Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 22, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
CBS Sports revealed its broadcast pairings for the upcoming NFL season, which will begin on Sunday, Sept. 9 at noon with James Brown anchoring pre-game studio show, The NFL Today, along with analysts Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Cowher. Jason La Canfora joins the show this season as the NFL Insider, while Lesley Visser serves as reporter. Jim Nantz and Phil Simms once again take on the role as the lead team. Greg Gumbel calls games alongside Dan Dierdorf; while Ian Eagle teams with Dan Fouts; and Marv Albertpairs with Rich Gannonto call games. Other pairings include Kevin Harlan/Solomon Wilcots, Bill Macatee/Steve Tasker and Spero Dedes/Steve Beuerlein.
On the Air
CBS Sports Network is getting into the NFL game, launching new series NFL Monday QB. The series will be led by former QBs Phil Simms, Rich Gannon and Steve Beuerlein, who will break-down the week’s games from a quarterback perspective and discuss how quarterback play impacted the games, key plays, clutch drives, crucial decisions, star performances, winning and losing efforts and more. Other names set to visit the show during the season include Dan Marino, Dan Fouts and Boomer Esiason. Adam Schein hosts from the CBS Sports Network studio. The one-hour show debuts Monday, September 10at 5p. After Week 1, the series airs weekly through Super Bowl XLVII at 6:30p.
Former Giant and FOX NFL Sunday talent Michael Strahan is the apparently the name set to be announced as the new co-host of ”Live!” beside Kelly Ripa. Multiple reports state that Strahan is in negotiations to replace Regis Philbin, and ABC is expected to announce him as the new co-host in early September. Strahan is expected to keep his role on FOX NFL Sunday despite the new gig for the former player.
The Australian Rugby League Commission locked in the second-largest broadcast rights deal in Australian TV history, inking an agreement with Nine Network and Fox Sports in the country to pay around $961 million for broadcast rights in a new five-year contract.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are establishing a British outpost. The NFL and the team announced that the franchise will play one home game in London for the next four years beginning in 2013. The team will play at Wembley Stadium and replaces the Rams, who had been slated to play in 2013 and 14 but pulled out last week.
FUELTV is putting the spotlight on one country’s impact on the UFC with Brazil week on the network. The channel will begin programming on Monday, August 27 and wrap it up with an all-day marathon of The Ultimate Fighter Brazil on Sunday, September 2. Every day, the channel will host Brazilian-themed interstitials as well as classic UFC bouts with the country’s fighters such as Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos, and Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.
Sportsman Channel announced that it has given the greenlight for season two of series Dropped: Project X. The series features brothers Chris and Casey Keefer dropped in an unforgiving area and given 30 days to accomplish a mission. Season one features the pair dropped in a remote part of Alaska.
Television network AXS TV locked in a deal with The Score Fighting Series to serve as a broadcast partner for its MMA events. The Score Fighting Series is a live MMA promotion owned and run by Score Media, and the deal will see SFS bouts broadcast as part of AXS TV Fights’ programming, beginning October 19th when the series comes to the RBC Centre in Sarnia, Ontario.

Longtime Discovery Communications executive David Schaefer is leaving his position to take up a newly created role as Vice President of Communications at Golf Channel. Schaefer will now lead the network’s communications team, joining Dan Higgins and Jeremy Friedman. Schaefer had been with Discovery for the past 13 years, working in a variety of communications capacities across Discovery’s portfolio.
Outdoor Channel announced that Lorey Zlotnick will join the company as Senior Vice President of Marketing. Zlotnick will now develop, manage and implement all marketing and branding initiatives in support of network and multiplatform portfolio. Zlotnick previously served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and On-Air Promotion for FOX Sports Media Group’s FUEL TV.
UPS is utilizing its NASCAR ties and has launched a video series that focuses on innovations that revolutionized the sport. The series, dubbed Ideas that Changed NASCAR, features six videos that live on a custom microsite developed with Turner Digital and hosted on NASCAR.com as well as on UPS Racing’s Facebook page. Topics range from the evolution of the modern day pit crew and online racing simulation.
The NBA will launch the first-ever NBA 3X presented by Sprite in India. The interactive event is designed to combine basketball and entertainment to fans in four cities around the country from Sept. 15 to Oct. 21. The event will feature the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament ever staged in India with 400 teams expected to participate; as well as performances from musical artists or well-known DJ each day. The winners in each city will be flown to Mumbai to compete in a National Championship on Oct. 21.
Starkey Hearing Foundation will be visiting China as part of the organization’s partnership with NBA Cares in order to give more than 6,000 children and adults in need. This will mark the first time Starkey Hearing Foundation has conducted a mission in China. On August 26, Yao Ming, Caron Butler, and NBA China CEO David Shoemaker will join Starkey Hearing Foundation’s team of audiologists and staff in Chengdu.
Studio Licensing announced that Muhammad Ali Enterprises LLC had entered into an exclusive representation of rights for the famed boxer for consumer products in Canada. The company announced that a roster of categories for adults and kids will be introduced to the marketplace in 2013.
Turner Sports announced that the PGA Trade-In Network and eBay are launching The Pro Shops, a new consumer retail experience that allows golfers to buy equipment directly from PGA Professionals. The Pro Shops will serve as an online storefront both on PGA.com as well as eBay and offer players equipment and services available through the eBay marketplace that have been listed by PGA Professionals. The PGA Trade-In Network and PGA.com are managed by Turner Sports in partnership with the PGA of America.
ESPN and StubHub revealed that ten finalists for its Hall of Fans online promotion, and all ten will now campaign via social media platforms to become one of the three inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fans. The three fans with the most votes on Friday, August 31 will be during a September ceremony on ESPN’s Bristol, Conn-based campus. Finalists include fans from teams that range from the NFL’s Bills and Cowboys to the NBA’s Warriors and Clippers to the NCAA’s Crimson Tide and the NHL’s Canucks.
Amazon locked in a licensing deal with ESPN to add titles from the sports network’s 30 for 30 documentary series to its Prime Instant Video library. Content will be available for Prime subscribers to stream at no additional cost.
