Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 1, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
CBS reeled in a big piece of its media puzzle yesterday, announcing that the company had added ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb to its roster with a multi-platform deal across the company’s sports properties. On the upcoming CBS Sports Radio network, he will host an afternoon show at 3p when the platform launches on Jan. 2. On CBS Sports, Gottlieb will serve as studio and game analyst for CBS Sports’ coverage of regular-season college basketball as well as the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. On CBS Sports Network, Gottlieb is set to host a new show airing weekdays on CBS Sports Network beginning this fall and will be an analyst for regular-season college basketball.
Missy Franklin helped propel Monday night’s primetime Olympics coverage on NBC to rank as the most-watched first Monday in 36 years with 31.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen and outpacing Beijing by 1.4 million. Through the evening, the network is averaging 34.8 million viewers, the most of any Summer Olympics in history and drawing an 18.0/29 rating/share.
Around the dial, NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the London Olympics set viewership records over the weekend with the two most-watched days in the network’s history. Sunday’s average viewership of 1.204 million (spanning 4a-7:06p) scored as NBC Sports Network’s highest average viewership ever in the daypart. Saturday’s US/Columbia women’s soccer match averaged 2.478 million viewers for the network. Sunday’s US Men’s Basketball window averaged 2.648 million viewers for the channel.
Tivo’s top moments for Monday night was dominated by swimming for the evening according to their viewership data. Here’s the rankings:
1. Missy Franklin wins the women’s 100m backstroke gold medal
2. France’s Yannick Agnel upsets Ryan Lochte to take the men’s 200m freestyle gold medal
3. USA take gold and silver in the men’s 100m backstroke
4. 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte from Lithuania upsets USA’s Rebecca Soni in the women’s 100m breaststroke
5. Team USA’s John Orozco struggles on the pommel horse
Turner Sports lined up its coverage plans for the 94th PGA Championship set to run from Aug. 9-12. This year TNT will televise 18 hours of live coverage with six hours on both the Thursday and Friday starting a 1p as well as early programming on the weekend beginning at 11a. The network’s broadcast team will include host Ernie Johnson as well as analysts Ian Baker-Finch and Billy Kratzert and reporter Vince Cellini.
MLS and NBC Sports Group will team up to present a new day-in-the-life series dubbed MLS 36. The first episode will debut on Sunday at 9:30p on NBC Sports Network and feature MLS scoring-leader Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes as he prepares for the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game in Philadelphia. MLS 36 will follow the format and footsteps of three previous 36 series Fight Night 36, IndyCar 36 and NHL 36 which currently air on the channel.
NFL Network revealed more preseason plans for the upcoming season, which will include the Saints/Cardinals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 5 at 8p. The channel’s Thursday Night Football duo of Brad Nessler and Mike Mayock call the first game action of the 2012 NFL preseason. Stacey Dales provides reports from both sidelines. The NFL Total Access at the Hall of Fame Pre-Games how airs at 5p. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Aug. 4, the network begins seven hours of live coverage of the 48th Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement beginning at 4p. Rich Eisen anchors NFL Network’s Enshrinement Weekend broadcast team with presentations set for 7p.
CBS Sports Network is gearing up for the college football season with a series of four shows previewing the upcoming season. The Inside College Football Summer Special launched yesterday and continues throughout the week. Adam Zucker hosts and is joined by CBS Sports Network analysts Brian Jones, Randy Cross and Bruce Feldman.
Bellator Fighting Championships added another territory with an agreement with Russian broadcasting outlet Russia 2. Beginning September 28th, Bellator will be carried exclusively on Russia 2 throughout the country.
NESN reached an agreement with CBS 3 Springfield (WSHM) to will launch a content sharing partnership associated with NESN’s Red Sox and Bruins coverage. The partnership will include regularly scheduled live pre-game reports from Fenway Park and all NESN road telecasts to CBS 3 News at 6.

NFL Network revealed its campaign for the upcoming season, dubbed “It’s Serious Fun.” Developed by LA-based creative agency David&Goliath, the promotion will consist of national TV, print, radio, online, events and on-air spots and appear throughout the NFL season. Launch commercials highlighted Thursday Night Football and NFL.com Fantasy Football and “depict the NFL as a source of entertainment and camaraderie, a catalyst for more fun, more excitement, more competition and more time with friends.”
E-Poll revealed its top ten Summer Games Athletes based on its research for E-Score Celebrity and based on appeal percentage, Misty May-Treanor took the top spot in the rankings with a score of 79. Other names, in order, include Abby Wambach, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Novak Djokovic, Hope Solo, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps, Andy Roddick and Usain Bolt.

PGA.com is set to debut Social Caddy for the 94th PGA Championship next week, serving as a social destination for the PGA Championship including integration with Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.The platform will offer live action updates of the event with a “social leaderboard” capturing trending topics, top trending players and an aggregated stream of social media conversation associated with the event. The site will also launch Predict It, an interactive experience designed to give fans the chance to predict and vote on the outcome of situations that could happen on the course.
Twitter lifted its controversial suspension of Guy Adams, a correspondent for London’s Independent. Adams’ account was suspended on Sunday, after he tweeted the corporate email address of NBC’s Olympics President Gary Zenkel.
