In the wake of brisk sales of tweet-related sponsorship opportunities for MTV‘s 2013 Music Video Awards, Viacom and Twitter are partnering for Twitter Amplify campaigns for dozens of other shows and events through 2014. Twitter Amplify lets nets deliver sponsor-supported content via Twitter before and during events. “The availability of Twitter Amplify in the MTV Music Video Awards an annual trending-topic behemoth – generated such a great response from advertisers that we’re accelerating our plans to roll it out across our networks,” Viacom Music head of Sales, Music and Entertainment Jeff Lucas. VMA’s air live Sunday, August 25 at 9p; sponsor-supported content for the event will include red carpet and backstage moments, and MTV News reports.
News channel Al Jazeera America keeps staffing up in advance of its Tuesday, August 20 launch. Latest to hop onboard are former NBC correspondent Michael Okwu and CNN‘s Sarah Hoye as correspondents for daily primetime magazine America Tonight.
What’s good for the goose… Republican data company Deep Roots Analytics is turning to FourthWall Media to help target political campaign advertising, using the same type of data FourthWall provided to the Democratic Party in President Obama’s re-election campaign. “It’s not a conflict,” Dan Levinson, FourthWall’s senior vp of communications, tells Cynopsis. “FourthWall anticipates working with Democratic organizations going forward.”
There appear to be no hard feelings as Jay Leno makes way for a new host Jimmy Fallon, who starts his NBC Tonight Show gig after the Olympics in February (well, except for Leno’s self-deprecating on-air digs about being replaced). But after the ratings and public relations debacle four years ago that accompanied Conan O’Brien taking Leno’s place for nine months, and with Leno winning in the ratings war night after night, not everyone’s keeping their opinion to themselves. In her blog Monday, Fox News host Greta Van Susteren suggested that her bosses at Fox sign up Leno. “In NBC’s ‘great wisdom,'” she wrote, “they are upsetting the apple cart and forcing him to go. They have a known winner and are ‘rolling the dice.'” Leno’s final Tonight Show airs Thursday, February 6.
Original cast member Sandra Oh is leaving Grey’s Anatomy at the close of its upcoming tenth season. The actress had signed a two-year deal in 2012, but has decided to leave early. “Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” Oh told the Hollywood Reporter of her character, Dr. Cristina Yang. “We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey’s writers to think of why she’s going to go.” Showrunner Shonda Rimes told THR, “I would hope it wouldn’t be happening, but I also know Sandra, and I know that it’s time for her to have new challenges.”
Subscribers of Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold will be able to access current series episodes of MTV series like Teen Wolf and Catfish, as well as past seasons and shows on the net. To access the content viewers will have to have service from a pay-TV partner, which include Verizon FiOS, Time Warner Cable and other biggies, but not Comcast or Dish Network.
O no! Susan Kasi‘s lawsuit against Discovery Communications is inching forward after a Florida judge denied Discovery’s motion to dismiss. Kasi claims she developed an idea in 2003 for a network that offered therapeutic, inspiring programming, and though Discovery passed, points to likenesses between her concept and the Oprah Winfrey Network, which is jointly operated by Discovery and Harpo Productions. The case is still in early stages.
Some Breaking Bad fans are fuming that their iTunes pass for season five, the series’ final, does not include the last eight episodes, airing now. Packaged as “The Final Season,” those eps require an additional outlay of $22.99 for HD.
Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley will once again host the CMA Awards (it’ll be their sixth go-round). Trophies will be handed out live Wednesday, November 6 from Nashville.
TNT six-part period drama Mob City premieres Wednesday, December 4 at 10p. The series, set in post-World War II LA, stars Neal McDonough, Ed Burns and Jeremy Luke.
NBC Sports Network eases into its new look on Saturday, as it changes its name to NBCSN. The logo will read NBC Sports Network, then dissolve into the NBCSN logo. The full rebrand is planned for the net’s coverage of the winter Olympics in Sochi.
Following Monday night’s sneak peek at Veria Living‘s The Lisa Oz Show, the net is offering a second look at a full episode today, Wednesday, at http://www.veria.com/video/the-lisa-oz-show-full-episode-sneak-peek. Viewers can also get a preview viewing of new beauty show Naturally Beautiful at http://www.veria.com/video/naturally-beautiful-full-episode-sneak-peek.
Syfy has acquired two seasons of New Zealand dramedy The Almighty Johnsons from All3Media International. Senior vp of programming Chris Regina calls the quirky series “a compelling blend of fantasy and comedy.” Season one’s first ten episodes will premiere in 2014.
NeNe Leakes is back as Coach Roz to torment Sue Sylvester on Glee‘s season five. When last seen, Roz had stolen the Cheerios squad from Sue. Series premiere is Thursday, September 26 at 8p. Leakes also stars in Bravo‘s I Dream of NeNe, returning Tuesday, September 17 at 9p, and is taping season six of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
The parade of brides-to-be continues when TLC‘s Say Yes to the Dress returns for season ten. “I never thought the show would last this long!” SYTTD star Randy Fenoli tells Cynopsis. So how much longer can the show last? “As long as there are brides who need help finding their perfect dress while dealing with crazy entourages,” promises Fenoli, “we’ll be around to help.”
VH1‘s Rock Docs returns with Sound City, about the studio where classic albums by the likes of Neil Young and Stevie Nicks were recorded. Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl directed the doc, airing Saturday, August 17 at 10p on VH1 and VH1 Classic. Also on its way is part two of Pearl Jam 20 from Cameron Crowe, with never-before-seen footage of the rock band. Premieres Saturday, October 12.
Lifetime has renewed its fastest-growing drama, Devious Maids, for a second season. The net credits the series with making it cable’s top show on Sunday at 10p among women; its 18% Hispanic demo is almost double Lifetime’s primetime average.
Production started Monday in Vancouver for Hallmark‘s Hats Off to Christmas! The two-hour holiday movie stars Haylie Duff (7th Heaven) as Mia, a small town store manager/single mom.
This could get the demos down: Tween idol Nick Jonas is making a guest appearance on CBS procedural Hawaii Five-0, playing a computer hacker. “Nothing makes this show more fun than incorporating well-known, talented actors as guest stars on our show,” said EP Peter Lenkov. Fourth season premiere is Friday, September 27 at 9p.
Chris Diamantopolous (The Office) and Jake Sandvig (Easy A) will star in Syfy pilot High Moon. The drama is based on The Lotus Caves, a novel by John Christopher.
Did someone have a little too much fun in Thailand? Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun claims the production crew for BBC‘s Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents, in which worried parents tail their vacationing kids, wasted U.K. taxpayers’ money (to the tune of $232,000) by partying for ten days in Phuket after a participant left the show left and an episode had to be scrapped. The BBC said there’s “no truth” to the accusation. “Production schedules were amended due to a change of contributors,” said the BBC and producer RFD in a joint statement, “but the production team continued to work and film other material for the series.”
Cable cutting’s becoming a habit in Canada, too, claims a report that says like the U.S., our neighbors to the north have been dropping TV subscriptions for the last three fiscal quarters. Boon Dog Professional Services reports that Canadian carriers lost 5,394 subscribers in the first quarter of 2013. With the entire market at 11.8 million households, it’s a drop in the bucket – but it’s still making a splash.
Crime really can pay. Fox International Channels has launched procedural-heavy Foxcrime in Africa, over South Africa’s DStv network. Series include Criminal Minds, CSI and Blue Bloods.
Europe’s RTL Group and CBS Studios International are partnering for two new channels for the South East Asian markets. Broadcast in English and local languages, the channels will include programming from RTL like The X Factor and America’s Got Talent, as well as CBS’s Elementary and Under the Dome.
Born and raised in England, Top Chef exec producer Dan Cutforth started in TV at the BBC. After hopping the pond, he and partner Jane Lipsitz formed Magical Elves, which produces movies (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) as well as TV shows. No stranger to Emmy, this year Cutworth nabbed Top Chef noms for Outstanding Reality Competition Program (a trophy he took home in 2010), as well as Outstanding Special Class Short Form Nonfiction Program for Bravo.com‘s Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen.
How did you celebrate your nomination?
I was in England visiting my family. My dad and I had a drink to celebrate, and back in LA at the office lunch was sent over by Bravo – tacos and shots were enjoyed by all!
Were you surprised?
This is the 9th consecutive year we’ve been nominated in this category, so it wasn’t like a bolt from the blue. However, every year my pessimistic side kicks in, so it always feels like a beautiful surprise to get the nomination.
What might another Emmy mean for Top Chef?
It’s hard to say what it would mean for the show, but it would definitely mean a lot to us. When we won, my partner Jane was stuck in New York and couldn’t be there. It’s a pretty amazing experience to stand on that stage and accept that award.
How did you get your start in television?
I answered an ad in The Guardian newspaper for a researcher job at the BBC. After four very intense interviews I got the job. I was so happy to be doing something creative, rather than working on my dad’s farm or temping at the bank in the nearest town, which is how I had been earning a living up to that point. It was my dream back then to have a production company and a record label. The record label thing never worked out, obviously, so I guess half my dream came true.
