Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt’s offer on Monday to end the blackout and go back to the bargaining table if CBS let TWC offer its stations on an a la carte basis was called an “empty gesture” from CBS CEO Leslie Moonves. “I was surprised to get your letter yesterday, particularly since I hadn’t spoken to you in more than a week,” said Moonves in a letter to Britt on Tuesday. “Come to think of it, you haven’t reached out to me personally, as I have to you on more than one occasion, even once during this entire matter, so your communication was both unexpected and welcomed. The fact that you released it simultaneously to the media, however, dampened my enthusiasm somewhat.” From the sounds of it, the three million affected TWC customers might be in the dark for a while. UBS estimates the blackout is costing CBS about $400,000 a day in retransmission and ad revenue, but will have a minimal impact if the strike is resolved within two weeks. Analysts predict TWC will feel pressure to make a deal in time for the fall TV season and the start of the NFL’s regular season.
Tweets matter – at least 29% percent of the time, according to a new Nielsen study that found a correlation between tweets and ratings. “We saw a statistically significant causal influence indicating that a spike in TV ratings can increase the volume of tweets, and conversely, a spike in tweets can increase tune-in,” said Nielsen chief research officer Paul Donato. The study measured 221 primetime broadcasts using SocialGuide, which captures Twitter activity for TV shows. An increase in live TV ratings bumped up tweets in 48% of the shows sampled, while an increase in Twitter activity pushed up ratings in 29% of the episodes measured.
“Cord cutting is real,” warns analyst Craig Moffett in a report from Moffett Research that says viewers are cutting off pay TV at a faster pace, thanks to rising prices and the entrance into the market of inexpensive streaming services. “The numbers aren’t huge,” reported Moffett, “but they are statistically significant… the very fact that there have recently been more new households being minted each year than there have been new pay-TV households is proof positive.”
Hollywood labor unions have lined up on Viacom’s side in the company’s long-running copyright infringement battle with YouTube. SAG-AFTRA, the Director’s Guild of America, IATSE and others filed a 24-page brief on Friday supporting Viacom’s motion to replace the judge that ruled in favor on YouTube on April 18. “YouTube’s role in the rampant, systematic distribution of content in violation of the exclusive rights of copyright holders caused and continues to cause harm to the entertainment industries and the members of the Guilds and Unions working in those industries,” said the brief. “We urge the Court to consider the full ramifications of YouTube’s actions, and request that the Court reverse the lower court’s decision.”
ABC News took home two awards at the Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence National Media Awards on Saturday. World News with Diane Sawyer won for its reporting on George Zimmerman after the Trayvon Martin shooting on February 26, and Robin Roberts‘ Good Morning America report on the shortage of African American bone marrow donors was honored.
Syfy docuseries Heroes of Cosplay delves into the culture of cosplay competition, where participants wear costumes to represent a character from fiction. The series features cosplay legend Yaya Hahn, who tells Cynopsis, “There has never been a TV show about cosplay before. The series follows a variety of cosplayers as they make costumes and enter costume contests at comic book and anime conventions. Viewers will see all the stress, excitement, stakes and thrills.” Show debuts Tuesday, August 13 at 10:30p.
Valerie Harper, who revealed in March that she has a rare form of terminal brain cancer, is currently in Canada filming UP movie The Town That Came A-Courtin’ – good news for fans of the Rhoda star. “I am happily playing Charlotte,” Harper tells Cynopsis, “and having fun with a character who has a Southern accent – I used my friend Diane Ladd for reference. I also watched Mississippi Burning and Prom Night in Mississippi with Morgan Freeman.” The movie premieres in January 2014.
The Emmys might not be moving heaven and earth for host Neil Patrick Harris, but theyre shuffling awards for him. For the first time, the trophy for choreography will be handed out on the primetime show, instead of at the Creative Arts Emmys the week before. The presentation will top a dance number created by the nominated choreographers, built around Harris. “We wanted to look for another way to involve our host, our friend Mr. Harris,” said exec producer Ken Ehrlich. The reality competition will move to the Creative Arts show, with the winner getting his moment in the spotlight as a presenter at CBS’s Sunday, September 22 event.
ABC has announced its newest Bachelor: Juan Pablo Galavis. The show usually taps a finisher further up the list than sixth place to headline the next season, but with a telenovela-loving Spanish audience to tap, the net might be hoping the former professional soccer player from Venezuela could draw fresh eyes to the dating competition. It could also be the fact that People.com readers voted Galavis the best Bachelor candidate. “When you see the reaction when he walks in a room, it’s silly,” said host Chris Harrison. “We have never had anyone who had been seen so little [on the show] get a big response.”
NBC is distributing a half-hour preview of its fall TV lineup, hosted by Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) and the cast of his upcoming sitcom, Sean Saves the World, to air between August 24 and October 6 on NBCUniversal outlets and NBC broadcast affiliates and web sites. Sean Saves the World debuts Thursday, October 3 at 9p.
Netflix will run the entire first season at once when dramedy Derek premieres on the streaming platform. The Ricky Gervais series, which aired in the U.K. on Channel 4, makes its bow Stateside on Thursday, September 12.
Sara Haines is joining ABC News as a NY-based correspondent. “Her commitment to teamwork, joyful ability to connect with audiences and her boundless curiosity and energy will fit perfectly here at ABC News,” said president of ABC News Ben Sherwood. Haines had been a contributing correspondent at NBC.
Dish Network chairman Charlie Ergen doesn’t rule out the possibility of a merger with DirecTV, acknowledging in an earnings call, “There’s no question that putting Dish and DirecTV together makes a lot of sense.” The exec pointed out that Internet content providers have changed the landscape since the FCC blocked an agreement for Dish to buy DirecTV in 2002. “I think the marketplace is probably fairly attractive for consolidation in the video business,” he said. “That may happen in cable first, and that might force the satellite guys to look at different things.”
PBS CEO Paula Kerger dismissed the notion that the net’s ratings rise – 5% since last year – is due solely to the breakout success of upscale soap Downton Abbey. “Eight hours of programming isn’t going to change our ratings for the entire year,” Kerger said at the TCA. “Night to night, our numbers are up.” As for the possibility of producing original American dramas, she said PBS is “looking to put money into research and development” for just that. In the meantime, the fourth season of Downton premieres in the US on Sunday, January 5.
Law & Order vet Barry Schindel has been tapped to serve as exec producer and showrunner for CBS‘s midseason drama Intelligence; he replaces Rene Echevarria. Series premieres Monday, February 24 at 10p.
Starz has canceled period drama Magic City after two seasons, due to low ratings. Its most-watched eps attracted 500,000 total viewers.
Christian Broadcasting News anchor Lee Webb is leaving the net to join Ligonier Ministries as vp of broadcasting. “Lee Webb has brought grace and professionalism to every aspect of our news,” said CBN founder Pat Robertson. “He is a consummate professional.” New CBN lead anchor will be John Jessup.
As part of its education initiative, Telemundo is participating in a campaign to help students prepare for school in the fall, and prevent high school drop-outs. On-air public service announcements from net news reporter Vanessa Hauc will support the effort.

PBS drama The Bletchley Circle is returning for season two. The four-parter premieres in Spring 2014.
Sunrise Pictures and Entertainment One have struck a deal to co-finance and develop pilot scripts for cable. “The new venture supports eOne’s commitment to dramatic programming, like The Walking Dead and Haven,” said eOne Television ceo John Morayniss, “and we’re looking forward to expanding our portfolio with more compelling content for U.S. and global audience.”
Bravo Media has greenlit a pilot for Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, based on the series by Vicki Iovine. “The funny, frank and fabulous tone of Vicki’s books provide the perfect jumping off place for the show,” said Marti Noxon, who wrote the script and will produce with Universal Cable Productions.
Lauren Iungerich, creator of MTV‘s Awkward, has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to write and develop a comedy for the studio. Iungerich left MTV in May after finishing the third season of Awkward; MTV has picked up the series for a fourth season.
Producer Mark Canton inked a deal with Starz to produce and develop original programming for the cable net. Canton expressed his appreciation for the opportunity “to jump headfirst into the episodic television arena, with a mandate to bring exciting, powerful audience-pleasing programming to the network.”
Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl) has landed the lead in TV Land pilot Jennifer Falls. Show is about a former high-powered exec who has to move in with her mother.
U.K.’s ITV has ordered a reality show following 19-year-old Olympic diver Tom Daley that will feature “the traveling adventures of the diving sensation as he embarks on a whistle-stop backpacking trip.”
Irish music manager Louis Walsh is leaving the U.K. X Factor judging panel at the end of the show’s tenth season. He’d been with the show, which returns later this year, since its launch. Rejoining the singing competition is tart-tongued Sharon Osbourne, an original judge who served from 2004-2007.

A Bachelorette season that started off with a whimper picked up steam, with a final ceremony that delivered on the oft-promised “most dramatic ever” (would Brooks return after leaving Desiree heartbroken? Would she reject both remaining suitors? Or rebound in record time?). Still, the two-hour ep was a half point shy of last year’s, with a 2.6 rating A18-49; follow-up After the Rose tied CBS juggernaut Under the Dome in A18-49 at 10p, though Dome placed first in total viewers (and possibly suffered from the CBS blackout for over 3 million viewers).
