PBS kicks off a 38th season of Austin City Limits on October 6 (check local listings) with a full-hour performance of British band Radiohead. Other future episodes over the 13-week run feature Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt with Mavis Staples, The Shins and The Civil Wars among other artists and bands. The program is taped live before an audience from its new home at The Moody Theater in downtown Austin.
ABC’s daytime series The Chew is back for a second season starting September 10 at 1p. Katie Couric will be the featured guest to preview her new syndicated talk show, Katie. The Chew’s hosts Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly and Daphne Oz are all returning.
The third annual American Country Awards, airing from Las Vegas in December on FOX will have Trace Adkins and Kristin Chenoweth back as hosts. Nominations for the awards show will be announced soon.
In early October, Logo debuts a documentary series, WHAT!? Logo Documentaries. The series will examine worlds, people and experiences and begins October 2 at 10p with the world premiere of Loving Large. Other titles include the Logo premiere of Pedigree Dogs Exposed on October 9 at 10p; the US premiere of Pink Ribbons, Inc. on October 16 at 10p; the US premiere of Super Tiny Animals on October 23 at 10p; and the Logo premiere of The Most Hated Family in America on November 6 at 830p. In January, Outdoor Channel launches a new original series, Elite Tactical Unit: S.W.A.T. following real-life S.W.A.T. officers as they compete for cash prizes for themselves and cash and prizes for the S.W.A.T. departments they serve back home. The one-hour, 13-week action reality show is filming in St. Louis. The series is presented by Sig Sauer and produced by Winnercomm, an independent sports production company and division of Outdoor Channel Holdings.
During the inaugural week of new nationally syndicated talk show, Katie hosted by Katie Couric debuting September 10, guests will include Jessica Simpson and Sheryl Crow, who wrote and performed the theme song for Katie. Other future guests will include Barbara Streisand, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Susan Sarandon, Chelsea Handler and Sofia Vergara as well as 50 Shades of Grey author E L James among others. Katie is distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

Programming Notes: Discovery Channel and SCIENCE will both air programming this week and next that honor the passing of Neil Armstrong. This Friday, SCIENCE will air encores of the series, The Planets with eight one-hour episodes from 9a to 5p followed by an encore presentation of the series Moon Machines with six one-hour episodes from 5p to 11p. On Saturday, Discovery Channel will air the one-hour special When We Left Earth at 7p and the US premiere of One Giant Leap: A Neil Armstrong Tribute at 8p. SCIENCE will also premiere One Giant Leap: A Neil Armstrong Tribute at 10p on Saturday proceeded by an encore airing of the documentary In the Shadow of the Moon at 8p. Then on September 5, SCIENCE will air encores of the six-episode one-hour series When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions from 5p to 11p.
Showtime will roll out a new season of animated webisode series, Dexter Early Cuts: All in the Family online each week leading up to the seventh season of Dexter set for September 30 at 9p. The series is narrated by series star Michael C. Hall, written by Dexter producer Scott Reynolds and illustrated by comic book artist David Mack. The series offers an early look at the life of the serial killer with plots that predate the series. Dexter Early Cuts is also available via online affiliate portals and to Showtime subscribers on Showtime On Demand.
Results from the most recent Ericsson ConsumerLab annual study, presented in the TV & Video Consumer Trend Report 2012, shows that social TV in being integrated across the board. A few nuggets from the study reveals: 62% use social media while watching TV, an 18% increase in one year; 67% use tablets, smartphones or laptops for TV viewing; 60% use on-demand services each week; and 25% of consumers use social media to discuss what they are watching while they are watching a show. The study also says consumers are willing to pay more for an enhanced viewing experience as 41% of consumers would be willing to pay for TV and video content in hi-def.
New York-based Holsted Marketing, Inc., a multichannel direct marketing company and its subsidiaries announced yesterday they have filed a Chapter 11 case in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The company has plans to reorganize its operations in an effort to position itself for new growth and profitability in the near future.
ABC Television Network made a long-term affiliation agreement with WTVA/Columbus-Tupelo-West Point to broadcast the full ABC programming schedule via WTVA’s digital channel. The affiliation begins this Saturday.
Breakthrough Entertainment sold the six-part series David Rocco’s Amalfi Getaway to The Cooking Channel in the US and to National Geographic Channels International’s Nat Geo Adventure for international broadcast. The cooking series is co-produced by Breakthrough Entertainment and Rocco’s Rockhead Entertainment.
Relativity Media forged a deal where the company will distribute the wide theatrical releases for Arc Entertainment to domestic television outlets including pay TV, free TV and transactional distribution through the US. Arc Entertainment will begin this new partnership with the titles For Greater Glory and Nitro Circus 3D.
The 1980s film and series, Fame is being revived by reality TV producer Nigel Lythgoe for MGM TV. Fame is about the lives of talented students trying to become famous. Lythgoe will be the EP along with Kary McHoul, President of Nigel Lythgoe Productions, Charles Segars and Chad Gutstein.
Discovery en Espanol is launching production on a new series, Acceso Exclusivo: PUMAS gaining access into the training season of one of Mexico’s top professional soccer teams. The series is being produced under the network’s soccer programming concept, Futbol vDL (Futbol via the Discovery Lens). Acceso Exclusivo: PUMAS will premiere in fourth quarter 2012.
Comedian/actress Ali Wentworth is joining ABC’s Cougar Town as a love interest for Bob Clendenin’s character Tom.
Stacey Farber, best known for her role on teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation was cast in a recurring role on The CW’s midseason drama, Cult. Farber will play a tech-savvy girl, E.J. who works with centerpiece character Jeff (Matt Davis), journalist blogger who teams with a young production assistant (Jessica Lucas) who works on a popular TV show called Cult. E.J. will help Jeff in his search for his missing brother.
After 21 years of playing Jason Morgan on ABC’s General Hospital, Steve Burton is exiting the daytime soap. Burton’s last day on set is September 25. The actor contends he has “no complaints, no negative feelings at all. But it’s time to go.” General Hospital has not announced if they will recast the role of Jason Morgan.

At 8p, NASCAR and the NFL went head-to-head as ABC’s NASCAR Series at Bristol and CBS’ NFL Pre-Season game tied for #1 at 1.4/6 each followed by double Cops repeat episodes on FOX at an average of 0.8/3. CBS’ NFL Pre-Season game between Houston and New Orleans won at 9p with a 1.8/7 and ABC’s NASCAR coverage was second at 1.5/5. CBS again had the final win at 10p with more of the NFL Pre-Season match at 1.8/6 though ABC’s NASCAR race was a close #2 at 1.7/6.
