Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 4, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Lifetime has good news and bad news. The good news is the network has ordered 5 additional episodes of its drama series Missing for a total of 18 for the season. Thus far in its second season, the show has averaged 2.2 million viewers. The bad news is their drama series The Division will not be picked up for an additional season. It has been on the air for four years, and according to the network, they feel the storyline has simply run its course. Thus far this season, The Division has averaged 2.0 million viewers for original episodes.
A&E‘s newest reality show, Growing Up Gotti (GRB Entertainment), featuring the daughter of the late infamous crime boss John Gotti and her three teenage sons, debuted on Monday night with 3.2 million viewers in attendance, making it A&E’s most watched new series in the network’s history. That prompted the network to promptly order up seven more eps, in addition to the 13 already in the pipe. In key demos, Gotti avg’d 1.8 million viewers in the A18-49 range, and 2.0 million in the A25-54 demo.
Martha Stewart has a new show coming to broadcast television in January. In conjunction with PBS station WETA/Washington, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., will launch Everyday Food – the TV series spinoff of the MSO magazine by the same name. The 30m weekly series will feature a stable of five cooks, all offering quick, easy and practical kitchen solutions to making good things in the kitchen, using ordinary ingredients. Initially, 26 eps will be produced.
Season Finale Tonight: Simple Life 2 on Fox at 930p (preceded by the 2nd to last ep)
TNT‘s biopic of Evel Knievel drew a somewhat modest 1.7 million viewers for its Friday night premiere, tho the cumed average for the multiple plays over the weekend averaged approx 2.0 million.
Coming to PAX in September is a primetime weekly series called Faith Under Fire – a talk/debate show that focuses on controversial issues involving religion, spirituality and morality. The show will be headed by Lee Strobel, a former Chicago Tribune legal expert and author. Guests will come from a variety of backgrounds including religious, pop culture, current events, academia and the arts and sciences. Faith Under Fire debuts on September 25 at 10p.
Curtis Sliwa is no greenhorn in the world of television. In the early 1990’s he (and wife Lisa) was featured in an ABC Friday Night summer series with his own talk show, and has made numerous appearances on a variety of talk shows and news programs. As he comes into focus again in the news as the alleged target of incarcerated mobster Gotti, he is also in the midst of rebuilding the LA chapter of the Guardian Angels. The Angels have not been on the streets of LA since 1997. Now, as new members are recruited and trained, a potential reality series is also being developed. According to Variety, the Angels have cut a deal with Rollman Entertainment to follow the process of the Angels return to Los Angeles. As yet, no network attached.

The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1735: John Peter Zenger, publisher of the New York Weekly Journal, is acquitted of libel charges for publishing attacks on the British Crown and royal administration in New York. Royal Governor William Crosby had hoped that the charges would silence the paper. Instead, Alexander Hamilton’s successful defense of Zenger affirmed the principles of free speech and a free press.
