Syfy explores the world of mythological monsters in a new six-episode series, Beast Legends premiering September 9 at 10p following the fourth season opener of Destination Truth at 9p. In Beast Legends, a team of specialists investigate historical eyewitness accounts of these monsters to assemble in 3D CGI the most accurate picture possible of what these creatures looked like and how they might have behaved. The experts include Bristol, England-based Stephen Leonard, an adventurer and veterinary surgeon; Kathryn Denning, a myth expert, anthropologist, archaeologist and professor at Toronto’s York University; Scott Edwards, a Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Ornithology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University; and Francis Manapul, a Toronto-based comic book artist. The one-hour Beast Legends is produced by yap films in association with Canwest, Syfy and BBC Worldwide, with the participation of the Canada Media Fund and Rogers Cable Network Fund and through the assistance of the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.
Syfy additionally renewed its original dramedy Eureka for a fifth season produced by Universal Cable Productions. Eureka is currently in the midst of its fourth season and since its premiere on July 9, the series has averaged more than 3.0 million total viewers per week as well as 1.3 million A18-49 and 1.5 million A25-54 viewers. Eureka airs on Fridays at 9p.
ABC will reveal the list of celebrities participating in the new season of Dancing With the Stars at a special live event during Bachelor Pad on August 30 from 8 to 10p. DWTS’s co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke will announce the celebrity lineup for the fall season that kicks off on September 20 at 8p. ABC.com will host the full press conference the following day.
Showtime launched its highest rated original series premiere in eight years as The Big C debuted Monday at 1030p with 1.154 million total viewers. The Big C’s episode airing at 1130p delivered an added 429,000 total viewers making the night’s take for the new series at 1.583 million total viewers. Before that at 10p, Showtime opened a sixth season of Weeds with 1.262 million total viewers followed by 629,000 for the episode airing at 11p, making the total for Weeds at nearly 1.9 million total viewers.
New original series Hardcore Pawn debuted on truTV Monday at 10p, attracting nearly 2.0 million total viewers, 1.0 million A18-49 and 568,000 M18-49 viewers, establishing this premiere as the network’s biggest series debut episode ever. The second episode of Hardcore Pawn at 1030p tallied almost 1.8 million total viewers, 882,000 A18-49 and 550,000 M18-49 viewers.
Food Network served up an average of 4.6 million total viewers and 2.6 million and a 2.4 rating among A25-54 viewers for Sunday’s season six finale of The Next Food Network Star. Over the sixth season of the culinary competition series produced by CBS EYE too Productions, Food Network racked up 19.0 million A25-54 viewers as well as 36.0 million total viewers, making it the most-watched season in the series’ history. Directly after the final episode, Food Network debuted new series The Great Food Truck Race which averaged 2.0 million total viewers and 1.2 million and a 1.2 rating with A25-54 viewers. This series moves to its new time period of Sundays at 9p starting this weekend. Additionally, The Next Food Network Star winner of season six, Aarti Sequeira will launch her new daytime series Aarti Party on August 22 at 12p.
HISTORY’s series finale of Top Shot on Sunday at 10p, posted the highest audience levels ever for the series with 2.8 million total viewers, 1.6 million among A25-54 and 1.5 million A18-49 viewers.
TLC’s season four debut of LA Ink last Wednesday at 10p drew in 1.4 million A18-49; 1.2 million A25-54 and 778,000 W18-48 viewers. Then on Thursday last week, TLC premiered a seventh season of American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior at 9p, delivering 1.8 million A25-54 and 1.1 million M25-54 viewers.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX maintained the same ratings Saturday night matching the previous week at 1.2/5 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX and its double Cops episodes averaged a 1.2/5 in first place at 8p with UNIV’s Sabado Gigante next at 0.7/3. FOX clobbered the competition again during 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.3/5 followed by a tie for #2 between CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat and UNVI’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3 each. Then at 10p, CBS’ second 48 Hours Mystery encore did best with a 1.4/5 and UNIV’s Sabado Gigante played second fiddle for a third time at 0.9/3.

Former VP of Zodiak Television World and Head/Sales at Banijay International, Jan Salling will become Sales Director/COO at Nordic World in December this year to supervise a new format division. Established in 2005, Nordic World is a 50/50 joint venture between TV2 Norway and TV4 Sweden to develop new business opportunities in addition to a comprehensive export platform for all Nordic content. Since its inception, other broadcaster and producer partners have joined including NRK in Norway, MTV3 and YLE in Finland, TV2 in Denmark and about a dozen Scandinavian production firms. Based in Copenhagen, Jan will report to Espen Huseby, CEO in Oslo.
National Geographic Global Media (NGGM) President Tim Kelly announced Melina Gerosa Bellows, the present EVP/Children’s Publishing at National Geographic Kids and Family will expand her role to include Chief Creative Officer of the division. Melina will continue to serve as editor-in-chief of the National Geographic Kids and Little Kids magazines and will work in tandem across all NGGM divisions that produce kids and family-related products. Melina will further be involved with developing the broader business plans and strategies pertaining to this category. Melina continues to report to John Q. Griffin, National Geographic EVP/President of Publishing on all publishing areas and to Tim Kelly in her broader scope of duties.
Current TV hired three executives for a trio of newly-created positions within its ad sales team with all based at Current’s New York office, reporting to John Arianas, Head/East Coast Ad Sales:
- Ryan Forbell as Director/Advertising Sales joins from Turner Sports where he spent the last three years selling multi-platform sponsorships for the NBA, MLB, NASCAR and the PGA.
- Jessica Kleiner as AE/Advertising Sales previously worked for Viacom’s MTV Networks in sales at LOGO for the last five years.
- Kathryn McCarthy as AE/Advertising Sales joins from NBC Universal’s Bravo Network where she spent the last three years.
Canada’s Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI) named Keith Pelley as President for Rogers Media. Keith begins his new appointment as of September 7, 2010, succeeding Tony Viner who retired from the company this past May. Keith will have responsibility over Rogers Media assets including Rogers Broadcasting, Rogers Publishing, Rogers Digital Media, Rogers Sportsnet, the Shopping Channel, the Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre. In his upcoming role, Keith will report to Nadir Mohamed. Most recently, Keith was EVP/Strategic Planning at CTV and President of Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.
CNN renamed its Audience and Marketing Research unit to CNN Research and Analytics and also added several new employees. For its Television sector Jill Dowless joins as VP/Television Research to manage CNN and HLN television research groups. She will be based in Atlanta. Also Maureen Lynch as Director/CNN Research in charge of CNN TV research initiatives. For the Digital arena, Bruce Tyroler was added as VP/Digital Research and Analytics based in New York; Ann Harris as Director/Digital Analytics based in Atlanta; and Devora Olin as Research Analyst also located in Atlanta.
Tony Platt was elevated to Chief Creative Officer for the CRM and Custom Publishing practice at Meredith Integrated Marketing (MIM) within the Meredith Corporation. Tony will now manage the creative emanating from custom publishing, customer relationship management (CRM) and content development for all MIM clients. Tony has been with Meredith since July 2005 and will continue to be based at the company’s Los Angeles office, reporting to David Brown, SVP/GM, Meredith Integrated Marketing.
Kim Hatamiya was promoted to EVP/Marketing at Sony Pictures Television (SPT) where she will now manage marketing functions for the division worldwide. Kim’s duties will cover marketing on behalf of first-run and off-network syndication, primetime and daytime series, telefilms and family entertainment on broadcast and cable networks and support of advertiser sales. Kim will further supervise SPT brands as they enter the DVD marketplace and continue to oversee marketing efforts outside the US for SPT in addition to the company’s distribution efforts, international networks and international production. Kim reports to Steve Mosko, President, SPT.
AMC appointed Allison Hoffman effective immediately to the newly-created position as VP/Creative and Brand Strategy. Allison has been with AMC since 2005, joining as Director/Consumer Marketing and in her new position will report to Linda Schupack, SVP/Marketing. Furthermore, AMC upped Ben Davis as VP/Scripted Programming and Susan Goldberg to VP/Production. Ben will continue to assist with the original programming department’s development slate in addition to managing the creative for many of AMC’s current series in production. Susan will continue to manage all facets of physical production for the network’s scripted series and pilots. Ben is based in Los Angeles and continues to report to Susie Fitzgerald, SVP/Scripted Programming while Susan is based in New York and will soon report to the new SVP/Production and in the meantime is reporting to Joel Stillerman, SVP/Original Programming, Production and Digital Content.
