
