~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FX approved a half-hour comedy pilot titled Alabama, co-created by and starring Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (both creators and stars of Reno 911!). Alabama is set a thousand years in the future on the United Nations peacekeeping spaceship called The USS Alabama. The plot begins six years into the crew’s seven-year mission of fostering peace and enforcing treaties in their outer space territory. Production on the pilot, produced by FX Productions will take place in the Los Angeles area this September. Garant and Lennon will executive produce along with Peter Principato and Paul Young.

Actor Jeff Goldblum announced yesterday he is departing USA Network’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent series after starring on the drama two years, reports Variety. Goldblum’s option with the show and producers Wolf Films had expired and the actor made the decision to leave the show now citing the show’s instability together with a ratings decline during this last season. The ninth season finale of Law & Order: Criminal Intent aired July 6 and to date, USA has not said if it will continue the series for a tenth season. Goldblum joins other show alums who recently left the show including Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe and Eric Bogosian though Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Saffron Burrows were added. Goldblum contends he is leaving the show on amicable terms with the network and Dick Wolf’s Wolf Films.

Toronto-based Breakthrough Films & Television announced actress Kim Cattrall will reprise her voice role as “Dee” for the sophomore season of Producing Parker. The animated sitcom is a satire of a daytime TV show titled The Dee Show where during the first season the host, Dee lands the show in jail, goes to rehab while the show becomes #1 in the ratings. The show also features the celebrity voices of Jason Priestley, Catherine O’Hara and Mark McKinney. Production for the second season is underway and a January 2011 premiere is set for Canada’s TVtropolis. Producing Parker is co-produced by Breakthrough Films & Television and Philippine Animation Studio in association with Canwest Media.

Sara Rue (Less Than Perfect, Eastwick) signed as host for The CW’s midseason reality series Shedding for the Wedding. Rue will host the weight-loss reality show where 10 overweight couples live together and compete over three months for their dream wedding. In the elimination process, the couple losing the least amount each week will go home. A premiere date has not been announced by The CW.
