On Monday, TNT concluded its series The Closer after seven seasons with nearly 9.1 million total viewers in Live + Same Day, which becomes cable’s #1 telecast for the summer-to-date.  TNT followed up The Closer’s finale with the premiere of new drama, Major Crimes which attracted close to 7.2 million total viewers in Live + Same Day to become cable’s #1 new series launch for the year-to-date.  The Closer premiered in 2005, produced for TNT by The Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Bros. Television and headlined by Kyra Sedgwick.  Beginning next Monday, Major Crimes moves into The Closer’s 9p time period followed by all-new episodes of Perception at 10p.

Chef Roger Mooking journeys around the country looking for ways to cook with fire when Cooking Channel’s new series Man Fire food debuts September 18 at 10p.  Roger visits with pit masters, chefs and home cooks, all working with fire to create flavorful dishes.  Man Fire Food is produced by IW Productions LLC.

This Sunday, Destination America premieres a new series that exposes the deception found in Las Vegas in Cheating Vegas at 10p.  The series takes viewers behind the scenes at casinos to uncover real scandals and gaming crimes.  Cheating Vegas is produced by Destination America and LMNO Cable Group, Inc.

Spike TV spotlights more tattoo artists when a second season of its original series Ink Master returns October 9 at 10p with back-to-back one-hour episodes.  Sixteen tattoo artists from around the country battle it out for a $100,000 grand prize, an editorial feature in the tattoo industry magazine Inked and the title of “Ink Master.” Following its premiere episodes, Ink Master will continue on Tuesdays at 10p with the live season finale airing in December.  Ink Master is produced for Spike by Original Media.

A 10th episode of docu-series Beverly Hills Nannies was ordered by ABC Family.  The 10th episode will be a Nannies Tell All reunion episode hosted by Ross Matthews and will air immediately after the summer finale of the series on September 4 at 10p.  Beverly Hills Nannies is produced by Evolution Media.

VH1 approved a third season of La La’s Full Court Life starring actress La La Anthony as she launches a clothing line and goes to London to watch her husband, NBA star Carmelo Anthony play with the USA men’s Olympic basketball team.  Season three will premiere early next year. 

Later this month, a second season of Addicted is back on Discovery Fit & Health starting August 28 at 10p.  The one-hour docu-series focuses on nine people with uncontrollable addictions and the friends and family members who are hoping they find help.  Interventionist Kristina Wandzilak, also the Executive Director and Founder of Full Circle Intervention works with the addicted individuals.

Monday’s sneak preview of Counting Cars on HISTORY at 1030p tallied 4.3 million total viewers in addition to 2.1 million with A25-54 and 1.8 million among A18-49.  The series airs in its regular time slot of Tuesdays at 10p and is produced by Leftfield Pictures.

Ron Palillo, best known for playing Horshak, one of the Sweathogs on the 1970s sitcom, Welcome Back, Kotter died Monday night in Palm Beach, FL.  He was 63.  Starting in 1975, Mr. Palillo was one of the oddball students who plagued Mr. Kotter (Gabe Kaplan) for four seasons on the ABC comedy.  Mr. Palillo’s character was the nasally-voiced Arnold Dingfelder Horshack who was always the first to raise his hand in class with his “Ooo-ooo-oooooh!”  After Welcome Back, Kotter, Mr. Palillo guest-starred on a variety of shows including The A-Team, CHiPs and Murder, She Wrote and in 1996, played himself on several episodes of Ellen.  Also in 2002, Mr. Palillo agreed to appear and box Dustin Diamond for an episode of Celebrity Boxing billed as Horshack vs. Screech.  During recent years, he also showed up in various TV Land nostalgia specials. Perhaps his most rewarding role though was teaching drama at the G-STAR School of the Arts for Motion Pictures and Broadcasting, a charter high school in West Palm Beach.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

A+E Networks and Lionsgate formed a partnership allowing Lionsgate to handle the home entertainment distribution of programming from A&E Network, HISTORY and Lifetime.  Under this new deal, programming from A+E Networks’ catalogue includes Storage Wars, Shipping Wars and Duck Dynasty from A&E; Pawn Stars, American Pickers and America The Story of Us from HISTORY; and Lifetime’s Dance Moms.  The catalogue also features thousands of hours of programming such as the A&E miniseries Pride & Prejudice and acquired TV classics such as Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Kids in the Hall and Homicide: Life on the Street among other programming.

The multi-format 24/7 local, regional and national television weather service, WeatherNation TV, Inc. made an agreement with Son Broadcasting Network to offer its local weather news in Albuquerque for KCHF-TV’s digital tier.  Beginning this past Monday, WeatherNation is available in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Filmmaker, author and Grammy-winning producer, Emilio Estefan made an overall deal with 20th Television that will have him serve as creator and executive producer on a Latino-themed drama series.  The timeline for the project is to have it put into development at the studio this fall.  Estefan is credited for creating Miami Sound Machine which launched the career of his wife, Gloria Estefan and he also directed the careers of other top Latino performers including Shakira, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. 

Tommy Dewey was cast as a boyfriend to Mindy Kaling’s character on her new sitcom The Mindy Project.  Dewey will play Josh Daniels, a successful lawyer who goes after what he likes.  The Mindy Project premieres September 25 at 930p on FOX. 

GSN (formerly Game Show Network) revealed its celebrity guest lineup for The Pyramid when the daily strip show debuts September 3 at 6p.  The Pyramid is a contemporary version of the classic game show and elements of the original show are being brought back from the Pyramid game board, the celebrities and the Winner’s Circle hosted by Mike Richards.  A cadre of celebrities appearing on The Pyramid this fall include: Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Kate Flannery (The Office), Samantha Harris (Host, Stars Earn Stripes), Dot Marie Jones (Glee), Wallace Langham (CSI), Joshua Malina (Scandal), Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Oscar Nunez (The Office), Jim O’Heir (Parks and Recreation), Melissa Peterman (Baby Daddy), Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement), Danny Pudi (Community), Jai Rodriguez (Malibu Country), Aida Turturro (The Sopranos), Nick Turturro (Blue Bloods) and Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy).  The Pyramid is produced by Embassy Row in association with Sony Pictures Television with Michael Davies and Maureen FitzPatrick serving as EPs.

The faux reality series, The Joe Schmo Show will make a comeback on Spike TV after being off the schedule for nine years.  Spike will premiere a new version in 2013 with 10 episodes titled Joe Schmo: The Full Bounty.  The premise will have a contestant believe he is on a new reality show looking for America’s next great bounty hunter.  His cast mates will include Lorenzo Lamas, playing himself.  Ralph Garman (Family Guy) is reprising his role as the show’s host.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  On the final weekend of the Summer Olympics, NBC queued up first Saturday with a 6.2/21 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  Since no Summer Olympics ratings were recorded during 8p, FOX topped with double Cops rerun episodes at an average of 0.8/3 followed by Telemundo with a combination of Cine Millonario and Summer Olympics coverage at an average of 0.5/2. Then at 9p, NBC was out in front with Summer Olympics coverage at 5.1/18 and ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney presentation was next at 0.7/2.  NBC posted its best ratings of the night at 10p with the Summer Olympics at 6.8/23 while CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery encore and Univision’s Sabado Gigante tied for #2 at 0.6/2 each.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC won its final gold Sunday as the Summer Olympics closed and delivered a 7.9/22, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 7p, NBC was first with a re-cap of America’s London Gold at 5.0/17 and CBS’ 60 Minutes rebroadcast followed at 1.1/4.  #1 honors went to NBC at 8p with London Gold and the Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony at an average of 8.1/23 and CBS’ Big Brother was next at 2.0/6.  At 9p, NBC had its best ratings of the night with the Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony at 9.6/24 and next in line was FOX with a Family Guy rerun and an American Dad repeat tying for #2 at an average of 1.7/5.  NBC was still riding high during 10p with more of the Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony at 8.9/23 and ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition was #2 at 1.0/3.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX delivered a “heavenly” win Monday with a 2.3/7 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX’s debut of Hotel Hell won the 8p hour at 1.9/6 while NBC’s new competition series Stars Earn Stripes was next at 1.7/5.  FOX continued to sizzle in first place during 9p with Hell’s Kitchen at 2.7/7 and the second half of NBC’s new Stars Earn Stripes followed at 1.8/5.  At 10p, the season premiere of Grimm on NBC won at 2.0/5 and the premiere of new telenovela, Amor Bravio earned Univision a second place showing at 1.4/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Emmy Award-winner Lily Tomlin was elected as a Governor of the Television Academy’s Performers Peer Group where she will serve out the term of Performer Peer Group Governor Kathryn Joosten who passed away in June.  The term will end in December 2012.  Furthermore, Jonathan Murray and David McKillop were elected as the inaugural Governors for the newly-established Reality Programming Peer Group.  Jonathan’s term will end in December 2013 while David’s term will end in December 2012.

Oxygen Media tapped Harleen Kahlon to become SVP/Digital.  Harleen will additionally be a part of the network’s senior leadership team and is responsible in her new role with creating strategic digital launch plans for new and returning series.  Based in New York, Harleen will report to Jason Klarman, President, Oxygen Media.

Sundance Channel bolsters its marketing department by hiring two industry creatives.  Raymond Dooley joins as VP/Consumer Marketing and Evan Fleischer was appointed as VP/Integrated Marketing and Branded Entertainment.  Raymond is charged with driving strategy and creative direction for all advertising and promotional campaigns to build awareness, promote tune-in and spur ratings for the network’s original programming and films in addition to managing the social media strategy.  Evan will spearhead the network’s brand position, strategic development and have responsibility over revenue-generating integrated marketing campaigns.  Both Raymond and Evan are based in New York and report to Monica Bloom, SVP/Marketing.

Effective immediately, G4 ramps up its development production of programming by adding former SVP/Development at True Entertainment, Matt Hanna as Head/Original Programming.  Matt will oversee the network’s development and programming production that is targeted to men while reporting to G4 Media General Manager Adam Stotsky.

Eric Land was named President/GM at WTLV/WJXX in Jacksonville, FL, owned by Gannett’s Broadcasting Division.
