Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 28, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Washington DC is gearing up to make a bid to host the 2024 Summer Games as the latest US city to contend for the event. The Greater Washington Sports Alliance is leading the DC 2024 charge, telling reporters that the city is already a front-runner to win the bidding process and had received the support of Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Washington Wizards and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and the office of Mayor Vincent Gray with events that will span from Baltimore to Richmond. Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco are among the other cities expressing interest in the Games.
This year’s Little League World Series Championship game delivered a 2.5 rating for ABC, marking the highest rated game for the organization since 2007. Viewership rose 40% over 2012, according to Nielsen, with an average of 3,947,000 viewers.
Around the dial, NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra hit new highs for coverage of Monday afternoon’s Manchester United/Chelsea Premier League match, averaging 536,000 viewers. That’s good enough to rank second all-time among weekday, early season (prior to December) Premier League matches on U.S. television. The match also delivered NBCSN’s best weekday audience since the 2012 London Olympics. On the digital front, the contest generated 3,207,658 live minutes and averaged 51.8 minutes per visit.
Speaking of NBC, Carrie Underwood won’t be along when she makes her debut on Sunday Night Football, with NBC announcing that thirteen NFL players will join the artist for her performance of Waiting All Day for Sunday Night to open the games. Players include Larry Fitzgerald, Andrew Luck, Eli and Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers.
MLB Network lined up games for the first two weeks of September, announcing a Labor Day tripleheader and intra-divisional battles heading toward the end of the regular season. The Labor Day action on Monday, September 2 begins with the Cardinals/Reds at 1p, followed by the Rangers/Athletics at 4p and wrapping up with a key Rays/Angels game at 9p. Other featured matchups next month include Red Sox/Yankees at Spet. 5 at 7p and Sept. 13 at 7p as well as Pirates/Cardinals on Sept. 7 at 7p.
ESPN and NBA TV are gearing up for the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship and EuroBasket. NBA TV will carry the quarterfinals, semifinals and gold medal game of both the FIBA Americas and EuroBasket championships with the action starting Thursday, Sept. 5, at 5:20p. ESPN2 will also televise both title games, beginning with the FIBA Americas Championship Final on Thursday, September 12, at 8p, followed by the EuroBasket Final on Tuesday, September 24, at 2:30a. Meanwhile, ESPN3 will offer 130 games with 90 EuroBasket games and 40 FIBA Americas Championship games that will wrap up with the title games from each tournament.
With the kickoff of the 2013 NFL season just nine days away, NFL Network will wrap up preseason with a double-header of live Week 4 games tomorrow with Giants/Patriots at 7:30p and concluding at 10:30p with 49ers/Chargers. The channel’s 13-game 2013 Thursday Night Football schedule kicks off Thursday, September 12 at 8p when the Patriots host the Jets.
NBC Sports Group launches coverage of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs on Friday with four-round coverage of the Deutsche Bank Championship from TPC Boston. Programming continues with the BMW Championship (Sept. 12-15) and the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola (Sept. 19-22). Golf Channel will carry first- and second-round live coverage of each of the remaining FedExCup Playoff events, as well as weekend lead-in coverage prior to golf Channel on NBC’s coverage of the third and final rounds. Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller anchor NBC’s weekend coverage of the final three PGA TOUR events.
CNBC Prime takes a look at the world of sports handicapper Steve Stevens in a special preview of Money Talks on Tuesday, September 10 at 9p. In July, the network announced a series order for Money Talks, which is slated to begin airing in March.

Kurt Busch’s move to Stewart-Haas Racing will be sponsored by a familiar name. The team announced that the driver’s ride will be sponsored by team co-owner Gene Haas’ own Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in the western world. The deal begins with the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
The WWE is forming a team with The Creative Coalition to launch the first-ever Be a STAR grant program that will deliver $100,000 in grants. Four $25,000 grants will be awarded to qualified non-profit public charities that have programs focused on developing and implementing anti-bullying programs.
Digital & Technology
The NBA and Netshoes launched NBATienda.com, the first official NBA online store in Mexico featuring NBA merchandise that include the latest performance and lifestyle apparel and footwear by adidas as well as the likes of bags, backpacks, headwear, and Spalding basketballs.
Yahoo! has given an overhaul to Yahoo! Sports, revealing a redesign to “create a more consistent look and feel across all Yahoo! sites.” The new Yahoo! Sports will focus on sports news, more premium content from Yahoo! Sports experts, scores and fantasy games. In addition, Yahoo! Stream Ads will now appear across the sites that will look to complement the new content stream format.
Fresh off announcing the winner of the first ever Playboy Fantasy Baseball Championship, Playboy and StarStreet announced that the will once again team up for the NFL season to give players the opportunity to win a trip to the Playboy Mansion and compete for $250,000. The Playboy Fantasy Football Championship will be held at the Playboy Mansion on Sunday, December 15th, week 15 of the NFL season.
Robert Gottlieb was promoted to Executive Vice President, Marketing at FOX Sports where he will be responsible for all aspects of FOX Sports’ on-air, off-air and consumer marketing efforts including television, print, online, radio and outdoor creative for FOX Sports; FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2, as well as FOX Deportes and FOX Sports Digital assets. Gottlieb was named Senior Vice President and Head of Marketing last February and has since developed the marketing campaign for the launch of FOX Sports 1, among other projects.
Sports media company Flocasts made two key hires, announcing that David Weiss, formerly of ESPN and USA Today Sports, will serve as Senior Vice President of Multimedia Sales, and Phil Wendler, formerly of USA Today Sports, will be Vice President of Multimedia Sales. The duo will look to attract new brands and develop Flocasts’ reputation among brands. “With their past history of collaborating to grow brands in the high school sports space, they are the next piece in the puzzle in driving things forward for Flocasts,” said Martin Floreani, Co-Founder and CEO of the company.
