Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/19/09
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Hacker extraordinaire Albert Gonzales, a true life Neo from the Matrix series without the good looks, was indicted in federal district court on Monday for carrying out credit card data theft from a record 130 million credit cards. Miami-based Gonzales, 28, and two Russian accomplices were able to penetrate the firewalls of 7-Eleven, Heartland Payment Systems and Hannaford Brothers to pilfer the data records over the course of two years, from Oct. 2006 to May 2008. The case puts the spotlight on the vulnerability of financial internet systems and is expected to test the limits of current cyber-related statutes. If convicted, Gonzales could spend up to 5 years in jail for conspiracy charges and a further 20 years for wire fraud.

Daisy’s new piece about digital collaboration brought to mind an excellent site that brings experts together with reporters looking for nothing more but the truth. HARO (which stands for Help a Reporter Out) is a simple online platform that acts as a matchmaker between journalists looking to connect with sources in the know and businessmen looking to get coverage or exposure for their product, company or cause. The brainchild of entrepreneur Peter Shankman, HARO works because it saves time and provides transparency; a reporter can type queries and search literally millions of media pitches, using the magic of keyword search to find a match. The site has grown like gangbusters in the past year, registering 30,000 working journalists (up from 1,500 a year ago,) and 80,000 sources (up from 20,000,) while attracting 3,000 monthly queries. Peter now sees HARO as a marketing and sales ecosystem and plans to expand the site to offer specific industry verticals.
